Just pop the top of the 3Gs dock and the 4 + bumper fit fine. I'll cut the top tomorrow so it's got support and put it back on...

I did this same exact thing with the iPhone 4 dock and it works! im cutting the top as well tomorrow.

Take the top off the dock...pops off with a small screwdriver
Cut the well off the white top and replace the top
I-4 with Bumper fits fine and charges perfectly...3G dock also works fine

While that's a great workaround, it'd be nice to have an aesthetically pleasing dock that works for the iPhone 4 + Bumper.

Just picked up a dock tonight and WOW.

Having an invisible shield on the phone and putting it in the dock is a stretch.
They made this dock literally so it can fit the phone and that's it.

Yeah... I'm still wondering what they were smoking when they made this one. I bought one but I'm returning it.

I am thinking about returning mine as well. Bought it online. Hope I can return it at an Apple store. I'd be better off with an Apple USB Power Adapter. Can use that anywhere and with more devices.

I bought a bumper and dock when I got my iPhone 4 last Thursday, and while it just about fits into the dock with the bumper around it, it pushes back really easily. £25 for a dock is bad enough, but when it doesn't even fit properly?

Anyway, I did what Glen suggested and took a screw driver to my 3G/3GS dock. It works perfectly! I even put the rubber bottom over the top, to make it looks a little better and to cushion the phone a bit more.

very nice! I'm still fabricating the front small piece and experimenting with the thickness the phone likes with the bumper. It is about the thickness of a popsicle stick, shown here. I'll try the bottom rubber piece - I like your idea

Has anyone attempted to dremel out their dock to allow the phone with a bumper to fit.

I did this with my 3gs so it fit in the dock with my Incipio feather on.

I just began adding layers of black gorilla tape on mine, after prying off the cover, until it supported the phone. (think it's an original phone cradle. Don't know. Did the 3GS come with cradles?) I refuse to pay apple retail for cradles after this i4 issue.

I ordered this and it works perfect with the Bumper and iPhone4 with or without the supplied adaptors. I should also work with larger cases as there is plenty of room on the connector if you don't use the adaptor that fits around the connector. It's cheaper than the Apple dock and has memory card readers.

I use this for charging instead of the Apple cord. It's connected to a powered USB hub.

Personally what I'd like to see is some hobbyist with an injection modling machine make and sell replacement covers for the iPhone 4 dock that work with the bumper. If it's as easy to remove as it seems, it would be nice to just swap it out.

Has anyone managed to return their iPhone 4 Dock beyond the returns period. I'm assuming that in the exceptional circumstances of Apple providing free cases, and then not fitting the dock, they should be willing to accept returns of docks well beyond the usual returns period. I bought the dock on 1st July, so by the time they announced the free case program it was already beyond the 14 day return period.

Dock does not Fit with iPhone 4 Bumper

I purchased and then had to return the new iPhone 4 dock. It does not work with the bumper on. Given that you have to use the bumper 100% of the time, I'm not going to take it on and off constantly to use the dock. It sits ok in the dock, but the thickness of the bumper keeps the iPhone from sitting deep enough to actually charge.

When I returned it to the Apple store, one rep suggested I try the universal dock. If you don't use any of the inserts, it works. However, it sits in there precariously without support such that the dock or the iPhone could eventually be damaged.

Apple really needs to fix this design flaw. Basically they just need to cut out the bottom of the insert and then it will fit just right.

for everyone hacking their Iphone 3g/3gs dock

you are going to ruin it fast

the 30 pin connector is very lightly soldered to the board, it was intended to be held down by the white plastic on top

After a while it will break

A work around solution is to use a dab of crazy glue and glue the front of the circuit board/30 pin connector to the bottom plastic part, this will stop it from lifting

Well this is the dumbest thing since the hockey puck mouse!

What *are* they smoking in Cupertino anyway? It never even crossed my mind when I ordered the i4 and the dock (and the bumper yet to come) that the thing wouldn't fit into the dock with the bumper in place. That's just plain stupid Apple! C'mon already.

So, what are my choices for keeping the phone charged/synched with the bumper on, just a cable?? My dock is going back as soon as it arrives. Hey Steve & Jony - WAKE UP GUYS!
