Does anyone know Apple's history with new-notebook defects? I mean, is it dangerous to go out and buy one of the first ones off the shelves? I can't picture myself being able to wait more than about three hours after the release.

Well, it seems that Apple don't do a 1:1 conversion like most American manufacturers seem to do (especially software), but of course it's not 1:2 like the £/$ relationship was not so long ago. Actually, currently the pound is quite weak - it's 1:1.7 at the moment.

The model they've got right now - 1099/699 = 1.57. I think that was released at around the time we were at 1:2.

Based on that, if they keep it proportional with the weakening of the pound, I predict somewhere around 1:1.3 this time around, which would make the $799 model £615.

Yeah, that was kinda my thinking with the original £599 I posted. A ton ain't to be sniffed at I suppose. :D

so my question is what will be the difference between mb and mbp?
currently mbp has alu case, multi-trackpad, dedicated gpu, and faster/more storage ofc

if the new mb will have multi-trackpad and alu cases i dont see the meaning in paying 800 bucks just for a dedicated gpu and a little more power

Nah. You'll be ok. I got the first C2D MBP the same day and it was fine. Mostly software problems with new hardware that'll get fixed in a firmware update in a few weeks. No difference really between day 1 and day 20.

In the invite the MB looks kinda thick. Doesn't that go against everything Steve Jobs stands for?

My adc membership expires the 13th, with a hardware discount still available. I've was waiting/hoping there would be a new mbp announcement before it expires, now it's 1 day afterward, harsh ;)

to the person who says " is there a drug that can make you sleep for 5 days'" to you i say freeze yourself in ice and get somone to though you out on the day :):D

My feeling is that in this case the risk is fairly small (unlike, say, the PPC->Intel switch, where I would not have gone near the first model). But still the prudent course would be to wait for the first bleeding-edge user reports and media reviews before purchasing. In fact I can easily see myself buying one of these in the Black Friday sale!

Huh? The invitation obviously doesn't show this. If the leaked images of the case (that appeared yesterday) are to be believed, the new macbooks will be significantly thinner than the previous models. You can pretty much take that as a given anyway. With the exception of the Iphone 3G, Apple typically doesn't make products thicker.

Viewed flat from the top it looks fat?

EDIT: This thread moves pretty goddamn boom fast. While writing my reply 3-4 other users beat me to it. Let's make this thread more popular than the all the "MS airs another commercial"-threads. It deserves it.

I knew it Steven Harper is in league with apple. He got them to put the event on voting day in Canada so no one shows up to vote! damn he's good :p . Don't forget to vote strategically my friends

Do Apple stores have a Black Friday sale?

The iPhone 3G is thicker than the original iPhone. :D

Sorry to be a bastard.

any new leaks yet jw we need to see more of the top and the whole case someone needs to photoshop a image of what it might look like im dying here :(
:apple::apple::apple::apple::apple:

Don't forget you have a year of Applecare in the case of hardware defects. Though it seems there's always something that goes wrong with new releases (remember that vertical striping thing that it took them ages to fix). See, getting the current model isn't so bad - it's probably a good option for those who want to carefully avoid such hassle.

I'm sure it will be fine though. Defects are quite rare, it's just that people shout the loudest about things that go wrong on forums.

More likely would be a quality/corner-cutting issue a bit like the 20" iMac display gradients, which just basically highlights the wisdom of seeing them with your own eyes before buying them, rather than chucking your card into the online ordering system the moment it's announced :)

While you wait, why not have a look at the Apple Store from 2001 :D

Yes but the discounts are really crappy.

The macbook is bigger and heavier then the ibook. I don't know I guess I was expecting narrower and airesque. It doesn't look like it will be so. None the less I am still excited!
