I've seen too many jokes made about boomers using their iPad cameras that I don't think they'll ever be accepted by 'pro iPad users' - I think that ship has sailed.

I'd be self-conscious using the iPad to take pics :) - and I'm not a boomer.
I wouldn't go sight-seeing in a group or to a sporting event and wield an iPad around to take photos. But I think things like "scanning" documents or snapping pictures of the board if you're in a classroom taking notes are uh... "socially acceptable" uses of the ipad rear camera. And the AR experience is definitely better than a tiny phone screen.

I’m not saying this in a negative way jist being honest - hardware boost is nice but hardware hasn’t truly been the issue

I have an iPad Pro and love it, but I still find myself needing a MacBook from time to time due to OS limitations. I’m hoping they truly unlock the potential
Fully agree. I think today's announcement is fantastic news for those who have managed to make an iPad their primary daily device. I really tried to do this at the end of last year, but ultimately just couldn't deal with the limitations of iOS. I picked up an M1 MBP and am very happy, and kept the iPad Pro for content consumption, etc.

Given Apple is laying the framework for a universal binary, it’s entirely possible that the app could choose the UI most suitable for a given task. Say you’re using Word, it’ll present the touch interface until you connect a mouse and keyboard, where it will transition to that UI complete with menu bar and smaller UI elements. I think that’s where the convergence lies…in the individual apps, not in running MacOS on the iPad.
Yes, I think that’s the aim of the magic keyboard, and that shared apps is a great solution, but things get complex with i.e. logic or Final Cut Pro.

The M1 move is a surprise to me as I suspected the chip was custom designed for the underpinnings macOS. I thought M stood for Mac. I wonder if it is altered for ipados or if there really is zero difference at the hardware level (I always thought hardware-software integration was beneficial even at the processor level).
This also makes me wonder where Apple is going with this. Will previous gen M chips make its way into lower end iPads? Flagship iPhones and flagship iPad have historically shared the same chip. Is this the divergence or will all Apple’s devices eventually share the same M series chips (probably saving the costs of maintaining two separate series)?
And if there really is no need for different SoCs for macOS and ipados respectively (and even iOS since it’s the same as ipados), then what barriers are left to stand in the way of a dual boot iPad Pro? Other than maybe Apple thinking it would be too jarring for the UX or just not wanting to for profit reasons.
The more important question is why is Apple delegating the iiPad Pro 2021 using M1 chip to just iPad OS?

The profit margins would be larger for iPad and its more protecting Mac sales.

IMO it really doesn’t need MacOS. They just need to do two simple things to iPadOS....

1. An actual fully developed file system and external drive management solution. You have the files app, just update it with a full file system where apps can actually see documents from other apps. Also having the ability to properly manage external drives like formatting and so on would be extremely useful.

2. Allow M1 equipped iPads to run MacOS apps just like they allow iPad apps to run on M1 macs. Rosetta would be nice but probably would never happen...

Do those two things and I think iPadOS would be everything the iPad Pro would need to be a true replacement for the Mac without actually running MacOS.

I agree with you and the more I think about it, the lesser the chance I think it will happen.

If their graphic is correct then there's 59 dimming zones covering 2732 pixels, and 42 dimming zones covering 2048 pixels. So that one zone covering roughly a 46x49 block of pixels... bring on the possible light bleed at 1000 nits when you have bright and dark in the same dimming zone. I'll wait to see if the reviews say it's noticable or not.

The only logical thing is that in 6 weeks they will talk about iPad OS 15 and hopefully its more than just the typical scaled up iOS with a new name which is all it is at this point. It needs to be a hybrid or full on Mac OS. And with Mac OS looking WAAAAY MORE like iOS with larger control center, etc. I would hope we get something MUCH closer to Mac OS.

The new iPad Pro 12.9” looks good. The only letdown is the cameras. Their presentation said they know iPad users like to take pictures and videos…followed by nothing great for camera upgrades

The new pro iPad is kinda awesome, with many existing features. But the 11" model is not having the new display is a sad truth. I would prefer to put the miniLED into the 11". If so, I will definitely buy one. I don't like the big guy (12.9"), because I am happy with my MacBook pro and doing stuff with laptop only (as many of us do, I believe).

So, it is kinda weird decision for Apple to allow such a complicated model portfolio.

Unless you need an actual usable tablet and not a giant iPhone. Then surfaces are better.
Surface Pro is still a different animal. Surface Pro is still a full computer with touch support. I suspect we’ll see MacOS begin offering varying degrees of touch support soon after this hardware release, blurring the line between iOS and MacOS. Until then, the iPad is still a tablet only.

Have you got a link to the reviews? I can find nothing online, all the major tech sites are only using details off the presentation, there is no indication anyone has released reviews yet.
