For the life of me, I can't figure out why it's taken so long to get Hulu+ on the ATV.

Maybe because studios are playing hard with Apple? They still fear that Apple will demand a lower subscription price or else. Whatever the reason is, Hulu is a totally different animal compared to Netflix. Hulu is directly owned by the studios and still they are scratching their heads wondering if going full streaming is profitable for them. Dinosaurs.

As for me who I upgraded my Apple TV 2 to the new UI (and in Colombia, South America) I love my Netflix stream but I'm yearning for Hulu to come here to LatAm. Maybe next year?

hi guys,

i just got a sony smart tv, and my brothers got me an apple tv for my bday. would I use the apple tv, or should i just return it and let my brothers save their money?

Thanks

Go to the nearest Apple Store on your place. Take your shiny new Apple TV. They will change yours to the new one with no charge (the catch is that you have to buy an older model in a 30 day window frame before a new model appears for sale). Go to your house. Enjoy it.

Hmmmmm

Yip,
Surely 1080p should be playable on an iMac.
I certainly wouldn't upgrade to an ATV3 if 1080p video was scarce.
Certainly the availability of HD video in any form on iTunes is quite scarce in the UK.

Does anyone have the same problem with the AppleTV2: I rented a movie and watch it a few days later. In the middle of it suddenly it stoops and the circle starts to rotate, than after a couple minutes it says "ready to watch in X time", where X is increasing from 50 minutes to 3 hours within a minute or so. At the same time streaming Netflix is no issue at all so its not the network... I am bringing this up here as I hoped for a storage capacity on the ATv as I never have that issue if I streamed an already downloaded movie from the iPad. It seems that the AppleTV is downloading the movie after renting but if e.g. Netflix is being streamed in the meantime it forgets the downloaded one and starts all over again...?

I had that problem Saturday night. Tried to watch Hugo and I kept getting "Ready to watch in 2-3 hours" Finally gave up and bought the Bluray and requested a refund.

Could someone clear something up for me... Now that the aTV can play things from iCloud, that means we don't need to have our Macs switched on to watch our content doesn't it? If so, that in itself is a big upgrade.

For many users, that is absolutely correct, assuming of course that all of the TV/Movie content you have is purchased from iTunes. Video from other sources will only stream from your computer with iTunes open.

Other than that, if you use Photostream you can access that from ATV. iTunes Match, same deal. TV & Movies (with the exception of a few studios) from iTunes--all of it can be accessed via the web without having iTunes running.

The only other thing to consider is data usage. ISP's like Comcast have a 250GB per month cap--after that your speeds will be throttled and streaming video from the web will basically no longer work. I've been there a few times and it's no fun.

If you're streaming HD video content over the web, that will eat up a lot of bandwidth--and may not perform well 100% of the time for 1080p in particular. If the things you want to watch are on your computer, you may be better served to just access them locally.

Potentially silly question but...

Just found out my Samsung only goes up to 1080i (got it right on the cusp of 'all models have 1080p'). I already have an Apple TV2 and was going to upgrade to a 3 and use the 2 in my office for a tiny TV, but now I'm wondering if it's going to be worth it? Will I see any upgrade in picture from the 2 to the 3 if the TV isn't 1080p? Or is it going to essentially be equivalent to 720p when all is said and done?

No, you really don't need to since they're in iCloud now.

However, I just found out that some of my movies aren't available in iCloud; the ones that were removed from purchasing and only available for rent. This is kind of an inconvenient setback that makes me less comfortable deleting my files just yet.

I've contacted iTunes support about this. People who paid to purchase their content should be able to download them from iCloud even if its not available for purchase anymore.

Are only movies that you purchased from iTunes in the iCloud or can you upload your own files there?

Qwerty?

Does anyone know if it has a QWERTY keyboard layout for entering text? The ABCDEFG . . . is so aggravating sometimes!

I haven't the tried latter, but I would guess no, that wouldn't work. It's all based on your purchase history. It isn't iTunes Match for movies yet unfortunately

In the UK the new AppleTV can only get 1080P content from Apple by renting movies, so no TV shows and no purchases :( This is a pity, my internet connection isn't even good enough to rent a 720P movie. Also I'd love to upgrade some of my TV shows, the BBC's Planet Earth and South Pacific natural history shows would be absolutely amazing!

Most probably your TV is only 1366x768 or something like that. There is no such thing as 1080i in digital panels. However, it might have a HDMI input that only supports 1080i. That is true of some TVs. The TV takes a 1080i signal and converts it to fill a 1366x768 or a 1280x720 panel.

Rearrange icons

Anyone know if there is a way to rearrange the icons or get rid of some?

New UI is horrible

Updated my 2nd gen Apple TV and the UI is horrible. It's wasn't great before, but this is even worse. Ir's reminiscent of the crappy UI on bluray players or smart TVs. There is no way to customize or hide anything. I only use Netflix and podcasts. Everything else is bloatware to me. Sorry Apple, but you need to fix this.

And so would I see any benefit with the new apple tv?

So can we upgrade the older iTV version 2 system to run this new interface? Is the only difference the 1080P?

Yes apple released an update today.

----------

To bad a new version of Handbrake was released one week ago. Now have to wait another year for an ATV3 preset.

Make your own presets there extremely easy to do. I never use any of the built in versions.

Hulu and Plex....Then I'll buy one. Plex is already on iOS (as is Hulu)- just open up the Apple TV to an app store and all is good.

It should be able to output to 1080i. In either case, it's tough to tell the difference from 1080p or 1080i to 720p unless you're within five or so feet (at least for me)

1080p Finally!

Finally Apple is catching up with the rest of the world, 1080p. I've been saying for years that once they support 1080p I would buy one. My pre-order is in, March 16th - Can't wait!

----------

Just upgraded iTunes and turned on 1080p, but can't find any available 1080p videos?
Am I missing something?

Check out Scrubs, Season 9(just the first example I found - Big Bang Theory, Season 5 also) Under the "$24.99 Buy Season" button, there is the text "HD: Includes 720p, 1080p". Also, in your iTunes go to your iTunes preferences, go to the Store tab and see there is an option of defaulting to 1080p when downloading HD.

I use other stuff but I have to agree...the new UI is a step backwards. The old one was crisp and clean. This looks like they made it for a 6 year old.

I like that they added movies to the cloud. I like that you can buy movies again. I like 1080p. It needs Hulu....silly hat you can use the app and AirPlay but not have Hulu native. I expected app support. In all...not a big update...kind of underwhelming but hey...it's a $99 device. Apple doesn't get a lot out of this.
