Came here to write the exact same thing. Definitely felt like the first deviation away from Jobs vision for the company. Disappointing.

Apple has “recently” taken a nose dive in all kinds of ways... every single month since 1984. It’s been on a perpetual race towards ever-worse products, ever-tackier advertising, and ever-more-evil decisions. The glory days are always just starting to end, with a dark future ahead. That has been true for 30 years and will be true for the next 30 as well.

One thing IS new, though: now we can complain about and exaggerate the same things we always would have, but instead of blaming it on Steve Jobs, we can blame it on Steve Jobs’ absence.

(Meanwhile, ironically, Apple fans will always have the reputation for never complaining about Apple, being totally un-picky, and accepting without question every Apple decision and product. Amusingly far from reality!)

Is he trying to be like Michael J Fox? Anyhow, my least favourite ad. Makes Apple users look pretty dumb.

Isn't that Apple's moto "we'll defend to death our ideas" well you were given an idea and then stole it. You're violating Apple's moto.

Give credit where credit is due even if it is a 100 people.

Apple never used "famous" people in their ads until this year or so. Most ads don't have "famous" people in them. It's a waste to use famous people "just because they can afford it".

Yea, completely correct. Except for Jeff Goldblum, Richard Dreyfus, Yao Ming, Vern Troyer, Yo Yo Ma, Tony Hawk, Will Ferrell, Eminem, U2, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Coldplay, and I'm sure at least a handful more that don't come to mid at the moment. I'm not even counting Justin Long or John Hodgman because they weren't well known names until after those commercials. Hodgman may have been on the Daily Show beforehand though. ;)

Worst Apple ads ever!

The man crush that people here have with Steve Jobs is very creepy.

And how about when the iPod was announced. And so many b**ched about Apple giving us "another MP3 player" and how other MP3 players were less expensive and had better specs. And Apple is making a mistake getting into this market. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/apples-new-thing-ipod.500/

And let's take a trip through this thread when the unibody McBooks were announced. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/580680/
People complained left and right about how ugly the machines were (epically the black keyboard) how no matte screen option was a deal breaker, too expensive. Blah blah blah. This again happened on Steve's watch.

And of course the cube and MobileMe happened on his watch, as did Ping and Lion and the antenna issues with the iPhone 4 as well as the delay of the white iPhone. If any of this had happened with Steve not around the same people here would've been complaining and blaming it on thr absence of Steve.

Eh, the shuffle was the only thing on that list that I didn't care for. Those were pretty revolutionary products at the time. I still have my clamshell iBook. Thing was mind-blowing at the time. Obviously that's just my 2 cents. And that Nano was my favorite Nano that Apple has released.

Highly annoying ads. And – yikes – trying to use an Apple product? You better have a genius at hand!

People seem to either like these ads or hate them, for different reasons.

I think these ads are brilliant. Simple, entertaining, catchy. They are not about the products, but about the Genius support that's available "when you need it". That's what they are selling here. Good ads.

As a Mac user, these ads made me feel like a massive douche.

Then you've got self-esteem issues. Don't worry about what others _might_ think of you.

I fly every week for work. If I saw some kid running around the plane, jumping into people's seats and such, I'd sit back and watch the flight attendant tell him to stop and buckle up or he would be taken off the plane.

Right, let me help you out here.

It's a commercial, not life. The kid is an actor and he doesn't really live in his blue t-shirt.

Aside from being stupid, these commercials are pretty arrogant. They make Mac users look like they are helpless. Can't apply a sepia filter? Really. Lol.

The ad is not aimed at Mac users ....

Whatevs. I don't use OS X anymore so I don't really care.

Yup, classic case.

You're seeking to convince yourself that you made the right decision to leave the platform; that's why you're still here, looking longingly over the fence.

ads

I am a very critical person when it comes to watching commercials but I thought these new ads were great. The one with the guy having a baby was a bit off for me, but the other two were done well. They are simple, don't hit you over the head with the product and are new/fresh. It's nice to see Apple willing to try something different and not churn out the same spots. The lead actor was very compelling too, he seemed like a real Apple genius and represented the company in a good light.

@nagromme - I'm confused. Aren't you a die-hard Apple fan? Am I reading a negative perspective here? :eek:

Maybe I'm thinking of someone else.

Embarrassingly bad

Those ads are are seriously cringe-worthy. The one on the airplane is hilarious because an Apple Genius does NOT do your iMovie or any other creative project for you or with you. Doesn't happen. Definitely un-Steve like for sure.

@nagromme this has to be the comment of the year and gets the "WTF" for its sheer "are you kidding me?" content. Wake up on the wrong side of the bed today?

So what you're saying is, that if, in some alternate reality,

I was on a flight
and I needed to make an iMovie,
and there was an Apple Genius on board.

He wouldn't be able to help me?

Fast forward to today and people are complaining that Apple is becoming an "iToy" company , same old story from 11 years ago it seems. But as for the commercial marketing...it's different to say a commercial is misguided than a product. People laughed at iPods as Apple losing sight of their vision and iPods changed the world...but a bad commercial is a bad commercial.
No I understand that, but the constant theme of Apple's going downhill because Steve is no longer around is annoying. It's not like every single commercial they released when Steve was alive was awesome, or everyone after is terrible. Same thing with products. I still get this feeling of resentment by some long time Apple users towards those who are maybe new to Apple or resentment towards Apple catering to the products that drive the majority of their revenues and profits. So we get complaints about the focus on so-called iToys and the lack of focus on things like MacPro. Yet it was under Steve Jobs leadership that Apple became one of the most successful companies in the world, with their iToys. If there was no iPod/iPhone/iPad where would Apple be right now?
