I'd go a step further and predict once we get used to the idea of wearing a small device on our wrist again, there will be no going back, and most of the die-hard nay-sayers out there will warm up to, and embrace this coming logical extension of the way we are communicating and using technology in the 21st century.

I agree with your basic premise, but in a few decades we're likely to be wearing tech inside our bodies instead of merely on it. Wearables are still a transitional technology. Something you carry -> something you wear -> something you are. Cyborgs and neural interfaces may sound science fiction today, but smart watches were science fiction too not that long ago.

It's all beginning to take shape. Apple buys Beats to use their advertising techniques for their watch. It'll not be nearly as good as anything on the market but my word if it won't sell in droves once we see hip young celebs strutting around wearing the iWatch.

Then it looks like Apple is on the right track.

Indeed.

The whole point of tech is as a tool to attain social status, which fashion defines.

There's a reason nerds have such low social status compared to high fashion people.

The watch is definitely not going to look like anything that's been seen before. If they're inviting fashion people to the event, they'll have multiple looks, styles, and materials. Fashion people set the bar very high for things like this and Apple is always aware of and good at managing expectations.

I'm hoping for devices that can give you any style you want within the confines of Apple-designed hardware and sensors. I'd just like a plain black band, seamless with the OLED screen and dark when not in use. But I'll happily be surprised if Ive has thought up something better.

Well hopefully I won't be around to see that! That is only going to lead to the breakdown of human society, who can afford the best cyborg upgrades out of choice? No thanks.

Just like Fashion ruined Beats Headphones? Oh wait, Fashion is WHY people buy Beats headphones and not for the quality of its sound.

Evidently Apple knows it's customers well.

So now it's form over function?

Apple really should have held this event in NY if they were going to attract fashion editors in the middle of New York fashion week.

Pulling top fashion editors right in the middle of New York Fashion Week?

HaHAhAhahaha

Apple has plenty of moxy to do exactly that. When Steve was alive, he regularly hit up the Garment District in New York to see what they were coming up with during the 80's and 90's. Many say a lot of Steve's suggestions made it to many a runway.

They are doing it local for security and logistics reasons. This is also why the Mac was launched at the Flint Center; just a few blocks from the Apple campus.

Anyone check out the Apple parking lot this weekend? How crowded is it?

I personally will find it sad if that is what the company becomes.

Dude, it already happened. Apple has one of the most iconic brands. Surprised the new Niner stadium is not "Apple Stadium" instead of "Levi's Stadium."

If you thought Angela was hired to simply run the retail operation...

It's funny, I've only been around here a few years. But I went back the other night and read the thread about the iPod when it came out. There was a lot of "This isn't Apple's space. This will fail. They need to stick to computers." sort of commentary. I think this is a similar moment in Apple's history. Time will tell whether it will have a similar outcome, but I'm going to enjoy watching it pan out.

They missed out on a golden opportunity to schedule this event in NY, though.

There are possibly tens of thousands of media outlets and blogs working fashion week, each leading to thousands more viewers.

Iconic is not the same thing, IMO.

The first time so far as I know Apple has built a building specifically for an event, looks like it may contain a cat walk, top fashion editors invited in the middle of the New York Fashion Week!

I think if you guy's think this is all about, a watch, you may all be proved wrong. Because they have gone to FAR too much effort to simply launch a smart watch and some headphones...

Anyway as i said who knows? But still.. along with all these fashion people they've hired.. wonder if it's wearable tech clothing, I'm sure remember reading a rumour surrounding that?

If Apple was serious about watch fashion they would have gone to Baselworld, invited the editor that go to that event.

Fashion is far more important than tech.

The world of tech if far smaller than the world of fashion.

Yep
Go into any mall today (remember those) and all that's left inside those is 90% fashion. I bet a good percentage of sales on Amazon are fashion. Worldwide on the whole people choose fashion as a priority above gadgets.

Any watch fails bigtime if the user has to open and take off the watch for everyday recharging + putting it back on. Unless it uses velcro

I'm really hoping it doesn't look fugly. But it probably will look chunky and ugly like the rest of the smart watches out there. I feel like smart watches themselves are still in the prototype phase.

To put in another way: how much do you spend per year on clothes? How much do you spend per year on gadgets?

You'll find that the sum total for all people, fashion is bigger.

Attractive clothes are a more basic need for people than gadgets.

It'll be in your lifetime, so brace yourself. Many of the first steps are already accomplished. Now it's just a matter of waiting for computers to get faster and smaller, which they do at a fairly predictable pace.
