I think the big thing that is being missed here is that you will be able to stream content direct from an iOS device to the AppleTV. That's huge.

I've been holding off on buying an AppleTV until there was Netflix integration - and now that it's only $99, I'm definitely getting one!

Still... it's a shame to see there's no iOs on there. Would have been awesome to see some games pop up on the device. Don't have any other game console, and I hate playing games on my computer, so that would have been quite nice. Steve says people don't want their TV to be a computer...well, fine. I don't want to use MS Office or do other work on my TV, that's true... but for GAMES? Seems perfect for the living room.

Oh well...opportunity missed...

Once again, apple screws it's international customers.

Can someone tell me how $99 USD translates to £99 GBP.

NO.

Yes.

First of all VAT is within the price in the UK. The US price is 99 + sales tax (8.25% here).

There are also significant import duties paid both to UK and EU.

Apple released a table of this a while ago, or some tech site did. The difference is primarily taxation.

I'm a Brit living in Texas, so I've had both sides. One of the good things being here is getting the Apple products first time around and the relative cheapness.

Thanks for posting this.

This product isn't compelling at all.

Other boxes have amazon, netflix, hili, etc integrated.

Not to mention the codecs apple is missing is a huge issue.

This will no doubt be a hobby product again.

What no facebook integration?

My tv has that

So tell me again, how the Apple TV can compete with the WD TV HD Live Plus and other devices?

Why does Apple come out with a great design, superb UI, but ruin the functionality?

If the new AppleTV had run iOS and had apps- particularly games- that you could play/run on the big screen, it would have been an instant buy for me even at a 50% higher price. But as it is, this really doesn't do THAT much more than the original AppleTV that I sold a while back did and still does MUCH less than my NetTop does- so I'm highly unlikely to pick one up. Streaming from the computer will likely still be a pain in the ass because it will likely have to stream from iTunes like the previous one did and you'll have to convert everything you want to stream over to its own format.

Also, no word on whether they'll FINALLY allow you to make video playlists that will play continuously instead of dumping you out after each video.

Now, for those without any current means to watch things from their computer or the internet on their computer? I'd say this is probably worth the $99. But for me, it would just sit and gather dust next to my already heavily-used AcerRevo NetTop....

:(

I hate the design...

Although my current apple TV look a little bit outdated, they have way nicer design.

Aside the design, I don't think the current appleTV will be updated. I theink they have different chips...

If they keep the purchases in the old ATV, they might be able to bring it back in the new one through SW update... Just make sure your iTune is running on the computer (like now) and the purchase will be downloaded through you itunes on the cpu..

Hate that they remove purchase...

Once again someone doesn't understand their own taxation laws...

Yes, we understand out taxation.

With the 17.5% VAT removed that makes it £84.25.

At the current exchange rate £84.25 translates to $129.41 so we are being ripped off to the tune of $30.41 - nearly one third the US price again.

Very Disappointed

I was ready to run out and buy one of these but Apple failed by not adding Hulu Plus to this new unit. My PS3 has Netflix, Hulu, and can stream from my iMac. Not wanting to buy another PS3 or bluray player for the bedroom I was really anticipating this feature.

Unless Hulu is coming down the line, Apple really disappointed me on this one.

So tell me again, how the Apple TV can compete with the WD TV HD Live Plus and other devices?
Without the ecosystem to get your content to the device, WD is nothing more then a digital video player; Whereas Apple TV is a complete solution. Apple TV has always been very good for buying/renting content via iTunes. The issue was the cost of TV shows.

If you want to download TV shows on your own, then AppleTV is not the product you are looking for.

Apple FYI

$99 does NOT equal £99.

So why is Apple TV £99 over in the UK where the current exchange rate makes that $152.

I WILL NOT BE RIPPED OFF. I WILL NOT BE BUYING AN APPLE TV.

I know! And the prices of the other new products are reflected more accurately - its just the aTV??

Answer to my own question

Does anyone know if the software of existing AppleTVs will be updated to reflect today's announced changes to the product?

Just found the answer to my question, actually :

Update: We just got confirmation from Apple that the new Apple TV will be streaming 720p video only (no big surprise there), and that existing Apple TVs won't be getting an upgrade to the new cloud-based software (again, not a shocker).

(via Engadget - http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/apple-announcing-new-apple-tv/)

Big yawn on this one. Definitely needs 1080p and some iOS apps and ability to purchase shows/movies.

Between my Xbox 360, Directv, and apps on my BD player why do I need another box again?

I like the new footprint but I'm disappointed they excluded the composite outputs. My HDMI inputs are already used up on my receiver and I didn't want to use one for the ATV. Plus I like being able to play music or movies without having to boot up the MacBook. I like the looks but I'm taking a pass until mine fails.

No Apps, no deal. Need iPlayer, 4OD, DemandFive, SkyPlayer, and LoveFilm.

Also, $99 does not equal £99. (And yes, even with sales tax added to the US price, it is still not equal).

Will not be buying, at least until there's an update supporting Apps.

How do I rent new movies?

When that new realease is on AppleTV for $5 and not on streaming Netflix yet, how does the WD TV let me see it? Do they have their own rental store?

And how well does it play with my iPhoto library and albums?

I see your point for new releases on AppleTV.

As for photos. Yes you can.

You guys think they'll push out the update to the original AppleTV?

Honestly, I don't see anything on the new one that gets me excited over the original. Maybe I'm missing something, but since I don't do Netflix, I don't see what the new UI/OS/whatever it's called has to offer me. I bet I'm missing something, but I'm completely underwhelmed with what I saw today.

Buy a WD TV HD Live Plus and enjoy much more than the Apple TV can currently do.

Ok - almost sold on WD TV HD. Questions: will it take the iTunes organization from your computer (playlists)? Does it have a decent screensaver? (For that matter, does the new Apple TV have a better screensaver, like the PS3? Or did it retain just the boring photos thing?)

Underwhelmed

Way less than i thought it was gonna be. I understand people not wanting a full computer experience on the TV. Im one of them. But what about apps like Hulu, Pandora and skype? Ummmm.....yea. Where the heck is an appletv app store? All i have to say is they better allow this Airplay feature to be able to be used by developers in their apps. For instance let me stream pandora from my iPad to my TV so I can user my mega home theater system. Let me stream the ABC app from my iPad to it as well. If they only allow this feature to be used by them alone and not developers im gonna be pissed.

You forgot import duty.

If you look on the UK iTunes store you will see they have now added "Includes £XX VAT, duty and levies.*"on many products, unfortunately not on Apple TV.

Wd

I own this device . What a piece of junk? Sure it does 1080 but the quality is poor. Setting it up is a pain, Try going to a point in a movie you need to fastword. Doesn't remember where you left off in a movie you watched a few days ago. No slick at all What a waste of $149 .. I'll give the Apple TV a shot. 720 or 1080 don't care . I do care bout smooth streaming and working easily.
