When do we get M1 in an iPhone?
We probably won’t... M1 is very powerful and at first it was intended for laptops/desktops. Even on an iPad it seems too much for me. It makes no sense to put the processing power of a Mac in an iPhone, because what are you going to do on a phone with a tiny display except for sending a text and playing a game of some sorts?

I really hope with the next iPad they will give an option for macOS, seeing the UI of Big Sur. I need to upgrade my iPad 5th gen and if Apple is not doing this, I’ll go to Surface. M1 on iPad seems useless without macOS.

This year I'm planning to buy iPad Pro (thinking about 256/512GB 8GB RAM 12.9" version).
MacOS or enhanced iPadOS 15... In my case it's a secondary issue.
What I need but currently can't get from iPadOS?
I wanna run XCode, IntelliJ Idea; second one is less plausible because of need of JVM.
My second use case is Procreate/Photoshop (so MB is not enough).

I wonder if 16GB versions will have some advantages to 8GB when it comes to running OS (not just more RAM, that can be useful in some apps, but definitely won't be required; but to run OS, like MacOS).

But macOS doesn't know touch screen interface and Apps (very often limited Applications). Trackpad is different. Can't see them solving this soon so, if you must touch (?) compromise with iPad or go Microsoft.

Who ever bought the 2020 iPad Pro must be feeling very betrayed. He got the least updated iPad with almost 3years old CPU.

I'm not.
It doesn't reduce the performance of my iPad, it's still super fast. I don't need the extra power

The 2020 update introduce:
Better GPU, more ram, double the storage, better camera, lidar, and stereo mic
All of this for the same price, not a bad upgrade ;)

Spent last night thinking about this and not seeing the realistic reason for this in the Pro. M1 is top of the line yet RAM is not. Not seeing any apps that would come close to needing or even using this unless they plan on a MacOS hybrid (touch). Even that is still suspect with other new hardware on that side. Unless the MacOS piece happens, enhanced hardware to this level won't change my use case. I'll still need the PC level (Mac or Windows) for the tasks an iPad cannot execute - OS limitations.

I'm in the wait and see category.

I think they went with the M1 because they had a lot of them... Remember that Apple had the opportunity to pick up a bunch of extra wafers on TSMC 5nm because of the Huawei ban... Maybe they were the only chip ready to go? I‘m sure there are more M1 devices coming... I think TSMC has better than forecasted yields as they shrink their process. I hope there’s a glut of M2s as well!

Moving forward, maybe it’s just not worth it for Apple to design different chips for the iPad pros/entry level macs? They’re close enough, and maybe gives Apple possibilities to consider in future OS versions that wouldn’t be possible if they shipped them with a lesser than M1 ‘A14x’...

Why develop multiple different types of processors for different types of machines when you can develop only one?
They save a lot of cash this way

I can see that but why marry it to 4x ram instead of 5? Like building a race car and putting street tires on it.
Just not seeing what this level of an increase is getting us, the user....

I think the RAM bump is forward looking for the capabilities iPadOS *is* gaining in the future personally.

Yeah, I also think M1 is used in the iPad because Apple is already producing a large number of them. It's a supply chain logistic thing, which is right up Tim Cook's alley. It's not a "hint" that MacOS will come to iPad. We know it's not going to happen. Otherwise they should call the iPad a Mac too.

Because Apple only has M1 chips with 8GB RAM and 16GB RAM right now. Adding any other arbitrary amount of RAM means adding more SKUs. Why dedicate chip wafers to just the iPads when you can make 8GB and 16GB M1 chips for: MacBook Air/Pro, Mac Mini, iMac 24 and iPad Pro?

P.S.: will Apple put M1 in iPhone Pro too? I'd say: that's not completely out. M1 scales very well, so it may still fit in an iPhone. It'll just thermal-throttle more often than if it was in a MacBook or iPad.

I was more curious on why use DDR4x instead of DDR5 as the 5 would be better I would think, especially with the M1.
Just thinking ... yes, dangerous ;)

LPDDR4X is better for battery life. It operates at 0.6V as opposed to 1.1V for LPDDR4/5.

That I did not know.\This was the chart I was working from. Thx

Apple is well known to not use cutting edge technologies but to prefer more mature and well-integrated technology
For example, the modem inside the iPhone is always one generation older, but the drivers are very well tested and optimized.

Awesome to see, now they just need to allow for a dual boot option - WWDC maybe?
I’m waiting on wwdc to decide whether this replaces my 2018 iPad Pro. If there isn’t a big OS change that leverages the new processor, I’ll hold off.

Interesting timing, though - Adobe is recruiting for a new round of Photoshop and LightRoom testers. I wonder...

From a purely commercial point of view you are obviously correct, and this is probably the line Apple will take for the foreseeable future.

From a technical point of view the new iPad Pro can run MacOS as well as any other M1 powered Mac.
Frankly, the quoted comment is irrelevant with no further information to back it up. Why shouldn’t it? Because MacOS doesn’t support touch? Because there needs to be a reason to buy two different devices?

I’m hoping they blend the OSs. That’s what it would take to pull me (and many others) away from Windows completely.

Yeah, that chart seems to grossly oversimplify things. I was mistaken about LPDDR4X operating at 0.6V (that's only for I/O), but LPDDR5 isn't doing better. Here's the latest development from Samsung:

But this is all moot in a sense. M1 was designed with LPDDR4X, and I'd imagine that's all Apple is stocking. It makes no sense to jump to LPDDR5 specifically for the iPad. Maybe the M1X or M2 will have LPDDR5.

There is a lot here that makes little sense with what we know. Wait and see.
Till then I will keep my 2020 IPP :)
