This is great news. The only thing that would be better would be the GPS or larger storage surprise :) But seriously, how did they get such better battery? I mean, it's a huge increase, especially when just taking the audio time into account. Is this a new battery or simply better power management? That's what I'm wondering...

Glass is green? - check the whole process....

I personally am glad that they are using glass instead of plastic. hopefully this will continue (iPod?) and :apple: will go even greener, with using less plastics.

Turning oil into plastic is a lot "greener" than using oil to melt sand and turn the sand into glass - you use a lot less oil when you turn it directly into plastic.

One of my big 'use tests' was that the battery could survive a weekend with no recharging with: A 2 hour movie, 2 hours of web browsing, 2 hours of talk, and 2 hours of music playback; while still having enough juice to be 'on' for the rest of the weekend.

With the old specs, this wasn't realistic. With the new ones, it is.

What about using recycled, and recycling? (For both plastic and glass.) Do you happen to have any info on which is easier to recycle? (i.e. even if glass takes more energy to produce the first time, maybe it can be recycled more easily so it makes up for it?)

gps in the phone? they have bluetooth gps devices... but without a 3rd party developer to write the software...
...so now when we finally have gotten a phone in the iPod, we are still going to have bring external devices to get full functionality?
Adding a GPS chip is a couple of dollars. It is beyond me why Apple passed this opportunity, especially since they have made such a big thing about the google maps.

Regardless how much I love the UI of the iPhone, as a European I am seriously underwhelmed by the hardware; single 2Mpx camera, no 3G, no GPS, no MMS,...

I wont buy an iPhone until it goes has onboard GPS like N95 and the upcoming SE phones. I could live with the other crippling factors, but certainly not onboard GPS.

i like how the release is 2 weeks away and we don't know anything on pricing plans. I thought by now apple would issue a press release inviting the media to talk about all this stuff....
but i do like the improve battery and better screen

It is more energy effecient to not recycle glass. It takes less energy to make glass from scratch than it does to recycle glass, expecially glass that has so many impurities in it in such as scratch proof glass.

Wait for real review

What ever we hear from now til launch date is for AAPL. Apple tries to make up the lost on the day of WWDC 07 keynote. Wait until the actual iPhone gets reviewed before jumping in the conclusion on iPhone performance.

Remember Apple said the same thing about 6+ battery hours for SR MBP, but the real world performance showed between 3.5 - 4.5 hours.

Legally Apple can get away with lowest voice volume (when talking), dimmest video quality (when watching video) without getting into legal matter.

I get madder and madder at Verizon wireless every month, and depending on the price iof the plans, I might be a switcher with all this new news.....

:p
Where is the press release stating the memory is 8 and 16gb on these suckers? 4gb and 8gb is a joke.

Why is it a joke?

The iPhone will offer more on-board memory than any phone on the market, especially any smartphone.

There are many potential iPhone customers (the majority, I'd assume) who have no interest at all in putting their entire music collection on their cell phone.

First, Apple pre-announcing a product by 6 months, now Apple announcing 'upgrades' to previously announced specifications just weeks before the release.

The times they are a' changing..

Protection

Exactly my concern when I read this. So I'm even more curious what protective cases and belt clips they'll have available to protect the iPhone.

Anyone know if Cingular will cover the iPhone with its equiptment protection plan? I know when I was looking to switch providers a year or so ago, Cingular would not offer coverage on thier line of PDA's. It was a deal breaker for me since Verizon has already replaced my Blackberry once for only $50 since i have their plan of $5.99 month.

Mind you this may have changed since then but... I have not been able to find an answer on their website and have yet to have the chance to get down to their retail store.

An invisible shield wouldn't interrupt the function of the touch screen in any significant way, but it would make it harder to slide your finger on the surface, and significantly reduces optical quality.

FWIW, I use a Treo 650 with the Palm-provided screen protector (which is basically, a big clear sticker that fits the exact dimension of the screen) and have zero issues with either touch or optical quality.
I don't have my Treo in some dorky S&M leather or clunky, hard protective case. I carry it in my pants pocket daily and the screen looks and acts perfectly fine. Not a single mark to be found - and that's after 2 years of heavy use.
I have had such good results with that screen protector that I had planned on acquiring a similar one for my iPhone - knowing some 3rd party has those ready to roll on the 29th. But now, I'll have to see what the new screen is like (and will still probably go with an adhesive screen protector in the end).

With my VZW contract set to expire Aug 5, I'll enjoy the solid month of user reviews, praise, complaints and feedback which could shape my phone future.

And yes, those new battery stats (albeit, coming out of Apple marketing which we all know can be less than accurate) are good to hear. There has been a lot of concern around battery. I wonder why such a massive jump in performance? Pretty sure it's not advancements in battery tech - more in controller tech, maybe?

[...] , which is certainly more prone to damage than an HD based iPod, simply due to the nature of the device. People tend to drop cell phones more often than they do iPods. [...]

iPods have this nice 'cord' attached to them which can prevent it from falling in quite a number of situations.

I also tend to lose my phone often...like every day.

Eventually, as GPS comes standard on phones, I suspect there will be automatic locator service. Go to the web site, enter your phone number and password, and your phone replies with its GPS location -- which is then displayed on Google Maps. (For those recent stories about how many people lose their phones in the toilet, it might be interesting to track the sewage system  ).

A version of this will allow parents to track their (young) kids' locations.

I personally don't see the point of having 80GB in a device that is so susceptible to damage like a cell phone, which is one of the reasons I own a nano instead of a full blown iPod.

You bought a Nano instead of an iPod because you think the drive will fail? Your argument is based on a false premiss. Why do you assume iPods are so susceptible to damage? Ours are taken up mountains, to the beach and everywhere we travel and have worked flawlessly for many years now and their 60 GIG drives have not been an issue. If there were any truth in your comment don't you think the press and Apple haters would have had a field day by now? I am sure the iPhone will be as reliable as our trusty iPods (our Mac laptops). Fear not go and buy two iPhones :)

I agree with Digitalclips 100%. We have a 3rd gen ipod, 20gb, and that little thing has been through what no similar device (non-iPod) would've handle. Drops, falls from high places, left in the car under blaring sun for days, rain, snow, name it! My hubby is very rough soemtimes. His cell phone memory erased completely and died, it has nicks, scratches and dents all over, while the iPod has none! Never lost data, ever! It still works perfectly and we use it everyday.
