Well to say QC isn't good is a bit of a stretch when u consider HOW MANY phones are made and were boughten from the ore sale to the launch. You have to consider the sheer vast number of phones your talking in the multiple millions!!! So if 100,000 out of 4-5 million phones have issues what is that percentage 2% a little more?? Not too bad if u ask me.

I haven't bought an iP5 (and I'm quite happy to wait for the next iteration), but I must say... what's wrong with some of you?

I've owned *a lot* of Apple products, and the one thing I've learnt is: there is no such thing as a perfect iThing. Seriously. You may think you're paying astro-bucks for your latest device, but unless you've ordered something hand-made (like a fine boutique guitar amp, or a piece of exquisite jewellery), you're going to get something made in a Chinese factory. Not painstakingly put together in a white room by smiling Apple employees - a fast-as-machinely-possible construction from Foxconn. Of course, there are standards to be met, but if you're all Apple fans, you'll know that almost certainly Apple has rushed to meet expected demand. Like last year. And the year before that. And so on.

I bought an iPad 3 yesterday. Funny day, I know, but it was the last day of the Back To School promo, I had found a buyer for my iPad 1, and the wife gave the green light. Happy days, especially when the wonderful young lady assisting me threw in two free Earpods in addition to my discount and gift card. But anyway, first thing: I checked it in the store for cosmetic defects. This is a no-brainer. I got home, and did the magnifying glass thing - a couple of small 'birthmarks' in the metal (not dents, just discolourations). And you know what? I was very, very, happy. Someone else might have returned to the store, but I know very well that a replacement may actually have something wrong with it. Too long / didn't read: minor cosmetic blemishes are to be expected. It's an iPhone made in China. The magnifying glass hunt for imperfections is such a 1st-world problem, it's actually shameful.

Of course, a huge dent or a nasty scratch is not good. I certainly would take it back. BUT, having worked for a major telco many years ago and supporting previous iPhone launches from a customer services point of view, there will always be that one demanding guy who feels the need to go through 5, 10 iPhones on the hunt for the elusive unicorn-built 'iOne'. It doesn't exist. Don't be that guy, people, don't be 'that guy'.

Love and hugs. Hope everyone gets the iPhone 5 they want.

You, my friend, have just made the perfect post!

Excellent advice and absolutely true. The huge environmental impact of replacing devices for very minor cosmetic issues worries me greatly (I'm not downplaying anybody's issues, if you have a bad one you can't live with I can understand you wanting a swap out, I did it myself with a yellow screen iMac once). It's important though that we all have realistic expectations.

You made the point perfectly, if it's a mass market, factory produced product you just can't expect a 100% perfect device regardless of how much it costs or who makes it.

UPDATE: Apple is overnighting me a brand new iPhone and throwing in an extra cable, adapter, and headphone set. I cannot be happier.

Be sure to report your problem! The senior advisor also wanted me to send pictures to him, which was no problem for documentation.

:apple:

Who you talk to? They keep transfer me to sales and the lead time is 2 weeks.

On the other thread, within the last 90 minutes, three members have reported that what they thought were scuffs/nicks were actually tiny bits of reflective glue residue which they were able to pretty much entirely remove. Probably won't apply to all of you, but hopefully will assist some.

This sucks.

Either I let them hold another $1000 to ship a replacement phone or I send it to them and wait until they get it and replace it. About a week is what I got before the replacement will ship.

Did you talk to sales? they not holding anything... But if they don't get your phone they will charge your card again.

I'm on the phone right now with Apple's support and i'm acting completely clueless and i asked him why the adapter and lightning to USB cord isn't available at my local Apple store and he doesn't seem to be offering me anything but we shall see by the end of the call!

EDIT: He's currently checking to see if he's able to distribute me an extra cord. Fingers crossed!

Yea, thats not what they told me when I called. Im dropping the phone off at a ups store with a code they gave me so I dont have to pay for the next day air shipping.....

Several other people said the same thing. You might want to check and see if your phone actually shipped, they most likely are holding the amount and the phone will ship in a couple days.....

I did as well, he said that he is unable to issue any but told me to contact sales. I'll try that now.

Well have you seen the actual iPhone 5 unit? you will understand their frustration if you have seen it in store.

I just left the AT&T store w/ a no-commitment iPhone 5. I really had to hunt for this "defect", but for the sake of sharing another out-of-the-box cosmetic glitch:

I'm not OCD enough to bother w/ a replacement for this "condition". :p
When you have to "hunt" for something wrong then you absolutely need to just enjoy your phone. Why waste the time to find a flaw? This is not about giving Apple a free pass on quality, this about the people like yourself who will hunt and hunt until they spot an issue. As far as your issue goes, I see absolutely nothing. I don't need glasses, I have near-perfect vision and a very large computer display. ;)
I don't see anything wrong in this picture. I think some of you look for things on purpose.
Some do. Some obviously have photos of small damages. Whether these are that visible without the macro function of their camera is another story, but all in all, there are some affected buyers who should probably be on the phone with or at Apple, the others are just clogging up the lines.

Of the many photos I have seen I have seen a trend, a lot of them show a blue substance on the phone. I would assume that is glue, I think it is a good assumption, and in that case, Apple needs to fix that ****.

blah blah....

more blah blah blah blah.......

You dont own one ? And you want to give those who are having issues, advice ? lmao. Get off of the pedestal.

I would like to share my story here.

I Pre-ordered my iPhone 5 from apple's website on 9/14 and received the phone yesterday, when i opened the box i immediately notice the 'home button' off center about 3~5 degree and total 8 nicks on the back metal band which are very noticeable.

After reading all of your feedbacks here, i called Apple today and spoke with a very polite gentlemen over the phone and he scheduled the appointment for me to the nearest apple retail store this afternoon for a swap, i walked in to the apple store and checked-in with a lady, and less than 2 minutes a lady and a gentlemen come to me and checked on my phone and only asked me one thing 'did you back it up in iCloud or your computer?' and i told them 'YES' and then they took my phone away and about 4 minutes later, they come back to me with a brand new iPhone 5 and activate in front of me to make sure everything works and have me to do 100% inspection before i take off. with everything done this whole swap only takes me less than 8 minutes.

Apple - You have the WORLD CLASS customer service ;)

For all of you, please try to call apple and hope they can do the same thing they did to me to everyone of you that have issues.

GOOD LUCK... all

A replacement will be sent to me and I got a free lightning cable. Hopefully the new one has no dents.

Agreed. I used the term "hunt" to reflect that one really has to be trying hard & purposefully to find these kind of super-minor blemishes, which I did only in response to seeing this thread. This is clearly super-minor (as are, arguably, some others in this thread) and as already stated, I'm not OCD to go beyond simply posting a pic of what I found. I'm enjoying the phone & am very happy with it. :)

This is the first I've read about them actually admitting that there is a potential problem.

I also asked for a replacement. They simply refused

The advisor I talked to told me he cannot ship me anything, instead he referred me to an apple store. He also added that the genius would swap my phone in the store if he/she sees what I told is correct.

Personally I don't want to have a box with a serial number different than the phone itself. When you want to sell, people always question this if they see something like this.

Should I go for a swap, or should call again, I am afraid that he took notes to my account regarding my call.

Hm, thank God my iPhone came it great condition, but once again, I like how Apple is further boosting the confidence of their consumer base by standing behind their product

I called again and they told I will get an email with my label and when the phone is shipping. Either way I'm trying my local apple store again tomorrow. They were out.

If you swap your phone at an Apple store, then yes the original box will show a different serial number, but Apple provide you with all of the exchange paperwork which will give you a full record to show a prospective buyer.

I know this from having had to previously replace my 3GS because of light bleed around a poorly sealed screen.
