I have a serious question, and I would appreciate some intelligent feedback, not whinging please.

In Australia, the base dual CPU 2.26, to upgrade to the dual 2.93 version, costs another $4700 (yes you read that right).
Can I buy the base model, buy 2 new 2.93ghz Xeons from newegg or where ever, and plug them into the base machine?

From what I am reading the processors brand new should run sub $1000? Is that not a better way to go? And then maybe even sell the 2.26 ones I pulled out?

Or is a switch like this not possible? Need a new Power supply? Need different motherboard? I just don't want the hassle or brain drain to worry about a hackintosh, please don't suggest it.

No processor is going to be twice as fast than the old generation at same frequency. But this is still the biggest jump in performance compared to earlier Mac Pro upgrades. I remember 2008 Mac Pro wasn't that much faster than 2006 Mac Pro.

No, but there was a jump from 4 x 2.66GHz to 8 x 2.8GHz with only a
relatively small increase in price (~£100). That is pretty much double
the performance for efficiently multi-threaded apps. You won't be
getting that this time around without paying a much higher price.

The processors are $1386 wholesale in lots of $1,000. They are currently offered (pre-order) for $1,600-$1,700 each. They won't go below $1,400. So you are looking at say $3,000 US.

Where the hell is it?

My main question is..

Where the hell is the SAS drives?!?

Everything else seems in-line with what I was expecting, except for the RAM configs and Graphics cards. I would have liked to see multiples of 3 for RAM configs, and some more workstation cards available.

Oh well can't do it right all the time.

Ok so $3000 US is $4615 AUD, apple charge $4700, so they are not ripping us off? Everyone os spewing at the price, but if that is what the processor costs, I am having a hard time following the rip off line of attack?(Not saying your attacking, just the community in general)

Why are people throwing around prices of $300 bucks then. I am lost.

The quad has hyper-threading so it will show up as 8 in Activity Monitor. Also, in the upgrade page you can go 2.93 for not much more, which will run at 3.2 due to Turbo Boost.

Huh?

1) Hyperthreading is as old as the P4. Who gives a sht about how the processor will show up in Activity Monitor. The actual speed boost will be 10-20% max.

2) "not much more". It's $500 more. An i7 920 costs $280, anyone can run it at 3.2 GHz, most people can easily overclock it to 3.8 GHz.

3) What's up with 1066 MHz memory? 1600 MHz is pretty much standard on i7 systems, 1333 the minimum.

So, you get a slower computer than just about any DIY PC for twice the money? Sounds about right. Forget the quad cores.

What's going on here?

Has anyone forgotten about the SAS drives. They are a beauty to record music with. Shame on Apple for this. I already emailed Jobs, I suggest everyone do the same... let him know how unhappy you are.

I'm so excited that I'm wetting myself.

I'm getting a new Mac Pro!!!

It will replace my G4 Dual 1 Ghz Quicksilver tower from 2002. That's 7 years of use! And guess what? That machine still works just fine for nearly everything. Is anyone still using such a machine?

I have been running my Pro Apps from a MacBook Pro for that past 18 months, and getting sick of connecting all the peripherals.

I've waited largely because I wasn't sure that the current generation of towers would do well with the transition to Intel chips.

The latest Mac Pros are really the 3rd generation since the switch, and you know how the 3rd time's a charm!

I'm gettin' one!!!

I find it slightly disturbing that you can spend $22,585.90 (excl. tax) on one single page on the Apple Store!

Look you get free shipping though!

You know, this is a custom mobo which probably cost a mint to produce. Not many people are buying these things in the down economy. What I'm trying to say is: their profit margins probably aren't as high as you think on this product.

This is all the fault of people clamoring for nehalem processors. It took some jerry-rigging and an increase in production cost, but you got your wish! congrats! I hope that 15% boost in Motion was worth the cut in RAM capacity!

Oh, and the video card, as someone else said, is slower than the 8800 (unless you pay way too much and get the ATI which isn't even out yet so you'll be waiting 3 months to get it).

All I wanted was a faster video card so I could stick it in my 2006 mac pro, but how could I be disappointed with all this?

What about HW RAID standard? Like in the PC version of this product? I guess we Mac users should be satisfied with the few things apple allows us to have.

I am digging the added firewire 800 ports though... not that I own a single fw800 device... And I like the RAM drawer... because the old way was soooo much more difficult.

Just realized there are no new ACDs to go with the worthless video cards in the Mac Pros. :mad: No Quadros and No FirePros, either. :(

And here's a picture.

On the Mac Pros that have two processors the max cost to apple (and eventually to the public) are:
2.26GHz = $375 each.
2.66GHz = $958 each.
2.93GHz = 1,386 each.

On the single socket Mac Pro:
2.66Ghz = $284.
2.93GHz = $562.

Can't use single socket processors on a dual socket board.

They used to give you two $800 processors, so think about that and you can see why some people are complaining about the price.

Does this surprise you? 50% of US citizens pay no income tax, but expect free health care. Our whole economy is going down the tubes as people bought houses they had no ability to pay for. The government is printing money and spending it, when they are completely broke.

today's times are ALL ABOUT getting something for nothing, and Apple is not playing with that theme, so people are going to BMC about it....

I have a 2008 3ghz octocore mac pro, so I'm not going to be upgrading personally, but this is brand new technology and it's going to be expensive for awhile. If you can't afford it, move along and buy something you can actually pay for people.

That entire post made me laugh out loud. Well said.

I'm curious about the benchmarks. I wonder if the new 2.66 ghz 8 core is going to be faster than the 2008 3.2 8 core.
It sure costs more.

I think the best way for me to go is to get the single CPU 2.93 with the ATI card.
I think it will be a good improvement over the Quad G5 i use now, and I am not worried it is not the most powerful one I can get. I think the single Quad 2.93 for $5899, will be a great investment for my company, considering over the 3 year expected lifespan, it will crank our over $300,000 worth of work.

I will get another 3GB ram elsewhere to spec it up a bit, as I think apple makes you pay a premium for RAM, but I will shop around and weigh up the options.

For now though, I think i will sit and wait to see some real world benchmarks on the single CPU Vs Dual CPU.
