It can't be asked enough, where would the industry be if it weren't for Samsung's world leading display innovation, and their never ending desire to keep tech exciting and move on from that boring slab form factor? All the while Apple looks to only maximize profits until other companies like Samsung, and all the consumer who pay for bleeding edge tech, do all the heavy lifting with making these new form factors mainstream. This why I'll never buy another iPhone. My money is on the companies who will actually bear the cost and risks of introducing new tech to move the industry forward. Nothing worse than coattail riders.
Where would Samsung be if it weren't for the chaebol system and almost infinite corruption in South Korean government?

Something to think about.

- Apple fans when Samsung follows Apple : They only know how to copy. Copycats!
- Apple fans when Apple follows Samsung : Apple was obviously waiting until the technology matured.

Don't flame me. I am an Apple fanboy of over 40 years myself, my first computer being Apple II+. But I do see double standard.
Exactly. The hypocrisy is astounding.

Keep it. In the feature-phone days I preferred candy-bar phones to flip-phones. Thinner in your pocket, less mass and volume (due to lack of hinges), cheaper overall.

I miss those days.

I still don't "get" this obsession with foldable smartphones. But if you enjoy paying more for a chunk device that'll develop a crease in the display, U do U.

Come back when we have displays with paper-like flexibility.

Sony Ericsson T616 was my first phone. I loved it. I still remember the "Cingular tone" before they became AT&T 20 years ago.

I like the idea of a normal sized iPhone when folded and then an iPad mini sized iPhone when unfolded. Would people want this type of fold?
There are currently no rumors about an iPhone with anywhere near that form factor, so it's unlikely

Apple is "exploring" the idea of a foldable iPhone with a "square, clamshell-style" design, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Flip-iPhone-Thumb-3-1.jpg

A so-called "iPhone Flip" — unlikely to be the real name — would compete with devices such as Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the modern-day Motorola Razr.

The clamshell iPhone would be released at some point after Apple's first foldable iPhone, which is expected to launch in September this year.

The first foldable iPhone is expected to open up like a book, similar to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7. This design will provide users with a large 7.7-inch inner display for watching videos and gaming, and there will likely be multitasking functionality. A clamshell iPhone, on the other hand, would be more about portability and pocketability.

"Apple is betting that its first foldable iPhone will be successful enough to generate real demand for the category and that customers will want additional shapes and sizes, much as they have with traditional slab-style iPhones," said Gurman. Nevertheless, he said a clamshell iPhone is "far from guaranteed to reach the market."

I'd love an iPhone flip (retro). Give me messages, email. Thats really it. It would kill doomscrolling. And that would be a great thing.

Oh, I need my outdoors apps, so my hiking apps, tracking my walking/jogging/running.

Basically, keep me active, but detox me from doomscrolling. That would be a solid effing win.

MAKE THIS HAPPEN APPLE!!!

I'm all for a flip phone but let's be creative ... a modern version of the Motorola V220, 85.5 x 44 x 24 mm, and less than 100 g weight. The 24mm thickness would permit the inclusion of an awesome camera (need large thickness for a better camera). So much more practical than a slap of metal and glass.
A phone that's 24mm thick?? 😳

I wouldn't get too excited. It's going to take another 5 years before anything comes of this.

I'm all for not-necessarily-first-but-always-the-best-implementation but they're really starting to look slow now.

They need to pick up the pace with hardware development.

My roommate has an android flip phone and when I do help her with her phone, I can’t get past the visibility where the display opens and closes. Just looks weird. Font is off.

That’s what I want. A phone with 2 folds so the main screen is always active, the rear camera is always to the rear like this one

yes, the missus uses a samsung flip, and she likes the form factor.

... Because it can actually fit in her pocket/tiny bags.
That's literally all. She doesn't care about any of the other bells and whistles; she just likes the size.

Could she buy a smaller slab phone? not really. While there are small phones out there; they're small 100% of the time; whereas her flip is 6.8" whenever she uses it, but fits into her teeny tiny jeans pockets; or a bag that contains her phone, some lipstick and not much else.

until iOS actually has a really update other than some transparency on icons and text this won’t be too great.

Off-topic, but iOS receives many updates throughout the years. Most are not "visible", and Liquid Glass was a major change that introduced true physics into the interface beyond just transparency.

As for on-topic, a flip-style would be a safe entry for Apple, but I can't see its true value. I surely don't want to flip open my phone every time I want to glance at it.

Like my old HTC that has a sliding keyboard, great idea, that worked fine, the only problem was that the mobile network was not up to it then, still had 2G.
My first phone was a t-mobile sidekick haha different times indeed
