How will this affect the old Keychain Access?

(also - UI is terrible on the computer. Too much padding. Obviously designed for iPad/iPhone and then made available for Mac with minimum changes)

Absolutely agree on the UI interface!

Using these phone/tablet ports on a computer makes me feel like I am using a program written for a two-year old.

Important question. Does this new password app forcibly sync to the cloud or do you have an option to keep ALL passwords on a device ONLY?

This is great - particularly for people who aren't super familiar with password management. Making it easier to do so is great. Does this handle 2FA? That would be a nice addition.

I'm still sticking with Bitwarden but this is a welcome change.

What about Watchtower things like easily see if you've used the same password multiple times, easily see items that have bad security, see items where the website has been hacked, see which items can be upgraded to add 2FA or Passkeys, etc?

Or how about organizing things into multiple vaults?

Item history?

Archived items?

Apple Passwords seem like a good start and definitely great for the general public, but to me I wouldn't want to lose those things I listed above, plus I don't want to put all my eggs in the same basket (with Apple, that is). Seems like a really bad thing to do, security wise.

Passwords on Sonoma already has a Watchtower type thing. Passwords you've created for sites that support OTP have the option to set one up if you haven't already done so. As for vaults, you can create shared groups that might offer similar functionality. Just create a group and don't share it with anyone if you don't want to. It doesn't appear you can archive items or view history.

I'm not saying Passwords will be for everyone but was simply highlighting that a lot of the features people are saying are dealbreakers are actually already in the existing Passwords settings in Sonoma, never mind this new Passwords app. Combined with secure notes in the Notes app with get you a good deal of the functionality of something like 1Password and, for me, was all the functionality I needed.

Still no confirmation if this will allow you to store: credit cards, software licenses, important photos (drivers license, passport, etc)? Ideally it's a catch-all repository for secure documents
It is just for passwords, passkeys and verification codes

The one thing that's been missing for me so far is the ability to store 'non-account' things, like passport numbers or software licenses, which you can do on things like 1Password. Does this allow that?
Yeah someone please let us know about this one. I genuinely think I’ll move from 1pwd to save money if this works the same.

even on idevices, the design is not optimal. iOS 1-6 used to be so information dense. Now that's thrown out of the window and information density is getting worse by the year. That is the part I dislike about Android, and Apple is moving closer to them on this front.

While the password app looks good. There are still things that 1Password can do, that the password app cannot. Storing credit card details, secure notes, software licenses. It will be interesting to see if Apple adds these features to their password app over time.

If I could get the features I have now with 1Password with Apple's password app, then it would be tempting for me to cancel my yearly subscription with 1Password. Saying that though it only costs £30.99 for the year so it's not exactly expensive.

Anyway my subscription is due early July, so I will see how Apple's password app has matured by this time next year and see if I want to cancel 1Password.

Any word on Family Sharing of passwords? One of the main things that's kept me on 1Password has been the ease with which I can run a shared password vault with family -- while each person also gets their own private vaults. If Apple is folding this into Family Sharing, would make it possible to use as a replacement.

Why do people talk like this?

1Password is a phenomenal piece of software and a good company
I think it’s because they used to sell a standalone version that did not have cloud sync, and people used to use Dropbox to sync it. Then they switched to cloud only, and dropped the standalone. And that meant a monthly fee, and trusting their sync.

To be honest tho, of all things, I’m willing to pay a bit for a password manager to be done right, considering how critical it is.

However, the other problem is they used to be all in on developing for apple first and making beautiful, native apps. Now it’s just a bloated web browser wrapped in an app, like so many other apps.

I still trust their security, they’ve done a great job with that. And their team is very responsive on their forums. I reported a bug and it was fixed right quick.

But I do disagree with their decision to bloat the app.

The alternative explanation here is that all efficient solutions are essentially the same—e.g., why wheels are round—and 1Password wasn't bringing anything of value that couldn't be easily replicated by a summer intern.
The UI is simple. But security is deceptively hard. That’s why LastPass has been hacked so many times.

But yeah, there are solid alternatives, like Bitwarden (which is open source, so you can look at the code and see if they’ve made mistakes).

Would be even better if a company made a highly encrypted archive file of your passwords you can sync using iCloud. Instead they want to upload it to someone else's servers and we are all just supposed to trust that the info is safe and never seen by anyone else.
