But at the same time they removed the option for an anti-glare aka matte screen. I'll bet you dollars to donuts that the new screen is still gonna be WAY too glossy for people who've always chosen the matte screen option. So now that Apple has removed the anti glare screen, a whole lotta people are gonna be s.o.l. and Apple will lose a not insignificant number of sales over it.

Hmm… You might be right. (Typing this on my 2011 MBP with anti-glare option.) I'd better not say too much until I actually see one of these new screens in person methinks.

Windows 7 + Retina + Thunderbolt

I have to run Windows 7 on my MBP. Does anybody know if Windows 7 has drivers for all the new features? Specifically the Retina and thunderbolt.

The Apple tax!!! I feel bad for non-US buyers, they pay ridiculous prices.

Unfortunatly Apples does sell at this price in Brazil. So while Brazilians pay $5000 for it, Apple will charge. I also dont think this is all government taxes, there a lot of Apple tax too.

PS.: I'm not buying it. :(

What the mac pro is not geting usb 3.o and thunder bolt updates?!?!?!

at wwdc today, apple introduced a third line of notebook computers that phil schiller called the "next generation macbook pro." he noted that the company was "willing to discard old, legacy things" to make a new notebook that was radically thin and light. An apple video called it "the very best computer that we've ever built."

image

the new macbook pro -- which is in addition to the existing line of pro's, which was also updated today -- is built around a 15.4" retina display at a 2880x1880 resolution, 220 ppi with 5,184,000 pixels, with a display that is built directly into the unibody construction to make the notebook lighter.

It includes quad-core ivy bridge processors up to 2.8ghz and turbo boost up to 3.7ghz, up to 16gb of macbook air-like non-upgradable 1600mhz ram, and a maximum of 768gb of next generation flash storage. The new pro weighs in at 4.46 pounds and is 0.71" thick, but does not include a macbook air-like tapered body. There is no optical drive.

Apple has developed a new type of fan to keep the machine cool. It uses an asymmetrical blade system to cool the machine while being as quiet as possible. Apple claims the thermal management system operates in a way that is nearly imperceptible to the user.

Apple claims 7 hours of battery life with 30 days of standby time. It includes an sd slot, hdmi, and a usb 3.0/2.0 combo port on the right side, and a magsafe power port, two thunderbolt ports, another usb 3.0/2.0 port and a headphone jack on the left. Apple will soon begin offering a firewire 800 and gigabit ethernet to thunderbolt adapters. The machine also includes "the best stereo speakers ever put into a desktop or notebook" and dual microphones.

pricing begins at $2,199 for the base model with the retina display, a 2.3ghz quad-core ivy bridge i7, 8gb of ram, a nvidia geforce gt 650m 1gb graphics card, and 256gb of flash storage. The next generation macbook pro begins shipping today.

Regarding the retina display, apple will ship a special build of lion with hidpi support built-in, and will include updated versions of iphoto, mail and safari to support the increased resolution. Final cut pro and aperture are also receiving updates as well. Apple has been working with major developers to get their apps updated, including adobe photoshop, autodesk's autocad, and blizzard's diablo iii.

$3454 with student discount for a fully loaded 15" Retina.....

Man, I make some pretty good money but this is a tough pill to swallow...My 13" Air is a speed demon, and serves me well, but man would this new machine be nice....

up to 16GB of MacBook Air-like non-upgradable 1600MHz RAM

so RAM whatever you select when you purchase your configuration, you are stuck with? that means i have to pay there ridiculous +$200 to go from 8gb to 16gb and cannot put in another stick myself?

any help? wanna make sure i understand this right

I've used a Sony Vaio P with its 8" 1600 x 768 display (~220DPI) and everything was just much too small. It was great that everything looked sharp but I felt as if my eye balls were falling out trying to squint at tiny texts.

The new MBP looks great. Who'd thunk a MacBook update would be the center of attention at this WWDC?

Thats why Mac OS enables HiDPI mode. It means that instead of everything taking up 1 pixel and looking 4x smaller, they take up 4x the pixels and have 4x the detail.

Price seems high...no?

I'll pass.

I guess my question is: how much did you think it was going to be?

A standard MBP 15” base model is ~$1800 (USD), an upgraded 8GB is $2200, this is an entirely new chassis, with dual TB ports, the +brand+ new display technology, SSD, etc., for $2200. if anything I’m surprised it’s not a little more than the upgraded non-retina 15” (more like 2300-2400).

I think there will be a number of folks who would like the larger SSD but who don’t want to pay the premium for the CPU upgrade (like a $2499 512GB, 2.3Ghz model).

That seems to be correct. However, $200 for 16GB is a good deal.

I think just a few morons will. The ones that have $5000 to do it, also have money enough to travel abroad and buy one a lot cheaper. And have a little vacation too.

Said the MacPro was dead before. Ok, so they did not kill it they just sliced it's wrists and are going to let it bleed all over the floor.

Who ever buy's one of these turkeys get's what they deserve and to those who ridiculed me before because I said it was going to be killed, Bite Me. It is dead, Apple is just forcing the market to justify what it wants to do anyway.

but ...

I just sent in a Macrumors tip....

THE MAC PRO DID GET UPDATED! (silently)

Go to the store, you'll see the "new" tag on it.

and go check out the base specs, the cost of ram upgrades, it's all CHANGED :D

SO YES! NEW MAC PRO!!!! :D

it got some speed bumps... it did NOT get thunderbolt or even USB 3.0. What the heck? Even the graphics cards are old.

sigh. writing is on the wall. RIP

AT LEAST THUNDER BOLT PRODUCTS WILL BECOME SEMI AFFORDABLE NOW!!!!!!! ITS ABOUT TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i still love my late 2011 mbpro 15 inch 2.2 ghz quad core 3.0 with hyper threading. The only thing i honestly wish i had was usb 3.0 thats it.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Apple is contributing to the high tax but I'm also sure the government is the one who is taking the majority of it. The government knows that these are hot items and tax the hell out of them, knowing that people will still purchase them.

It's a damn shame!!!

As if expensive weren't bad enough for the MBP, lack of upgradability is truly WTF.

Kind of liked the option of keeping the optical drive so you could run a 256 SSD + 1TB HDD and have ludicrous storage for a non-ludicrous price.

Retina display is great but precious little support, and losing the optical drive is fine, but to have so, so few BTO options is just ridiculous.

Only problem is the New MacBook 15.4 is a separate product. They are still selling the 13/15inch models they currently have with just an IVY update. Not the new ports.....

Very glad I didnt sell my early 2011 13" MBP... Looks like it's a keeper for another year...
