Seems to be happening on my iPhone 13 Mini too after the iOS 16 RC. It freezes and becomes unresponsive for around 10-30 seconds and then becomes okay. Not sure if related.
I'm also seeing this on my iPhone 12 Pro, but not related to these backups: it just freezes completely. I've needed to force restart twice now.

:(

That is quite a bad bug.

Like I said, let the real beta testing begins. 😅
Maybe it's a good thing I'm in a country with late releases of Apple products. First launch countries can deal with the bugs first. 😁

First that’s an excuse….second Apple has chosen to make things complicated. Hell iTunes was using mostly legacy code till a couple years ago…..20 years later.
I expect better from apple and when people just let stuff go and make excuses enables them to continue this garbage.
So, what if the iTunes code base is 20 years old. Have you looked into OS X? Thats 34 years old. Other code bases like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Microsoft Word go back decades.

Oh please. I've probably been working with computers for more years than you've been alive.
I'm 62 and I've been working with computers since 1974, yes, in high school...
I know exactly what I am talking about.
No, you don't. That statement about wireless being better than a wired connection is absolutely false, in every way.

But believe what you want - I have no need to argue with some random stranger on this forum.
Neither do I but I will point out falsehoods.

Set my space black 1tb pro up as new this year with all the differences I decided not to bring over the back up from my 13 pro which been going for quite a few years, takes ages but it’s nice and satisfying to know that everything is as new. And I got rid of all contacts got rid of some old apps just didn’t install them anymore so I didn’t need them is it at work clearing rubbish out. I have to say it does take a long time but it is my preferred way of setting up a new phone. I also did the update on my Mac first before I started downloading the apps and changing settings and then adding my photos and music and books from my Mac.

The BEST way? That'd be to complete an encrypted backup of your 13 Pro to your computer via Finder, and then restoring your 14 Pro from that backup. It is by far the longest process for data transfer, but in the long run, it helps significantly cut down on the time you spend re-logging into apps, re-syncing data to apps, etc. on your 14 Pro.

It doesn't take much longer if you are automatically backing up and syncing devices to your Mac continuously.

Seriously just shut it already. Software Engineers have been working remotely collaborating from different locations around the globe for decades now. This mess has nothing at all to do with wether they’re congregating in an office. And for that matter I can’t tell you how often I’ve had to intervene when engineers in cubicles adjacent to each other would initiate and maintain ridiculous email wars!!! Being in the same office only has bearing in very limited circumstances or when dealing with clients specifically.

And even that culture is changing. Welcome to 2022.
Software engineers have been working remotely for decades, yes. But those were a few elite software engineers who were disciplined enough that their employers allowed them to work from home. Covid let every software engineer work from home without proving that they could.

Clearly, it's an entirely different scenario. A few disciplined elite software engineers working from home vs every single software engineer working from home.

Also, it's not just software engineers who make software. Product Management, test engineers, UI/UX designers, and data scientists all contribute to a modern software development team. They're "working" from home too. This is especially hard for product managers because they need to have good communication which the office provides.

Same here on Friday last week here in Oz. I left it for a few hours while doing work in the yard, then eventually did a long power off to get it to restart.
Has been great ever since.

I have you beat by a bit. Since 66 in college. So everything is much more complex now. More apps, more kinds of hardware and software. And many differences in the people using them. So testing/simulating all that gets to be difficult. The result is that things can go wrong. As long as there is a recovery path, it will work out.

There's nothing inherently wrong with software that has a long history, but I wouldn't really hold up Photoshop or Word as examples of why an old code base isn't a problem. I'm not saying that their old code base is the reason for what's wrong with them, but just because they're extremely widely used doesn't mean they're exemplary software.

I'm particularly thinking of Adobe Acrobat, which is nearly 30 years old and I would bet has chunks of code in it that's been around for about that long, yet after 30 years of development and untold millions of dollars in sales, it still absolutely sucks.

I did not do a transfer using iCloud. I do not use iCloud. I restored from a local backup in iTunes, an iPhone backup that I’ve literally been maintaining since 2007. Thankfully everything seems to be okay on my 14 Pro Max as far as I can tell a day and a half in.

People here like to constantly talk smack about me still using iTunes for updates instead of OTA, and backups instead of iCloud; because “eeewwww that uses wires” and “that’s old!” But it’s increasingly proving itself to be the more reliable method of device management. Idk, keep enjoying the paid less secure/less functional alternative i guess.
I use both - to Mac and iCloud.

In the finder window, make sure back up to this mac is off, turn on encryption, then turn backup to this mac on again - you’ll be requested to create a password when you turn in encryption - don’t lose it! It takes a while over usb but good to have that complete backup

Well, at least they are "aware" and "investigating" the issue. I'd expect Apple to just say "you're upgrading it wrong."

More notes for Apple to make iOS its own recovery mode where it can update to the latest iOS before booting up (like macOS). The fact that they need a day one patch is a wake up call.

I didn’t have this problem but couldn’t restore from back up or transfer from my 128gb 12 Pro to my 256gb 14 Pro because apparently there wasn’t enough space on the new 14 Pro. Tried numerous times including restoring from a backup on my Mac.

Contacted Apple support and they had no advice. Said they’d look at advice documentation and get back to me. That was a couple of days ago.

Had the same issue here. Even having plenty of space at the new one, after deleting random apps it worked out… weird

Having issues with the AirPod now when using as hearing aid device. It completely freezes the iPhone until I disconnect the AirPods. Same issue with3 different airpods. Really need this to work

So everything is much more complex now.
That it is! When I started my current job we had token ring-10Mb and twinax. Now I have the T/R cat-2 wires with ethernet baluns feeding anything in the mill at 10Mb, 100Mb ethernet, 1Gb, and 2 Wifi6 access points, and a AC older access point that only I use.
And many differences in the people using them. So testing/simulating all that gets to be difficult. The result is that things can go wrong. As long as there is a recovery path, it will work out.
Hopefully!

And I didn't mean to come off so harsh, sorry. I'm an IT Manager and wired/wireless ethernet has been a big project for me for awhile. I have places I can't get 1Gb wired ethernet to without more budget, and a necessary bandwidth to do all my PC backups, but in a timely manner, and reliably. (plus reliable normal work)

Wifi6 is the first wireless that has truly been good, but even that has the access points a tad on the flakey side, with reboots needed *often*. I use 1Gb ethernet everywhere I can and it's at least twice as fast as our Wifi6, and I rarely have failures with it. That's why I am not so up on Wifi...

We're a manufacturing plant, so have a lot of machinery with electric motors, but they really aren't that close to my Wifi6 AP's, so I don't think that's much of a problem.

Just as an example, a PC with a 1Gb connection feeds the backup in the 1000-3000Mb range (it's compressed data, so it isn't really that fast), and Wifi6 is more in the 600-800Mb range. (same compressed data) True, it could be the wifi adapters on the PC's that aren't fast enough, but still, in all my testing, even if the PC's is right next to a wifi6 Access point that is fed with a 1Gb wire, I haven't been able to get it to go any faster under controlled conditions with different adapters. The backup software we have is a good, controlled, benchmark...

The Apple Watch stuff failed. The iPhone failed to establish a connection with the existing watch and in the end I had to perform a full erase of the watch and set it up again from scratch. Thankfully these devices don't store much and essentially mirror the settings from the iPhone. Still, a pain in the arse to be sure.

I had this same problem with my Apple Watch transferring over to my new iPhone 14. I also had to reset it and restore from a backup.

Well, being that using Apple Maps to locate my daughters house (I'm visiting) right out of the gate after buying my 14 Pro Max, and had no problem (I've used AM a total of 6 times now since getting the phone) would indicate it's not Maps... I've had no problems whatsoever. I feel lucky after reading all these reports
My phone froze three times yesterday and it was incredibly frustrating. Each time, I was using navigation in Apple Maps and trying to drive at the same time. The individual apps were unresponsive, including Settings, Phone, and Maps, and force quitting each of them multiple times had no effect. I have never experienced this on any iPhone going back 15 years. Thought maybe my phone was defective but glad to hear it’s a known issue Apple is investigating. For all those here that said they haven’t had the issue, I wonder if it only presents when using Apple Maps for navigation, as that appears to be what triggered it for me.
Well maybe the step up in GPS accuracy might be snarled up? It’s (iPhone 14) using another band with more power than 1st gen GPS signal.
