This is another case of Apple under-promising and over-delivering. They do make you wait just for little bits of information, but it's always worth it!

Great news on the glass front. It should make the screen look that much more clearer.
The battery life is also an unexpected improvement. With battery life now claimed to be much better than its rivals (performance-wise), I think that we can now assume that the battery will not be replaceable and if ever asked as to why this was the case, I'm sure we can expect one of Steve Jobs' typical great replies (i.e. he answers the question without directly answering the question) saying that battery life is much better than many phones on the market.

I also found it interesting that there was no mention of the 2 year contract. The fact that it has been removed from the iPhone adverts too suggests that we may be able to purchase the iPhone with just a 1-year contract or possibly without a contract at all, although that's more wishful thinking.

I think it has been established already over the past couple of weeks that the iPhone will be sold from the corporate AT&T stores in addition to Apple's online and retail stores.

Wow, this is excellent news that I didn't see coming. I expected this kind of battery life upgrade in the 2G model. But cool! I'll be sure to tell my dad since he is getting one. :D

The Real Bombshell news would be...

in to the 6 months from announcement to shipping Flash memory prices have dropped dramatically, Apple will pleasantly surprise everyone by shipping 8Gb and 16Gb models for the same price instead of the 4 and 8. Watch the stock price rise then.

Joking aside, I feel the need for more than 4/8Gb. By the time it reaches Australia rev 2 will be out, & probably with the higher storage configuration.

Don't like the styling of the bluetooth headset though!

Cheers :)

Why do you need a 80GB iPhone?

I know, because you want to have all of you content, but is that really necessary?

If the iPhone is advertised as a phone AND an iPod, then the answer to your question is yes. It will never get a Hard Drive-based storage though, but we will see 32+ gegs iPhones next year.

The Why

Because the N95 only gets 4 hours of talk time with Wi-Fi turned off.

Apple has factsheet and comparison-sheet of iPhone here. It says that Nokia N95 has no Wi-Fi. Well, fact is that N95 DOES have Wi-Fi. I really don't know why Apple is making such a claim on their website.

glass screen

i was also under the impression that it was a glass display. i remember steve telling us in his keynote and then distinctly remember thinking that they must be using glass coz it wont scratch.

I too am going to find it hard to resist buying the rev. A. The fact that I would have to buy my current contract out makes it easier not to get one right away. I am hoping that when I am ready there are 8/16GB models rev. B models. That will also give all the 3rd party suppliers time to come out with good cases and such. Wouldn't want to buy one next weekend and have no good case available for it.

On a more personal computing note, where is the new iMac already. C'mon Apple, release it tomorrow, don't make us wait till after the iPhone launch.

Not an update, this is rumor control

This announcement isn't really about feature updates. It's about rumor control.

As some people have pointed out, Steve already mentioned the glass screen at the original announcement. However, Apple needs to control chitchat about their $600 device being easily marred and scratched. Even more than iPods, these are going to be in peoples' pockets all the time.

I think it's the same with the battery time. I had started to hear talk recently about how the battery time wasn't going to be good enough to use this device normally as a phone, plus an iPod, plus for web browsing. This announcement was to increase confidence that (unlike a Treo or Q) your battery won't die during the day, if you use it like you want to.

Software updates will come thick and fast

that's fantastic! only downside is that this is probably the only update iPhone will see until before launch. ...doubtful they'll be updating this anymore for a while now.
how long till an 80gb iPhone?

Physical update yes. I want 3G and GPS and 32GB! I think we will see a second model before year end. They promised expansion to Europe by then, and they will require 3G. So at January MacExpo...

But software updates will probably come thick and fast, and I suspect we will see very, very significant software improvements and new functionality quite quickly. I will be completely unsurprised if there is a software update waiting the second we plug them into iTunes..

that glass better be shatterproof, lol. I've dropped my ****** samsung like 10 times in the last week alone on hard ground. thats why payin $600 for a phone is gonna be so hard

My strategy

I think I will wait around 2 weeks for reviews, comments, etc. before I make the choice. I think 8 gig will be enough for me because I can always make playlists of songs I want, movies, and photos and just manage them through iTunes. Yes, I would want to keep EVERYTHING on the iPhone, but hey you have to charge it everyday and I will just remove or add media to the phone when I want to watch or listen to it. Do you really want to keep an episode of The Office on the phone for 2 months? Watch it on the iPhone, then delete it from the phone and keep a copy on the home machine. This will work for me!

Uhmmm I think you mis-read

I just checked out the web page you linked to and unless they just updated it, it does say the the N95 has wireless on the comparison sheet : /

only 11 more days until I camp out in front of the apple store from 7 am (when they let the mall walkers in..or is it 8?) till 6 pm. I'll have a two gallon thing of OJ with some vodka in it and I'll be tailgating all day till 6pm

thats if they do "first come first serve"

I'm so excited, now a better screen and battery life..my credit card...err my dads credit card is waiting :D

oh for those of you waiting for rev B have fun while I enjoy my :apple: iphone :D :D :D :D :D :D

Just curious how it was never mentioned that it would go on sale at 6pm on the 29th in the Press Release. Anywho, does anyone know if the iPhone will be available at all at&t stores (including Authorized Agent stores), or just Corporate Stores?

gps in the phone? they have bluetooth gps devices... but without a 3rd party developer to write the software...

Not trying to side with Apple on their implementation of 3rd party applications here, but wouldn't it be possible to use a Bluetooth (or Wi-Fi) GPS system and then pair it with a website which requires a unique login of some sort which then provides you with some sort of animated GPS feedback?

I know it sounds more complicated than a traditional approach, but it does seem possible, no?

I was hoping that, but with Apple's press release this morning I'm starting to think this isn't realistic. I would have thought they would have mentioned it along with the improved battery life and glass screen.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm not holding my breath.
