It can't be asked enough, where would the industry be if it weren't for Samsung's world leading display innovation, and their never ending desire to keep tech exciting and move on from that boring slab form factor? All the while Apple looks to only maximize profits until other companies like Samsung, and all the consumer who pay for bleeding edge tech, do all the heavy lifting with making these new form factors mainstream. This why I'll never buy another iPhone. My money is on the companies who will actually bear the cost and risks of introducing new tech to move the industry forward. Nothing worse than coattail riders.
That's not strictly true. If the relationship is anything like Apple's relationship with suppliers in China, the innovation might be predominantly Apple's.

I like the idea of a normal sized iPhone when folded and then an iPad mini sized iPhone when unfolded. Would people want this type of fold?
How would iOS even work on a display that is half of 6.3”? The smallest display iOS was designed for was 3.5” with the OG iPhone, any smaller and touch elements would be frustrating unless a stylus is used.

Let’s bring back physical keyboards while we’re at it 🤣

They're coming don't worry

The only reason I would want a flip iPhone is to look just as cool as Vic Mackey on The Shield while actually holding an iPhone in my hands. The reason I don’t want it is because it would have too many compromises.
A Flip (not Fold) iPhone with its exterior display would basically have a WatchOS UX/I as iOS would be too cramped on a 3.15” exterior screen.

An iPhone Flip won’t be usable one-handed like the mini is.
I'm not really sure I track that… we haven't heard any rumors about the dimensions. But honestly, I mostly care about pocket-ability.

I don't really see how they can make this with a battery better than the iPhone Air, though, which seems to be a deal-breaker for most of the market.

Don't flame me. I am an Apple fanboy of over 40 years myself, my first computer being Apple II+. But I do see double standard.

I'm all for a flip phone but let's be creative ... a modern version of the Motorola V220, 85.5 x 44 x 24 mm, and less than 100 g weight. The 24mm thickness would permit the inclusion of an awesome camera (need large thickness for a better camera). So much more practical than a slap of metal and glass.

This is the *one* I am waiting on. Not into the Fold format and size. If Apple does a clamshell right, it could be the new iPhone mini, actually pocket-friendly. If it ends up reasonably thick + durable, it’s a winner for me.

Same here! This is the one I want! I want a Pro level flip phone that is more pocketable. Been debating the Razr for the last few years but just don't want to switch back to Android. I was an OG Android using because I didn't have AT&T and the iPhone didn't come to Sprint until the 4S.

I have seen a few other the last 2-3 years, and they all seem to have problems after a while, so maybe Apple will make one that keeps working.
I would like phones to shrink down a bit, like the old Nexus 4, it was a nice small phone, I think phones are too large these days, which is fine if that is what you want. Phone that fold, may be smaller when folded, but are thicker.

Exactly what I wanted to say. Plus, being able to hang up by snapping it shut would feel so good (on the once in a blue moon chance that I actually get a phone call XD ) Though I think that my propensity to fidget with stuff like this is gonna wear out that hinge real fast 😭

I said pretty much exactly that, but it’s not a criticism of Samsung or glorifying Apple, it’s just their respective business models. Apple usually set the tone for the prevailing industrial design in phones, tablets and laptops. Samsung and the other manufacturers follow that design language. The Android phone makers usually have much larger ranges of phones and test out a lot of new ideas. Some that fail and some the go on to be standard across the market. Apple’s brand identity means that experimenting with new hardware is much higher risk than it would be for their competitors. Think antennagate and the butterfly keyboard. If that happened on Samsung or Lenovo, it would be long forgotten but for Apple it was very damaging. I’d be pretty keen on a flip style iPhone, but if it looked like some of the ones I’ve seen thus far after a few months of use, I don’t think I’d be very happy.

I've already clicked "Quote" and started typing this comment so it's too late to stop even though I've just realised you're probably being sarcastic. In all seriousness, Clips, who made those keyboard iPhone cases are taking pre-orders for a MagSafe iPhone keyboard. I'm taking pre-orders for a Mac-safe iPhone keyboard. I've pre-ordered mine

Apple just waited for others to prove the worth of a concept and then Apple employs it correctly. ;)

Wasn’t that what they said of RR in the old days. :)

A small, compact flipping phone would be useful. If I’m out riding a bicycle - a big brick of an iPhone like the Pro Max isn’t that ideal - it barely fits in the pocket of a jersey. In contrast the iPhone 5 was a good size.

until iOS actually has a really update other than some transparency on icons and text this won’t be too great.

Not sure what you mean? I think it's clear to me that some of the iOS 26 changes (that weren't necessarily tied to Liquid Glass) were specifically designed with various and changing screen sizes in mind. The pill shaped menu bars, for example, allow a much more ergonomic transition from a 5" folded screen to an 8" unfolded one than the previous standard of having menu bars spanning the entire width of the screen.

So you’re more interested in the tech industry “innovating” for the sake of capital than you are on simply having the most quality version of a product?
