The question I can't help but ask is what is this world coming to? First the Intel switch, now a multibutton mouse, what is next for Apple?

Hmm..interesting that they're not (yet) offering it as an upgrade option when you order a desktop.

Except the Mac Mini--it's listed there.

IF I hear one more person complain about "no bluetooth version" I'm gonna go nuclear.

Shut up. It's probably around the bend, you don't need to reiterate what 6 other pages worth of people have already said.

*sigh* I'll have to try it tonight when I go in. However, I find the lack of two physical buttons (right and left) to be annoying already. I'll probably just wait for the Razer Pro to come out.

Interesting that the Mighty Mouse is more compatible with Windows 2000/XP than with Panther. ^_^ Another "upgrade now!" incentive?

Well, no bragging to PC users that we have the better mouse since they can fully use it. ^_^ Apple is selling more and more wintel compatible hardware and software. Not a bad thing methinks.

System Requirements
Mac OS X (programmability requires Mac OS X v10.4.2 Tiger or later), or Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

or maybe not?:

This mouse scares me ...

Personally, I like physical click when I click a mouse, not the tap. I can tap my trackpad all I want, it isn't the same as clicking the button.

Of course Apple's solution is to add a minispeaker inside the mouse to simulate clicking sounds ... ok, that's kinda pushing it.

Now the scrollball ... not a bad idea. Only thing I'm worried about is the size of it ... doesn't it look rather small to you? Looks good, but I'm not so sure about the practicalness of it.

Finally the "force buttons" on the sides ... can't they just make then actual buttons? I don't get it ...

Well I'll have to try it out sometime. It's definitely an improvement over one button mice, but I like my third party mice better right now. Maybe release a bluetooth version and I'll reconsider.

*returns to using the trackpad on his laptop*

2. The 'scroll bar' on the top reminds me of the old IBM ThinkPad mouse things (you know, the little red dots in the middle of the keyboard). Those things were notorious for losing their nice-feeling finish within a year or so of use. I don't know if using one of those is the best way to go... but time will tell (perhaps Apple uses some newer, better material).

Those thinkpad knobs were weird and felt like someone jammed a pencil eraser into your keyboard. The mighty mouse ball is a true ball, apparently.

A scrollwheel gives you X, Mighty Mouse ball gives you X and Y.

I was under the impression that you still needed to physically click the mouse. (good thing) Left or Right is recorded depending on where you finger is in contact with the mouse when you click. Did I assume wrong? Can anybody confirm?

You! Yes you in the back! … Go to the Apple Store and check for us. Thanks.

You can place your finger on the touch sensitive area, then to click you just apply more pressure to the shell, just like a regular click click mouse.

Well why would they do this then?

Where were you MacRumors?

I knew of the impending release of the new iBook thanks to MacRumors.
I know of the impending release of 10.4.3.
I know of the impending release of the Motorola iTunes phone.

But where was MacRumors with the information on the immenent release of this mouse?!!!

The last post from MacRumors on a new Apple mouse was from March and it claimed it was a 2-button wireless mouse.

It's not much of a "rumor" when you tell us Apple has RELEASED something. Congratulations to Apple for keeping the cat (or mouse) in the bag.

Pleeasse.... i was just about to say how i can't wait to see how the one-button zealots will rationalize this one....

Not everyone who prefers a one-button mouse is a "zealot." I like multiple buttons just fine, but I find myself using the one-button more often than not. And this mouse can be either: one click in System Preferences.

Ditto for 360° scrolling: one click in Prefs if you want vertical only.

And the beauty of it? Each user can have different prefs. ONE mouse--and for some people it's one button with no scrolling, while for others it's 4 with 2-way scrolling!

It's Pretty Nifty

I didn't buy one, but a friend of mine did this morning. We got to the Apple Store as they were being delivered, and got the second one here in Jacksonville, FL. I like it. It feels familiar like the old one button mouse, but the functionality is much more like my current kensington 2 button scroller.

The trackball thing works very nicely. Side to side is weird because my fingers aren't trained to do that, but it should be very helpful in CAD drawings and such.

50 bucks seems a little steep for a mouse to me, but I'm a cheap skate (which is why I didn't buy one). May have to get one in the next couple of weeks, or after 10.4.3 comes out. Either way, it's nice that Apple finally made a 2+ button, and did it differently than anyone else. Pretty cool.

Bluetooth mice are way too heavy. Especially for any kind of gaming. If Apple can design a lightweight BT version of this 'lil guy, I'll be all over it.

m

They are only "heavy" the first few times you use them. After that you become accustomed to the weight and it will be second nature to you. Then other mice will feel really light. I went through that with my MX700, it felt really heavy for the first 2 days or so but after that every other mouse just felt light.

The only reason they're heavy is because of the battery ... how else can you go wireless?

Also better battery life = denser battery = more weight. It's a tradeoff.

So well said... I prefer Apple's mouse because I think it looks nice and it feels nice, and I do not consider myself a zealot. If I go into the store and the Mighty Mouse feels as nice, then I'd have to start seriously considering the edu pricing of $44. Hmm.

not ergonomic

it's not ergonomic; there are still better alternative people...especially b/c it doesn't have real scroll wheel or bluetooth. i'll pass on this one.

that said, i just bought an ms bluetooth mouse :D

This is far bigger news than Powerbook G5.

I almost agree with you.

Finally a sleek looking multi-button mouse from Apple. I hope that my ne Powermacs that have yet to ship will come with one without me having to purchase it. :D

Ergonomics anyone?

While it's cool that Apple finally has a multibutton mouse and the touch sensitvity is a nice features, I want to know when Apple will design a mouse that actually fits the shape of your hand. For those of us that work on a computer all day long, the mouse is the biggest ergonomic concern. Apple's mice have always been too small and regularly shaped (except the old boxy ones from way back when which were too big) to really fit comfortably in your hand. Logitech makes some really nice contoured mice that just feel great. Personally, I'm a trackball user myself. So when Apple comes out with a good trackball then I'll be excited. For now I'll stick to my Macally Q-Ball.

Looks like a really nice mouse, but I'll stick with my MX1000 which is wireless and has 50 billion buttons on it :D

50 Billion Huh? Does it have its own power source?

I have always thought that the mouse/mice from Apple fit really well in my hand. (Except for those ugly round ones that came with the old iMacs). Although I don't use a mouse all day long either.
