Reconsidering my entertainment hub... in a bad way
Really, this is a disappointing release, for the following reasons:
1. No Hulu. Having cut the cable long ago, and Hulu & Netflix are almost all of my video viewing, with a 70/30 split of Hulu over NetFlix. Sadly, the no Hulu issue, is forcing me to use my Roku for 70% of my viewing.
2. 1080 is nice, but I suspect it will exacurbate my NetFlix viewing woes. As I stutter through most NetFlix movies at 720p, I suspect that will get worse at 1080 - and yes, I do have a big fat broadband pipe, that is hard-wired to my ATV2. If I had to choose between reliable 720, and unreliable 1080, 720 would win every time.
3. No app ecosystem... really, this sucks.
For me, ATV is an Airplay enabler, for my on-premise library. But Roku will now be my online video playback device. It sucks that I now have to use two devices, and that Apple is letting it's download revenues interfere with a chance to be the home-entertainment hub for all content. And yes, I understand Apple's dilemma, and can appreciate that they don't want to mess with a reliable revenue stream. I'm just saying that it sucks, for me.
So, this latest release has me searching for a replacement as a viable entertainment hub that will serve both on-premise and hosted content. And whatever solution I choose will likely impact all of my future purchases (smartphones, PCs, TVs, Audio, etc.). I've been riding the Apple wave for a while, but having to go elsewhere for 70% of my online viewing content is causing me to reconsider.
