Just updated my ATV2 but problem with Computer section

Just updated my ATV2 and can't say I like it much, more of a refresh than a overhaul. Plus it's only the main intro screen thats changed, nothing else.

But has anyone else got the problem that all your 'TV Shows' under the users 'Computer' section is no-longer listed alphabetically, just one big mess of a list, not too impressed!!!

Isn't a single core A5 chip the same as an A4 chip? I thought all an A5 chip consisted of was 2 A4 chips on a single die so dual A4. Am I wrong here?

Thank you Apple for fixing the iTunes Match playlist folder problem on the ATV2!

I can now navigate among different playlist and playlist categories practically instantaneously now. Before, transitions took many minutes.

All these product and maintenance releases makes it seem like Christmas in March. Apple has knocked it out of the park!

I've been a frequent critic of Apple in the past. But for today, I'm an Apple fanboy :D

It never ceases to amaze me, people screaming for 1080p a year ago, and now you get, but it's still not enough. I for one say about time and am glad for it. Having 1200 movies built into my iTunes, look forward to taking all my ripped Blue-Ray and re-encoding them to 1080p and and enjoying the higher quality..

Select all my rips and tell it to re-encode and walk away.. will be done in a month, but will be awesome!

Kudos Apple! replacing 1 of my ATV2 in living room.....

As soon as this is jailbroken to allow streaming from my Synology NAS, I'll ditch my WD TV Live + and all the crappy-ass firmware updates from WD (that broke more features than they fixed with each new iteration) and be all over this.

Agreed, I hate this! Why do I need all those stupid new boxes, when I won't use half of them?

One other big problems that I have is with the stupid photo stream. There is no way to get rid of that box, and the photo stream also shows up in screen savers, etc. Really, the photo stream? The thing that archives every photo we take, whether we want to keep it or not?

Congratulations! You've now given our kids access to EVERY photo we've ever taken from our smartphone, which could make for some pretty "educational" experiences. And, who needs to see the 20 blurry copies of that shot we tried to get right? Who's bright idea was that? I hate baseball, which just reminds me that there's no friggin' NFL app. Why can't I delete some of these? Why can my kids access EVERY photo I've ever taken form my phone, including ones I've tried to delete? Really, who thought of this?

There is no way to customize or hide anything. I only use Netflix and podcasts. Everything else is bloatware to me. Sorry Apple, but you need to fix this.

So let me get this right, you have 1200 ripped 1080p movies from Blu-Ray backed-up, as well as 1200 720p movies stored with iTunes, thats like over 8TB (average of 2GB for 720p and 5GB for 1080p) of files, god you must be tripping over hard drives lol :D

LOL..

I have the 1200 movies ripped and stored on a Synolgy NAS (8TB) and Just got a Drobo that hold 20TB. Then several 2 and 3 TB Segate Externals that store all the Encoded Movies/TV Shows. The count is more like 400 Blue-Ray and the other 800 are DVD's. But when the system encodes it automatically creates a SD and HD version for compatibility for any device..

So overall I have about 36TB of drive space just for movies/tv shows.. With me keeping all my RIPs, now I can go back and re-encode for 1080p vs 720p..

I just read this straight from the Apple TV page:

I checked the page for Hugo and it reads 720p" (HD). I don't remember seeing them actually specifying resolution? Is this a new change in the iTunes store? I'm trying to scour the Movies section to see if any movie lists for 1080p.

Can anyone else confirm this?

Since the 1080p model doesn't street until the 16th, I'd imagine we'll be seeing them roll out the 1080p content over the next week.

It was reported late last year that Apple was asking for new 1080 files from Studios. This is a process that will obviously take some time...

Okay, I like the Icons if they are on my ATV2 but really, I am still waiting for the point of this thing. Just give me Hulu for God's sake!

Hulu's terms of agreement with the content providers may not allow it. Who knows.

----------

Thats the burning question in my mind as well.

Yes. Previously purchase movies can be re-downloaded on any device using iTunes in the could, same as music.

Apple doesn't want to ruin iTune TV episode sales. I know it's not a technical or licensing issue because HuluPlus is already running on iOS with the iPhone and iPad.

If this was true, they wouldn't have allowed Hulu on the iPad or iPhone either.

The thing people seem to fundamentally forget is that Apple's primary source of revenue is hardware sales. All the different media and app storefronts are there to create the best experience possible and drive people to their platform. This is the antithesis of the Kindle Fire, which is sold at a loss with the sole purpose of funnelling you to buy material from their storefront, where they make their money.

Apple's problems negotiating with the music labels are TENFOLD more difficult dealing with the Studios, who have longstanding deals with not just broadcasters, but 2nd and 3rd tier forms of distribution. And these deals are different for every region globally. It's a big mess!

PLUS you have the studios skittish about this whole digital thing to begin with.

If Apple had its way it would be providing all media for rent or sale in every country around the globe- but it's not up to them. And frankly it's got to be frustrating!

Ordered an AppleTV3 for iTunes & Netflix & 1080p. Have an old Roku for Amazon Videos & HBO go. Have a PS3 for blu-rays & VUDU & currently for Netflix. Still waiting on one of them to get digital concert hall from berlin philharmonic since its only on sony TVs or its tv-box (stupid PS3 doesn't have it yet so I use my Macbook to TV link). Wish Amazon & HBO go was on more than the Roku. No cable for 3 years.

none of which address the fact that it was pretty clear Apple limiting the ATV2 to 720p was more of an excuse to cause people have to upgrade.

A lot of smelled it then and now it just proves it.

It doesn't prove anything. That's your assumption. If you want to believe you've been screwed, be my guest. Technology progresses, and Apple's timetable for moving from 720p to 1080p could have been for any number of reasons.

No Hulu, no upgrade ... That's my most missed feature on ATV

It's a bummer to have a Roku and an ATV2 side by side just for my Hulu Plus subscription (cut the cord on cable last year). Jailbreaking, in my experience, definitely doesn't offer the same stability as running the latest os. I'm a novice with that stuff, though.

Definitely won't upgrade just for 1080. I'm kind of surprised there aren't more features exclusive to the new hardware from the outset, but I'm sure Apple has their reasons.

Apple TV sorting issue with Home Sharing

I'm having issues with the sorting of TV shows (no issue with movies).

Upgraded to latest iTunes and Apple TV software.

Have TV shows downloaded to a computer, some purchased via iTunes store, some ripped from purchased DVD.

When accessing a computer's library (via Home Sharing), TV shows used to display in show name order. Not so now. It appears they display in date added order. And, I'm not on the Date Added screen, but the By Show screen.

Is this limited issue? Or is everyone having this problem?

But has anyone else got the problem that all your 'TV Shows' under the users 'Computer' section is no-longer listed alphabetically, just one big mess of a list, not too impressed!!!

All my TV shows continue to be listed alphabetically by Series Title.

Thus (apparently), still nothing from Apple that can replace the 1st generation Apple TV for some of us early adapters.

Same here. My first HDTV is almost 12 years old and 1080i is ALL it will display (everything is upconverted). It won't even accept a 720p input. So yeah, I'm gonna hold on to the ATV gen 1 as long as I've got the old RCA.

And my early model plasma will not do 1080p, so I will have no need for the ATV3 for now. But like someone pointed out earlier, a quality 720p display looks better than a cheap 1080p. I can vouch for that with my plasma, which is why I'm in no rush to replace it.

You're late. ;) Check out all the other previous posts about this. I've already redownloaded all my available purchased movies from iCloud in 1080p in iTunes, with or without the new Apple TV.

Edit: I realize where there may be confusion. I'm speaking about downloading 1080p files to your Mac, which have been available on the iTunes store since yesterday. I have already confirmed in another thread that your new 1080p files will stream perfectly fine to your existing 720p Apple TV 2, but it will still playback only at 720p. I've already gotten rid of all my SD and 720p copies to save space.

I use other stuff but I have to agree...the new UI is a step backwards. The old one was crisp and clean. This looks like they made it for a 6 year old.

I like that they added movies to the cloud. I like that you can buy movies again. I like 1080p. It needs Hulu....silly hat you can use the app and AirPlay but not have Hulu native. I expected app support. In all...not a big update...kind of underwhelming but hey...it's a $99 device. Apple doesn't get a lot out of this.

I don't understand why the icons are so BIG. The one thing I had hoped they would change they left the same. I wanted my computer/movies to show up in grid view, yet nothing changed on that section. For me it's fine, but my kids like the Netflix style better.

No need to buy new Apple TV

Feel that there is no need rushing to the store for new Apple TV if you are happy with 720p and do not need 1080p.

Apple has not made any other comments about the chip on this new Apple TV.

Good news is that the new UI can be updated to the 2010 Apple TV2

Can't update

Anyone else having issue updating? It simply will not update. I get the error:

"The Apple TV update could not be downloaded at this time. Try again later."

It's been this way since update was made public yesterday.

I'll pose this question again for anyone who has upgraded - Can you still access Podcasts and if so how? I don't see it on the screen shots.

I'm encountering the same issue with Home Sharing content. I noticed after I upgraded both iTunes and Apple TV software.

This is going to sound silly, but I didn't know you could play podcasts from Apple TV 2, except via Home Sharing from an iTunes account that had downloaded the podcast. At least, that's the only way I ever did it. That functionality is still there.

Potentially silly question but...

Just found out my Samsung only goes up to 1080i (got it right on the cusp of 'all models have 1080p'). I already have an Apple TV2 and was going to upgrade to a 3 and use the 2 in my office for a tiny TV, but now I'm wondering if it's going to be worth it? Will I see any upgrade in picture from the 2 to the 3 if the TV isn't 1080p? Or is it going to essentially be equivalent to 720p when all is said and done?

No, it will just stream the 720P version.

----------

Does anyone know whether previously purchased iTunes content will automatically be upgraded to 1080P? What about stuff that was previously purchased in SD, will it still stream the SD version?
