This is not being sarcastic but how good is this thing going to be...optical quality galss and all that battery life. I think there will be announcements to come at launch too. This is teh boring stuff.

Just one thought: if it is glass, how about possible breaking the glass? Of course, you should not drop it or bump it, but my celphone has survived some falls. Will the iPhone do?

Exactly my concern when I read this. So I'm even more curious what protective cases and belt clips they'll have available to protect the iPhone.

This is certainly really good news. Like everyone else is saying, based on my experiences with iPods, the battery life Apple claims is usually spot on, if not slightly underestimated sometimes. As far as the glass surface---can't go wrong with more durability.

I love the "they don't say" for the competitors internet, video, and audio play back battery ratings. There's that Apple sense of humor.

This REALLY makes it harder for me to wait a while before I make the plunge and get an iPhone. The thing is I just graduated from college and I've been on a Verizon Family Share plan with my parents for who knows how long, and my part of the plan doesn't expire/renew until this March. I'd get the phone now, but paying the termination fee AND paying for a new plan with AT&T doesn't make any sense right now. I guess I'll just get to go try it sometime after it comes out, and wait out any software upgrades and get an even more perfected version this spring. :)

yes..lets destroy the beautiful and elegant product by slapping on some revolting leather case or belt clip. i mean come on..why hide all the wonderful engineering that Apple has created for this phone. put it in ur pocket and dont shove other stuff in there. ive learnt to do that with all my non-apple phones already.

glass = lots of fingerprints and smudges? easier to clean i guess.

whatever..go apple. u kill all the competition.

I was wondering this also... I'm not sure exactly what they meant. Most traditional touchscreen devices have a digitizer surface sandwiched in with the LCD. This is usually glass. Also the LCD itself is usually deposed on glass. Organic technologies that let you avoid using glass (e.g. OLED) are supposed to be a substantial advance, in small part because they can be bent, etc, without breaking. But I don't think this technology is really ready to just show up on the iPhone this month?

But then no one knows exactly how the digitizer on the iPhone works well enough to handle the fast multitouch responsiveness it needs.

If what they meant was that the front surface of the screen had been plastic, with glass in the LCD and digitizer layers sandwiched already behind it (like on some of the iPods), then this definitely seems like an improvement.

I personally don't see the point of having 80GB in a device that is so susceptible to damage like a cell phone, which is one of the reasons I own a nano instead of a full blown iPod.

You bought a Nano instead of an iPod because you think the drive will fail? Your argument is based on a false premiss. Why do you assume iPods are so susceptible to damage? Ours are taken up mountains, to the beach and everywhere we travel and have worked flawlessly for many years now and their 60 GIG drives have not been an issue. If there were any truth in your comment don't you think the press and Apple haters would have had a field day by now? I am sure the iPhone will be as reliable as our trusty iPods (our Mac laptops). Fear not go and buy two iPhones :)

When do these things go into production? It comes out in 11 days. Surely they've started putting these things together already if they are going to have 3 million of them?

Was this decision just made or are they trickling out improvement press releases to build the value of the phone back up after some of the expected backlash began. Smart. Does the double duty of showing Apple's commitment to providing a great product as well as showing Apple wants to ensure the value is recognized to help curb the inevitable initial backlash from the rest of the cell phone makers and carriers.
Yes -- I believe you're right that the glass and better battery have already been instituted in the production process. I don't know the motivation about WHEN this was decided though. It could've been from the very beginning, prior to even announcing the phone. "We offer them this -- boom -- but then tell 'it's even better' -- BOOM!"

But I don't think so. Steve knows they only really get one shot at this. So much hype and money has been thrown at this thing that it's got to be everything eveyone wants and more. I think we're looking at two things that would've been in the iPhone 5 months from now as iPhone 1.1 shipped at the holiday season.

Pricing and Availability
iPhone will be available in the US on June 29, 2007 in a 4GB model for $499 (US) and an 8GB model for $599 (US), and will work with either a PC or Mac®. iPhone will be sold in the US through Apple’s retail and online stores, and through AT&T’s select retail stores.
no mention of a contract and it says "select" ATT stores. what do you think this means?

I personally am glad that they are using glass instead of plastic. hopefully this will continue (iPod?) and :apple: will go even greener, with using less plastics. good move on their part.

This is great news and surely will make some of the people in the "maybe the iPhone is worth it" come join us. Hopefully it's just the beginning of pleasant surprises! But has the iPhone started manufacturing full steam yet? I assume so if the supposed 3 million launch is almost here. Hopefully this is the beginning of graceful and wise marketing by Apple, slowly introducing us to the pleasantly unexpected features!

Check the fine print

Okay, 8 hours sounds like good news, but this is definitely the ideal. Check the fine print for the tweaks that they made to the settings to get to that point. Like turning ON call forwarding does that mean that any incoming calls are rerouted while you're on the phone? And the WiFi feature Ask to Join Networks was turned off. Does this mean that you have to manually select your Wi-Fi networks to get optimal battery life? This might not be too bad an inconvenience, given the batter life.

And the browsing was based of WiFi with no mention of the cell browsing time.

Hmmmm....

I dont wanna sounds negative  but haven't Steve already praised that glass surface during his January keynote??

Yea, I know.. I already thought it was glass all this time. Whatever.
I want one bad.

No, I don't see the point of having a HD in a cell phone, which is certainly more prone to damage than an HD based iPod, simply due to the nature of the device. People tend to drop cell phones more often than they do iPods.

Example: My Nokia 6280 recently survived a fall from a height of 2 meters (approx. 6 feet). The phone still works fine, but the screen is toast. My Sony Ericsson k700i survived a fall from a height of over 3 meters, yet still works like a charm. The likelihood of both devices still being functional after being dropped if they had HD's is extremely small.

Despite all that the iPhone does, it is first and foremost a cell phone.

Steve himself said, "The killer app is making calls."

This is definitely great news. It has been almost 1/2 a year since the iPhone was announced, that is a long time in terms of new/more efficient electronics being released. And I am glad Apple is doing their best to improve the iPhone before its release.

Apple has factsheet and comparison-sheet of iPhone here. It says that Nokia N95 has no Wi-Fi. Well, fact is that N95 DOES have Wi-Fi. I really don't know why Apple is making such a claim on their website.

that's fantastic! only downside is that this is probably the only update iPhone will see until before launch. ...doubtful they'll be updating this anymore for a while now.

how long till an 80gb iPhone?

Why do you need a 80GB iPhone?

I know, because you want to have all of you content, but is that really necessary?

I used to think it was, but then I got an iPod Shuffle and basically retired my full 40GB iPod. I now use iTunes as a central hub for all of my content and I have smart playlists (currently I have one which selects from songs which have only been played 10 times or less from over 10,000 songs) and whenever I pop my shuffle into the dock I just do a replace/autofill and upload a new set of songs.

This really keeps things interesting.

When I get an iPhone I'll just load up any TV shows, movies and Podcasts that I have watched and put on about 2GB of music (that will be about 32 hours worth).

Don't be too sure. We could be seeing an announcement every day or two for the next eleven days - it would certainly send the stock through the roof. Let's have one of the announcements be the multi-touch iMac styled to compliment the iPhone and advertised as partners to one another (not very realistic I know because we are waiting on Leopard - same is true of iWork and iLife, ho-hum back to everyday life.)
