i have had 2 glossy MBP's and tbh they are so bright i can drown out any ambient light reflection.

My Panasonic Vierra is Glossy also on the wall in my front room.

Seriously Anti-glare is so 2002. If you really want it you can always get the old style mbp

If you like it, then that's fine, enjoy. But don't go around decrying other peoples' preferences which are equally valid.

Here's a pic of the brand new retina mbp display. I personally find this *absolutely* unacceptable. If you don't see a problem with this, then that's fine for you, but it isn't fine for many other people.

Is the SSD like normal sata SSDs or the special macbook air mSata form factor that costs a ton even from 3rd parties?

Standard MBP uses normal 2.5" size SSD's you can get them for good money now. 240gb Sandforce drives are very good on Macs. Also the RAM is simple to upgrade. Save a fortune.

This is how i did it.

is there a battery charge indicator like on the previous models, or is it gone?

I did not see it on the other images. Would actually miss this feature.

So i guess you have never heard of thepiratebay.org

Who watches Blu rays on a notebook anyway? seriously.

Obviously you don't fly ANYWHERE? Why would I buy a DVD to use only on my laptop when I already own the Blu-Ray for home use? Wouldn't it be great to take the movie with me?

Also haven't you heard of Netflix?

If apple supported HD Audio passthru via Headphones, you would have a superior movie experience to what's offered in-flight! Period!

What brightness is that screen set at? you don't know do you... exactly.

Im typing this on my MBP now with glossy hi-res display. behind me are 5 LED spot lights in the kitchen. they don't affect me at all.

The reason you can't have a retina antiglare is because the screen thickness of the new MBP wouldn't allow it. Watch the video and you will see the issues. the glass of the screen is now part of the lid rather than separate.

Any word on when the new RD MBP will be available in stores? For past MBP new releases, how long does it usually take for the laptop to reach stores?

Great machine. What's crazy is that it's *cheaper* than the standard mbp upgraded to 8 gb ram and a same-size ssd. Plus this has the retina and more gpu ram. Kinda funny that they're still selling the older style as this is clearly the future (they pretty much said so). I guess prices have to come down so they can get this one in at the old price points before they kill the old style.

I do wonder how much worse gaming will be at native res than on the standard mbp. Quite a but, I'd think. But I guess you can always set the res lower on this machine if need be.

Amazed that they got the battery life to be equal. Just think how much the older style mbp would have if it had the battery capacity of this new one.

If your that bothered get some 5.1 surround headphones with a USB connector.

Ever heard of Triple Play? i have 2 Blu rays that came with 1x bluray 1x dvd and 1x digital copy. All for £15 all in.

I don't see the problem. There is a MBP with a DVD drive, get that one

Speak for yourself.

A lot of people need far more than that.

You're only going to use a lot if you do video editing. Aren't desktops meant for that? Laptops had 80GB hard drives until a few years ago.

And even if you are editing video on your laptop, you should use an external hard drive. You're not supposed to edit video on your bootup disk.

Get the 2.6 ghz non-retina with a 256 SSD (OS, applications) and replace the optical bay yourself with + 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD.

Haven't watched the keynote yet for the design difference. First glance though, the price premium for the retina + SLOWER processor is one thing, but the lack of upgradability/BTO options is just ridiculous.

I agree. I got 16gb of ram in my 2011 15" for $130. And I have a 750gb HDD in my computer already. I reckon I'm going optibay for sure after this update.

LOL --- You don't "See" the problem... apparently you need glasses and hearing aids!

DVD??? Great suggestion! Because DVD is the EXACT same quality as Blu-Ray.. Ya OK!

And BTW 5.1 surround headphones is not equal to DTS-HD/TrueHD passthru... '

If you're going to argue... at least stick to the facts!

I absolutely agree with you. I sold my 2010 MB PRO for a old 2008 one just because of the crappy Glossy screen. Sure I could buy the 2011 with matte option, but with that 45W processors no thanks.

If it is that glossy and there is no matte option, forget it already.

I am sorry to say that, but... This sucks! :(
No ability to upgrade the RAM and storage!
I could expect it from Macbook Air, but not from a "Pro" machine.

Okay, lets chill out and launch our sweet comparison tool at :apple:.com.

Everyone needs to stop worrying about this. They have reworked the entire process that they use to manufacture the screen into the unibody, just as they did when they started bonding the display to the glass with the iPhone 4.

This stuff is literally bleeding edge, give it some time and I wouldn't be surprised to see a matte version of this display, just like it took time the first time around. People doubted it then, too, citing that the glass piece is needed for the structural integrity of the screen assembly. Not the case then, probably not the case now.

Wait it out.

Resolution posted here is wrong

Not sure if this has been mentioned (beaten to death), but the resolution listed here is wrong.
It is 2880x1800, not 2880x1880.

Stop spewing this crap before you know the facts. The SSD is upgradeable just as it is in the MacBook Air. And, you cannot compare "750GB" with "250GB" as one refers to SSD over traditional storage media. So much faster.

Who cares.

In 2 years ill just upgrade to the next "new MBP" and put 16gb and 1tb of SSD in then. probably work out cheaper than upgrading anyway after i sell the old one.

Okay, the point about non-upgradable storage is thrown out.
Still, there are other 4 points which cannot be ignored.

Honestly i don't see the point of blu-ray. I download all my 1080p movies and watch them. Haven't even used my optical drive yet after 1.5 years of owning my MBP

I find this comment funny, revealing and depressing, because it reinforced everything I dislike about Apple's direction in the last few years.

The original poster doesn’t want Blu Ray so he can watch movies! He wants Blu Ray because he's probably a creative professional who uses Blu Ray to store past graphic design projects, or create video discs for clients or backup photos from a photo shoot.

My point is that Apple is increasingly abandoning core professionals in favor of consumers who are only interested in chatting and posting to Facebook.

Everyone and their grandmother knows its Intel.

But Apple would like everyone to believe that its their own creation... just like their 'resolutionary retina display'

Too bad none of you have ever given credit to samsung.

So fair criticism to Apple for completely FAILING at thunderbolts execution.

Apple isn't really taking credit for these things. They're just advertising that their products have this hardware like how they advertised the speed of the Motorola processors and later the Intel processors. Apple did not invent any of this hardware, but they put it all together very well.

It's like saying "Our pizza comes with a free 2 liter Pepsi bottle."
