Let's face it, no one really needs the retina display. It's just the latest technology and we're all tech geeks and it's the new "must have" item. We want it purely to spoil ourselves......at least I find that's usually the case with me.

i guess the apple pro user -the way i understand it- is dead... the message today was -for me-, that apple is going fully to the consumer markt... mountain lion and gestures make sense on a laptop, many ipad-like features... siri telling me about football scores, gamecenter for the mac or tweeting or liking every **** on my screen... they are going to the slick lifestyle powercomputer... a very nice design to pleasably play with my computer, designers or writers are going to have a joy with this new laptops... but i guess we are definetly living the last days of the hardcore macpro towers.

No 1440x900?

Am I the only one thinks emulating 1680x1050 or 1920x1200 resolution on a 2880x1800 native display won't look as clean as 1440x900? I get the appeal of the extra pixels if for some reason you don't want to run at 2880x1800, but wouldn't 1440x900 be a logical choice as well?

looking at the buy options, there is no option to increase the size of the flash storage in the base model !!!

you have to buy the more expensive machine just to get 512 GB .... fail.

Yep, I just noticed that too. Makes me glad I'm not in the market for a new laptop cause 256 GB is too little (I'm already thinking I need to replace my hard drive that is only that size on this laptop) and I wouldn't want to pay 600 dollars extra just to get more storage.

Also... do they use a standard hard drive sized space for that or is it soldered into the motherboard? Basically, how hard/easy is it to replace the storage space if you just wanted to do it yourself (or it failed)?

Well, the new retina MBP is awesome, and I want one - but the lack of BTO options is a big issue for me.

The 2.3GHz base model is £1800 + £160 for the 16GB RAM u/g (which I can live with) but the lack of a 512GB SSD u/g is a major problem.

I've been using a FW800 drive with my current MBP due to lack of disk space (160GB) and I don't want to be doing the same in 12-18 months.

The only way to get 512GB is to get the 2.6GHz model which is £2300 + £160 for the 16GB u/g which is a bit too much.

What makes this all the more annoying is that there is a 768GB SSD u/g for the 2.6GHz model.

Going to think about this for a while and maybe go for the MBP "Classic" with the hi-res screen option which I can u/g the RAM and SSD myself.

EDIT: Hmmm, MBP "Classic" 2.6GHz, £1800 + £80 for the hi-res screen, then I can get 16GB Corsair Vengeance for £95 and a 512GB Crucial m4 for £340 giving a total of £2315 against £2460 (£2300 + £160) for the 2.6GHz/16GB retina, so maybe the latter isn't so bad after all? Only downside then is that in 3 years when 1TB SSDs are cheap I won't be able to u/g the retina MBP if I need to

Give it some time. It took a while for MBP 17 to get refreshed last time around as well.

It's gone from the Apple Store so it looks like it's terminal. Which is a shame as I was waiting for a refresh to update mine. Now I think i will just hang on to it for the moment. A smaller retina screen doesn't really cut it for me. It has more pixels sure, but at 2880x1800 it's presumably going to be a crisper version of the same material which would display at 1440x900, which is nowhere near 1920x1200.

I love it but it's just too expensive... This is the future but I will have to wait until the price falls.

The screen is hardly the draw for me...

The thin body, lack of optical-dinasaur drive, better battery, and power are what I want!!

Oh, and that new heat management system!!

What's so great about eliminating the optical drive? If you don't like it, don't use it.

There are a lot of us (mostly professionals) who still have use for it. It remains an inexpensive way to backup documents and present large files (or collection of files) to clients or vendors – especially those clients who don't upgrade their computers every 10 minutes and aren't interested in spending 5 hours downloading 8GB of files.

Apple is the only company that can take away a feature without offering anything substantial in return and have its fans cheer in response.

The storage is very annoying really... just use an external :D

Looks Amazing, even though I can no way afford it, but I'm sure just like anything we'll eventually see it on low end Macs..

£2,458.99 incl. VAT going to Apple ASAP.
MacBook Pro, Retina display, 2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz, 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM, 512GB Flash Storage.
Thank you very much. I'm happy. ;)

So I'm at the Apple Checkout page, and with student discount it comes to $1999 and says that you get a $100 gift card and it won't charge you for it....but it's showing up in the cart bringing the total to $2099. Anyone else having this problem?????

Price seems high...no?

They put the retina display in the iPad, and the price stayed the same.

I'll pass.

The only thing I dislike about the current version (and all Apple's current displays) is the highly reflective screen, due to the untreated glass they put in front of the display. But this time they mentioned a significant reduction in glare, so that is something to be happy about too! The website says:

This Retina display doesn’t sit behind a layer of glass, it is the glass. Which means you get all the benefits of a state-of-the-art display — vibrant colors, high contrast, and wide viewing angles — with very little glare. So there’s more to see, and even less to distract you from your work.
Finally Apple! :)

But at the same time they removed the option for an anti-glare aka matte screen. I'll bet you dollars to donuts that the new screen is still gonna be WAY too glossy for people who've always chosen the matte screen option. So now that Apple has removed the anti glare screen option, a whole lotta people are gonna be s.o.l. and Apple will lose a not insignificant number of sales over it.

Does anyone know if you can upgrade from 8gb to 16gb at a later date? Or are you stuck with what you originally get like the Air?
