I think it all makes sense. A Magic Slate periferal would be nice too! :D

I am very excited for the even next month. I hope the hype pays off and Apple dazzles us with a 'keyboard inside a screen' :) If it goes well, I think we aren't too far away from finally loosing the keyboard on the laptops and just having two screens, the bottom being multi-touch with the keyboard in the screen like the iSlate!

Also, I wonder if the 4th Gen iPhone will have this crazy new screen and keyboard tech! :D

iSlate, therefore I am!

islate it will be it appears!
Magic slate will probably be some kind of product in line with magic mouse, aka a keyboard with virtual keys as raised bumps, then as a track pad the bumps hide, then as a mouse the mousepad outline appears an forced feedback from the screen to the finger aids in tactile location… also the brail optioned keyboard to compliment the mouse.

Whatever the tablet turns out to be you can bet it's a preview to what tech will be in the 4th gen iPhone.

Wirelessly posted (SAMSUNG-SGH-A821/1.0 SHP/VPP/R5 NetFront/3.4 SMM-MMS/1.2.0 profile/MIDP-2.0 configuration/CLDC-1.1)

if apple have a media event, isn't it possible that we could be looking at multiple product launches. a magic slate as a touch keyboard, a media player ipad, and a full tablet computer macpad.

this may account for different screen sizes, OS's and such of all the rumours flying about

I really hope this thing runs iWorks. That would seal the deal for me rather than waiting for the next MBA.

Unless it IS the next MBA. Hard to see Apple churn out a fully functioning tablet; i.e., something more than just a media player oriented gadget, and still market the MBA, given the MBA's high price point & limited functionality. The two products would seem to overlap too much and I'm guessing Apple is shooting for the new tablet to be more mainstream so it would need a lower price tag -- something with only 3 digits.

when apple has a major release of a product how do they bring it from apple to the place where the conference is held. is it handcuffed to jobs in a steal briefcase?

yes, with his dictionary and spell-checker. :)

there IS a lot of security though. that's why photo series show up here occasionally purporting to show a new product being unwrapped in an elevator before reaching its destination.

"iSlate", "Magic Slate" ... anyone in Apple reading this forum must be ROTFLTHO. This is a real PEZ.

There's your "tablet"

I think you're missing the bigger picture. Look at what's been going on:

1. Apple bought Lala
2. Apple is trying to make deals with the networks for a subscription service. It only stands to reason movie subscriptions will also follow.
3. The app store already provides many apps that the average desktop user needs. There would be more powerful apps for this device since it would be able to multitask, have a bigger screen and have better specs than an iPhone.
4. While the Mac sucks at gaming, the App Store has thrived in this regard.

You mention iWork & TechCrunch is reporting that there are job offerings at Apple that imply a move of iWork to the cloud: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/12/26/apple-expanding-iwork-in-the-cloud/

It is clear that Apple is trying to make this a web device that is built around iTunes. What's unclear is how functional this OS is compared to the Mac OS. Is it a standalone device?

If they can get iLife, iTunes, & Time Machine into this device, it will be standalone. To me, if this isn't a standalone device it will be relegated to Apple TV status.

I doubt Newton will make a comeback. Jobs wasn't at the company when it was released and didn't he kill it off last time?

I think you misread my post.

1) I was responding to another poster saying if the "iSlate" can run iWork he'll buy it instead of the MBA - not stating what I think the iSlate will or won't be, just that IF the iSlate is fully functional it diminishes the marketability of the MBA.
2) I don't mention iWork or Techcrunch in my post. Maybe you replied to the wrong post?
3) IF the iSlate is a fully functional computer it will do all the things you suggest, so not sure what your point is. I don't disagree w/ anything you wrong, but it is out of key as a comment to my post.

I thought you were implying that it would be just a media playback device due to the MBA. My mistake. As to iWork, you replied to a comment about iWork. They are actively trying to push it to the cloud. I believe the MBA still has its place in the Macbook line. It would still have a better processor and it's unique within the Macbook line.

If the iSlate is a standalone device, I could see it hurting Macbook sales. The MBA is geared towards a specific customer.
