It still amazes me that Apple is releasing a gimped product. A product that could easily today have a camera, and usb ports, and multitasking, but doesn't because if they add those features 2 years later, they can make more money. It's pretty sad. A product that easily could have been the device for techies and casuals, but nope. We just get a large iPod with some new apps.

1. Camera for taking photos would have been ridiculous - can you imagine the crowds gathering laughing at a dork who takes photos with a camera ten inch in size?

2. USB ports: Yeah, great. I'll carry my external hard drive with me, that makes it soooo easy to carry the iPad around. The problem is not putting USB ports into the iPad, the problem is how do you use the iPad when there are all kinds of cables hanging off it with all kinds of devices attached? For connecting to other devices, use WiFi. For transmitting/receiving data, use mail.

3. Multitasking: Well, I guess you are better at designing user interfaces than Apple is, so obviously you know better.

The point is that if Apple had wanted to create a netbook, they would have created a netbook. They didn't because they wanted to create something different. If you want to buy a netbook, go ahead and buy one. There are plenty of companies selling them. Apple isn't one of them.

If you think the iPad needs usb ports and a camera, you don't understand what it is or what it will be.

This is a future, not some kludged version of the past and present pretending to be the future. This is actually it.

It is not 2005.

Regretfully thats just a gimmick really. I need a clean, smart periodic table, like chemtouch. Pictures and all that wiki-like info and stories are not for me.

Just need the numbers and symbols!

The Elements features a live connection to the Wolfram | Alpha computational search engine.
It does have numbers and symbols for each one. Either way, have you contacted the devs of chemtouch if they have plans for ipad version?

There's this, and this.

I think you'll find that the reference is to a front-mounted camera - to make Skyping on the couch or similar possible - not a standard rear-facing camera like on phones etc.

1. Video camera. Skype like features become possible. Perfect vehicle for this.

2. Universal port. As Apple provides a stand and keyboard for the Ipad I presume they don't envision you carrying that lot around whilst using it at the same time. "Yeah, great. I'll carry my stand and keybord with me, that makes it soooo easy to carry the iPad around". Duh. Just easy access to large amounts of off-line data. Is that so hard to grasp?

3. That's so obvious I'm not even going to answer that. I'd love to see your response when Apple brings MT to the iPhone OS :p

Ahhh, yes, the netbook argument.

But I do understand that you don't tolerate ANY criticism toward Apple. How dare they!

Funny b/c it amazes me that people that obviously are not interested in the iPad keep foaming at the mouth about supposed shortcoming. It's really sad.

1. Skype eats into iPhone sales. Skype hurts Telcos. So to support Skype in any way, just because YOU like to save a few bucks when calling international, is wrong business. iPad is not for interacting with people - iPhone is.

2. Nobody knows, if the USB-port on iPad Camera Connection Kit will work as standard USB port. But it's there. And you have written all kind of stuff and documents for your proprietary dock connector. So why the hassle to let a handful of engineers just deliver the standard USB environment to iPhone alone. (Btw: May also be a security decision - google 'infected mobile phones' to see the latest.).

3. You read the rumor about Multitasking and Exposé-like App switching? Obviously not...

And though you don't like it - it rocks. But it's just a Rev A, so it's common sense to wait a little. Maybe check back history about Rev A MBP, check how the people buying Rev A iPhones got burned.

It all boils down to this - if you want one NOW, go buy it and have fun. If you want a better and functionally more atractive iPad, wait for Rev B.

Let me be the first to welcome our new iPad overlords.

Ok, maybe that was too nerdy, but I think the 'pad's usefulness will really be for apps designed specifically for it. The large screen is it's single asset, so as long as we see more apps like what have come out so far, then the 'pad should be a solid 1.0 release.

Again I am gonna say it: the iPad is the single most important launch in the history of personal electronic devices...I am gonna buy it, many friends are gonna buy it, even grandma out there is gonna buy it...this thing IS AWESOME even in its version 1.0!

10 million units a year? It's gonna be MUCH MORE than that! Just wait and see...SJ was absolutely right when he said this was the most important development ever - it's finally gonna change our UI paradigms from mouse to finger in a way that has never been achieved before.

GO APPLE!

MS IS DEAD. ALL OTHER COMPETITORS ARE DEAD.

People have been downloading iPad apps for the last couple days.

Is the App store closed right now?

Speaking of Best Buy, it's a good thing I listened to the TUAW podcast last nigh t becuase I was thinking of waiting in front of a Best Buy before I heard that they're only going to be selling iPads at locations with an Apple Solutions Consultant and my location wasn't one that had one.

You can check and www.bestbuy.com/apple and the locations with astericks on them are the ones that will be selling iPads and have ASC's.

The usual ad hominem attack - anyone who corrects your misunderstandings does so because they can't tolerate any criticism. Of course. Nobody could possibly ever correct you because you are wrong, because you never are.

And here is the main point where correction is needed: Does anyone with a sane mind really believe that Apple would intentionally make a product that is -in Apple's opinion- less good than it could be with the intention to make people give up on their first purchase and buy a newer version? Apple is smart. That kind of thinking isn't smart, it is something that idiots who think they are smart would do.

What I would like to know is how strongly the iPad will affect sales of netbooks and laptops. Especially netbooks. People buy netbooks because they don't need a computer that can do everything, but just something for limited tasks (browsing, emails). These are the things that the iPad does better than any netbook, plus things like music, videos, photos, books, which the iPad does better than any netbook can ever dream of. I'd say that 90% of netbook customers would be better off with an iPad. A bit different with laptops and desktop machines; if someone paid $2000 for a MBP then the iPad will likely not be able to do the things that the MBP was bought for.

Ten million iPads would mean about 4.5 million netbooks not sold, 4.5 million previously sold netbooks ending up in a drawer, and maybe a million full laptops not sold. 200,000 of those laptops would be MacBooks / MacBook Pros. Twenty million iPads sold would be _serious_ trouble for Acer.

Ditto for Singapore... It says "A magical and revolutionary product at an unbelievable price" on the apple.com.sg site, but doesn't mention anywhere what the price is... probably at the exchange rate plus about 20% when they finally bring it out!

Yeah probably. I'm going to New York in August, I think I'll just pick one up there :) But there's 4 more months to wait.. But I don't think they will release the iPad before next year here. The first iPhone never made it's way to Aweden either.

There are many good reasons not to have a front facing camera at launch.

One of which would be is the embarassment it would cause when the comms networks would crash when everyone tries skyping each other later this morning.

Not everyone wants a camera - the rest of us will wait.

Plus, the less features it is launched with means the more effort can be spent on making sure the whole experience is up to apple standards.

Did I mention international calls? Did I mention I don't like the iPad? No, but I forgot to mention that Apple, in all its divine wisdom, choose NOT to bring out the iPad in my country now. I'm forced to wait. And that price will be amazing too I bet. Amazingly high, like with all Apple stuff here. And a 'handful' engineers for something mundane as a USB port? Come on....

The what?

I think there's a lot of people with their noses pressed to expensive Apple glass front doors who would disagree with the suggested availability, at this time.

Shout out to everyone in lines! Love your dedication.

My first day as a registered MacRumors member - this is it

Hello everyone, I signed in today cause of iPad and Im on my way to Houston Texas in one week to pick up my darling dear iPad.

...all you out there know that the first time is always a good time so let us who know how to have a gooooood time enjoy it - stop your negative posts and smile a little bit, it gives you so much more...

iPad for life :apple: I know I will have many more than just the one I buy now :D

Nope, you mentioned Skype. That per se is a calling app. So what's the point? Can't admit, that someone has the better argument?

And considering the handful of engineers - there is no Filesystem-metaphor in iPhone OS AFAIK, at least not a user accessible one. Everything is sandboxed. So basically, yes, to write a FS metaphor that mounts an external USB drive is really a hassle. Better use that proprietary 'Mobile Me' stuff, you already have built.

hehe - and you guys are JUST little COUNTRIES! :D

we're a whole bloody CONTINENT with (just about?) more internetz/head than YOU! :p

and we have to wait :(

Latest News (Europe) One man started crying, and another man was slightly bruised on his left arm when the traditional "Running of the iPads" started in iPamplona in Spain Saturday.

He he.

And what continent do you live in ? You forgot to mention. The iPad has already arrived in US, so you don´t have to wait anymore. So it got to be Asia, Africa, Australia, South-America or Antarctica ?

Another question: When will the iPad come to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in eastern Russia ?

Agreed!! That's the best way to look at things. Have a good trip. I know I can't wait to get out here in a couple minutes to get some coffee and wait in line.
:D:apple:

Whilst here in Tokyo..

... No release date - maybe April 24 like everywhere else.

I'd quite like one but to make it truly great it'd have to have a camera for skype, it would have a USB and/or SD card slot. And I agree - they've held off on at least the camera just so that suckers will buy the next revision; that's kind of low if you ask me - especially from a company with $30 billion in the bank.

I doubt it'll be successful in Japan - outside my own home I can count on one hand the places in Tokyo where you can get reliable wifi - in that respect Tokyo is still in the Dark Ages. Therefore, it's going to be an expensive toy unless people go 3G, which I doubt they will in large numbers.

Ah the Spring festival - the pagan celebration of natural rebirth.

What an awesome time to start the future!
