Managed to place an order on the phone for March 16th delivery. I tried a couple of times as a personal user and it just said they were too busy, then said I was an Educational user (which technically I am as I work for a University) and then it put me in a queue. Just managed to get through as their systems came back up.

I'm ordering one right away. Still have my first gen. But when the next iPad (4) is released in a year, what will they call the new iPad? The old new pad???

Got one!

Initially got as far as "Choose Your iPad" back when it first went online about an hour ago... kept timing out; but persistence worked. I kept reloading the previous pages; slowly but surely got to the checkout page. 16GB Wi-Fi, Delivery March 16 :D

Yes, what they announced is nice, but I think it's missing:
-a better front camera (after all, it's a shame to have such a high definition screen and still see people "blurry" when you talk ipad to ipad).
-Siri
-And just "something" to make it stand out, to make it exciting, to make it a must have...
(and why not 299$ for the ipad 2? They would have eliminated all competition. A refurbished one should be 349$, though, but still..)

Siri and Front Camera are, I suspect, linked by bandwidth constraints / availability. Siri after all needs a constant internet connection to process queries which you can't always guarantee on an iPad and which would cause non-technical users confusion when it doesn't work thanks to user error. The front camera is a bit different but my pet theory is two-fold: 1) You have to feed these images to an iPhone so HD isnt really needed for that and would eat up bandwidth if fed between iPad's on cellular networks (and therefore may not work as well in marginal signal areas) and 2) There may simply not be enough room in the case, doesn't the logic board sit behind the front camera?

The exciting feature is, frankly, the Retina display. Remember what happened when the iPhone 4 came out, the instant people saw it alongside any other device it blew them all away.

As for the iPad 2 I suspect Apple just don't need to set that low a price point. Remember they will still have refurb iPad's available at lower prices than $399 and once you've gone down to that point it makes it much harder to come back up if you need to. Also if Apple are thinking about a 7" device they need that price space to slot it in between the iPod Touch and the iPad.

The display seems to be fabulous and I would love more RAM as my iPad 1 is so slow. But if the German store continues to be down I will just keep my money. It can't be a major surprise for Apple that one or two people may be visiting the store today...

What do you call a Macbook Air from two years ago? What do they call this year's model? You identify it by how long ago you bought it, typically. So "I have a two-year old Macbook" and "I have a two-year old iPad" will be the identifying remarks.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.7; en-us; SGH-T959V Build/GINGERBREAD) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

So Apple promises more saturated colors. Oh oh, What are all the loyalist who hate the saturated colors of superamoled gonna say now. Windows 8 tablets this year will be the ones to offer a real full OS experience. It's not even close. But I'm sure a lot of kids will still want one. Leave the real tablets for the adults.

It's amusing to see Timzer posting every once in a while, trying to diss this update. What an ass this troll is.

This was a very significant updating of the iPad, period. When another tablet manufacturer is able to close the gap with Apple, wake me for Timzers comments.

Big tip for ordering online

I'm gonna give you guys a big tip (more like a lead), but don't hate if it doesn't work for you. A friend of mine already had success with this.

To order a white 16GB Wi-Fi only, keep trying this link
http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MD328LL/A

For other units, I suppose substituting the "MD328LL" part with the respective code (which I have no idea of) could work.

Persistence is key. Keep reloading. When the server gets a small break, it will let you go to the next step. When you get to the next step, copy that hyperlink. It may timeout again with future steps, but repeat this process until you pay.

Good luck

No pick up at stores

No local apple stores on my list show availability for pickup. Sucks because I live near NH where its tax free!!

Just got through on the phone... tip.

When it asks what product you want say iPhone. everytime I said iPad it said sorry and hung up... I said iPhone... held for 10 minutes and got it.

Here's the direct link to the order page. Save a couple of page loads:

http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipad/family/ipad/select_ipad

I've gotten far enough to select the model and specifications, but no "add to cart" button. Reload and get:

Http/1.1 Service Unavailable

Sigh.

The good news is all models still showed "delivers March 16."

Thanks, I'm on the "processing" screen, been on it for 10 minutes. Still haven't got a confirmation email, but the charge is on my debit card. So basically I'm in the door, right, right!? Lol, sorry... I'm on edge here :)

Thanks for the link anyway.

Edit: Just got the email! Good luck everyone, I think I just cut 5 years off of my life :p

Got it!

Was able to get through with the EPP site. Even saved me a few bucks. Used some gift cards up... 64 GB Verizon for $500. I'm happy!!

According to him, the ugly, over-done, far too colorful, confusing Windows 8 already has beat Apple, and it's not even out yet.

What's funny is that if he honestly felt that Windows 8 had a chance in hell, he'd feel no need to post this nonsense before the product has even been released. He just can't stand to see other people celebrate today's amazing reveal, and he knows deep down that Windows am doomed, but he needs to convince himself otherwise.

Fanboys, come on...

Down rating my last post for wishing a 3.1 million pixel iPad, with 5 million pixel back camera, had at least a 1 million pixel front facing camera.

Go suck on a railroad spike.

VGA is ludicrous in 2012.

iPod will just be "iPod," iPhone will just be "iPhone, and iPad will now just be "iPad" - watch when iPhone 5 comes out - I bet it'll just be "iPhone"
---------
...otherwise, the iPhone 11 will sound pretty stupid...

That sounds plausible. iMacs are like that, identified with an "internal" revision number. Plus, the new (pun intented!) way of naming would easily allow publishing future iPads in various sizes. I wonder when "The new" will be dropped off, at least at the day iPad 2 will finally be out of production.

And crying about downvotes is Kindergarten-level stuff.
