I think there is definitely a market for this. I have the Z Flip. Quite a good phone. However other than the portability, there is nothing else. I would prefer to have the Z Fold type foldable and the Flip is not for me. Think this one might come in 2028 at the earliest.

I bought a 2024 Razr to play with out of curiosity (at $200 for the prepaid variant, it’s cheap enough), and while the phone in general is good, it feels like the flip form factor doesn’t have a problem that it’s trying to solve. The front screen isn’t super usable (this is apparently better on the Plus where it’s slightly taller), especially if you already have a smartwatch. It feels like the flip requires too much effort to open compared to a slab (nearly impossible to one-hand), and it’s freakishly tall when open as well. It’s a very cool toy but even iOS/Android aside, I think I’d rather daily a slab.

The book-fold type seems far more useful, if you’re going tablet size, two hands is not unreasonable and the phone is actually useful when folded.

I am ready. Lets go. No reason to tempt me any further at this point.

We don't know yet, of course... but the rumored renders of the iPhone "Fold" already put it in the category of an iPhone mini once folded.

Personally I'm looking for a Foldable to replace both my iPhone and my iPad mini. "I suspect" I might be disappointed in how small the new fold is, but time will tell.

It can't be asked enough, where would the industry be if it weren't for Samsung's world leading display innovation, and their never ending desire to keep tech exciting and move on from that boring slab form factor? All the while Apple looks to only maximize profits until other companies like Samsung, and all the consumer who pay for bleeding edge tech, do all the heavy lifting with making these new form factors mainstream. This why I'll never buy another iPhone. My money is on the companies who will actually bear the cost and risks of introducing new tech to move the industry forward. Nothing worse than coattail riders.

If Apple can make such a phone, it would be quite nice. But Apple is always late to the game.
Some may argue that "Apple is always late to the game." But it is not a game, and the definition of "late" depends upon whomever is defining late. E.g. many claim the original iPhone as late. Yet the entire world quickly followed the v1 iPhone.

Personally I look at the products and the ecosystem, not some silly categorization as "late." And I see superb products and an unmatched ecosystem. We all know Apple engineers are looking at all the latest tech. Any fool can take tech and throw it at the wall to be first and seeing what sticks - - but that is not something to brag about.

That rendering...
I can't help but see someone bent the phone really badly... 🤣

Back to topic.
I can see how this is going to be useful, only if they can do something about the crease. It will drive me bananas if there is a bloody crease.

I hope they manage to make it Razr like in the look and feel department. That phone just felt right.

The upgraded V3xx display had a higher PPI than the early iPhones and so the graphics were also gorgeous.

It could do so much in such a small form factor. Its mainboard was smaller than the battery. Just amazing

Holy smokes! This is it! I’ve been waiting millions of years for this. No seriously. I would 100 million percent wait for this one. Still on iPhone 11 here and already have an iPad for iPad sized stuff and Mac for Mac sized stuff. A clamshell iPhone would be AWESOME! Do it Apple! Do it!
