How does the A14 compare to the A12Z from the iPad Pros?
It’s more powerful than the pro. Considering how the A13 beat the 12Z in single core, this one should beat the multi-core benchmark as well. The only bottleneck would be available ram.

So Pro = Face ID, LIDAR (who uses that), quad speakers and 120Hz screen? The Air is priced right, so I think Apple just cannibalised their own product line - that is, unless iPad Pro becomes the next gen MacBook ARM.

iPad vs iPad Air physical differences.

Who will notice this?

Standard iPad = last year’s specs for cheaper. That’s all. “Air” has no meaning.

Very interested to see how the A14 compares to my 2018 11” chip. Poor saps who bought the refreshed 11” must be upset.

My grandmother has been bugging me to update her 3rd gen Air and I‘m glad I held firm so I can get her the basic model with updated A12 chip.

I am one of these iPP 2020 owners, sad to have a 2018 chip indeed.

What does your grandma do which Air 3 was not enough for?

Won't know about RAM until someone does a teardown, but my guess would be 4 GB on the Air, and still 3 GB on the base iPad. Yes the Pro still have a few upgrades, but most people probably won't see those upgrades as worth $300 compared to the Air.
You mean $200 dollars.

So far, the new Air has two of my three wants: Apple Pencil 2 and more storage.

Hope the Air has more RAM. If so, sold! I’d pick up a 256gb WiFi model. So my biggest question would then be Green or Rose Gold?

Disapointed and I'll tell you why. First...nitpicking, but NO PRODUCT RED? WTF APPLE...10 years I wanted a Red iPad and you cant give me that? The Watch is red now...why not the Air? Also..600 bucks is 100 dollars more then the last one, and you coulden't give us starting 128 gigs? ARE YOU SERIOUS... Id might have swallowed the 100 dollar price increase if you started at 128 gig, but 64 gigs just doesn't cut it on a product over 500 dollars now!

I get alot of people saying why get an 11 inch pro, and i agree to an extent, but at that point i rather just save up, get a 12.9 inch pro with 120HZ screen, face ID, better processor and better camera (not that id ever use it) or just wait till next year when they refresh the pro line...because you know they are going to do it now that the air will canalbize the 11 inch pro line, so the way i figure it, wait the 6 months till they refresh the pro!

But thats just me!

I'd much rather have an $899 MBA that's infinitely more compatible and capable than a ****** walled garden iOS device for the same price

That's an interesting observation. If we assume Geekbench scores are comparable across CPU architectures, entry 2020 Air is 1000/1986 and 12.9" iPad Pro is 1118/4631. That's quite a significant difference in multi-threading performance. Does that translate into iPad being "more responsive" than Air? Which is a better computing experience, walled garden concerns aside.

Does that mean that iPhone 12 will also get the new Touch ID power button?

Now that I think about it, Touch ID power button on iPhone is less practical since most iPhones go into Apple cases that cover the button.

I certainly hope so. They could do an apple case that exposes the power button I bet.

When can we preorder the new Air? Still using my original 9.7 pro which has started to show its age in the last year. But IOS14 beta has definitely made it feel "snappier", still want to upgrade but the apple store won't let me preorder! Cmon Apple, TAKE MY MONEY!

On compute power, raw power the A14 is better and more efficient...but in gpu, and here the ipad pro wins, and in general big screens needs more gpu than cpu
Thats why the pro will get A14X...and the pro macs will get custom apple gpu

Question for folks, since I haven't really paid much attention to iPad line. Given iPad, iPad Air, iPad Pro - what's the best keyboard case or attachment to get as close as possible to "laptop replacement"? We have a 2017 Pro and haven't really played with that.

I mean it’s okay but quite expensive for an Air. Might as well go all the way tk the pro then.

The new Air starts at 599$, the Pro 11” at 799$. So for people who do not care about ProMotion, quad-speakers and FaceID it is still a very good mid-range offering, IMO. The saved 200$ can then be put towards covers, pencils, magic keyboards and what not. 😉
