NOOOOOOOOOOO.

They haven't killed it yet but give it a year and the only way you can use Final Cut, logic, etc will be with a subscription. Going the way of adobe. Incredibly awful, horrible news.
I need a replacement to adobe.. looking for a replacement for a PDF editor. Just something basic to combine multiple files/pages into one and "compress" lower the file size of the PDF...

But …if i own already Final Cut, Logic, pixelmator Pro ???? They offer a refund ? ☺️
I do own those, I feel like this is a scam for users who already own... There should be a one time purchase for iPad apps or something...

I personally really want Pixelmator pro on iPad but as I see, I think it's only a subscription thing probably like Final Cut for iPad... DAMN STOP IT with subscriptions on iPad... Every app should be compatible with both so if you buy one on Mac then you get on iPad for your life.... But no...

For $12.99 / month - it's a bargain. With all the updates that have been free over the years, you can't expect them to just give it away forever. They have to pay employees to write the code to build these apps. It's a better deal than Adobe as I suspect you can use it on multiple devices on your apple account vs Adobe you need a license for each computer. If you are already paying for logic/final cut for iPad, it's only a couple bucks more for access to everything.

At some point they were going to charge for a new version of Logic and Final Cut anyway, so that's what $5-600 ish... so really you are just splitting that cost over 6/7 ( 🙂 ) years, plus the other apps like mainstage and pixelmator bring the value up to what $1K ?, so really you are just splitting your payments over 10 years....

I came expecting a huge mug of Copium, but this is spectacular.

Why doesn't apple have real competitive apps to Adobe? I want to rid myself of adobe so bad but nothing really comes close.

I don’t know why I should pay for these features in iWork when I can pay less per month for real Word and Excel plus 1TB of storage 🤷‍♂️
I use the "real" Word at work regularly. I experience a lot of frustration as a result. I especially hate the find and replace in Word. It requires mental focus and exertion because the places where you have to click are very small, as is the text entry for that particular function. I hate that it opens up as a panel on the screen instead of a dialog box.

I think you're giving Microsoft way too much credit.

But you do have a point as far as the 1 TB of storage goes.

Ugh now it’s only a matter of time for them to remove already available features on iWork so they can sell them via subscription…

It's inevitable cause one time payment will only kill their own pro apps which already did and that's why a lot of pro users complained about lack of features on FCP in 2022 which never fixed.

And support developments. Tell that to a dev, does he/she must work for you for free?
It's almost like everyone has forgotten that this is a problem of Apple's own making. There used to be this thing called upgrade pricing. Back before the AppStore destroyed software monetization we would expect to pay for our software up front and then when we wanted new features we would pay for the upgrade to get those new features... We didn't have to pay perpetually to access already developed features, instead we bought a product and used that product. Subscriptions actually disincentivize developers from having to offer new features as the customer just always has to pay if they want access to the product.

Maybe because those of us who use Adobe apps to make money as part of long-standing careers with investments in ancillary tools in multiplatform environments, for whom the subscription fees amount pennies based on billables, aren't going to switch to anything produced by a company with a history of capricious decisions, abandonment, and a lack of public feature timelines when it comes to professonal software development.

Would you trust Apple to make and indefinitely support the software tools you need to make money? I wouldn't.

With Gemini coming to macOS instead of Numbers, Pages, and Keynote I'd definitely go for G00gle Sheets, Docs and Slides: their AI can do great stuff there.

Yeah, other than subscription fatigue I don’t see how anyone can be upset about this.
Especially if you are in education or going to school, $2.99 a month for access to logic pro? I mean, come on. Has there ever been a better deal than that? GarageBand used to cost more, iLife used to be $99 for every yearly update.
Add the education rate of $30 a year, it would take you 10 years to even reach what FinalCut costs on its own.
And you get access to the iPad version, and you get all of the apps included, and you get family sharing with up to six people… and the standalone purchase options are still available?
I mean, if Apple had to go the subscription way, at least they’ve done it the right way. It’s not required, it’s not overly expensive, and it is a real value.
Let’s not forget that in the 2000s FinalCut Pro was $1000 on its own and every time a major update came out you had to purchase it once again.
Sometimes I think people are just so blinded by the Internet rage echo chamber that they forget how good we really have it these days. I mean, being able to get a full completely intact pro digital audio workstation, the same one used by actual professionals in the business, for the same price of one coffee a month?
Just 30 years ago a set up like that would cost not just thousands of dollars, but hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Very upset that there is no Pro version of Photos in here. Part of the Pixelmator acquisition was Photomator, and I was hoping Apple would make a pro version that could manage better multiple libraries, advanced management features etc...

No one said anything about getting free apps, they said subscriptions. I agree and will pay for the app, up front. If they want to change for the next iteration/version upgrade, that's fine.

Currently have zero app subscriptions, but I have spent a decent amount on apps (mac and ios) over the years.

Thank you! This is the truth. There are a lot of apps out there where the developers claim that a subscription is necessary to support development and get more frequent updates, but most of them only receive one or two updates a year. There is zero incentive for developers to update their apps when they use a subscription model, because the sad truth is that most people keep paying regardless of what’s happening.
