I have a 17" XPS Gen2 and a 17" MBPro, and trust me, if Apple made a 20" it would still be more portable than the 17" XPS.

All the "Mid June", "Early July", "End of summer", "Definately sometime in august", "100% sure mid August", "August 30th is the day!" and similar rumors have kept me hitting macrumors.com at least once a day. Now the wait is over... it feel so strange.
A quick question: Anyone know a drug that will make you sleep for 5 days?
Just take some Valium. You just won't give a damn if you have to wait five days on some scratch for the new gear itch.
Since this has been asked about 15 times now (how dare someone be negative about anthing Apple! The heretic!
- Someone who was hoping for (Some other Apple product) to be updated instead
- Someone who is making assumptions about what is or isn't included (e.g. Firewire)
- Someone who thought they left the event announcement a bit late
- Someone who is rating the thread itself rather than the article (20+ pages of "Finally!" and "Whoop whoop" aren't exactly insightful I guess)
- Someone who hit the wrong button
- Someone who clicked negative just for laughs / to be different
- A PC/Windows fan who happened to be passing by

I'm surprised anybody pays attention to those ratings.
I doubt it will be coupled to anything else. Apple wants to continue to pump up its expanding laptop market share, that's all. Any big new products or other big announcement will come at MWSF.

Oh I am so happy to hear that new notebooks are coming out! I was all set to get a new Macbook when the new ones came out, but unfortunately I have to shell out 1300 bucks for radioiodine therapy for my cat (he has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism). I have waited this long I can wait for my next financial aid check in February... really I can... I hope. Damn lovable cat lol. I still can't wait to play with them at the Apple store!

Snrt. Just shot water out my nose on that one. Yeah, the XPS is um, well how to put this kindly... aw screw it, the thing was beyond pleasingly plump compared to a 17" MBP. Still I considered how many times I absolutely needed to have a hot rod laptop with me and came up with no good answers. I've got the desktops to take care of my work while I'm at home or at the office and that's where I prefer to do serious work. Anything I would need to do on the road could be taken care of decently well with a MB or maybe even my iPhone if I didn't need to push a lot of files to my customers. I'll get by pretty well with a new MB as long as it has one FireWire port. That's the deal breaker for me so if I have to get a MBP to get that one feature, I'll do it but it won't be a 17" jobbie.

....lame i know...but hey, i made myself smile..A Mac Pro weighs over 40lbs. Still conceivable to carry it in a backpack if you weigh at least 130lbs or so.

Nah, I'd bet the switch to Intel was pretty big. Although, admittedly, the membership of MR has grown quite a bit since then. Maybe the announcement of the iPhone - things were still somewhat secretive back then so there was a lot to talk/b!tch about.
My last laptop purchase was in early 2003 -- the first 17" Powerbook. I sit with checkbook in hand, poised to strike.
I know we keep hearing that Apple is going all aluminum on our collective asses, but I can't believe they're going to jettison the plastic models, especially the black ones. Of course, the handwriting is on the wall with the Classic iPods and their silver and black AI models. Apple has shown that they can do black metal. And silver is the new white.
That being said, all I ever here from the TeenBeat crowd is "I want a black Macbook!"

I switched to Apple when the first 12" PowerBook was released in 2003. Prior to that I had used Sony Vaio. Since then I have been waiting for something equally as useful and durable (it has survived fairly heavy usage). The Air was promising except for the graphics and the lack of Firewire.
I remain doubtful that the 12" will make a comeback but something a little bigger screenwise in a lighter case that still has a decent spec and range of I/O ports would be very appealing. Anything smaller would be a delight for carrying around.
Here's hoping.
