Naming the Mac Tablet

How about:

iSlabber (meaning drooling uncontrollably at the thought of a new Apple toy, like a child's drool on far worse)

iSlablet (meaning across between a tablet and a slab of concrete)

iTabslab (a reversal of the second suggestion)

iTabpad (simple to see where I'm going with this)

iPadlet (I'm not sure what to think here, just rolling them out).

Air Slab (think concrete slab only considerably lighter)

iTab Air (no explanation needed)

iSlate + 3G + full OS X = impossible, because of torrents

iSlate + 3G + iPhone OS = possible, but useless, we already got iPhones. So who needs a bigger one, that won´t fit into the pocket?

:(

Is it just me, or is the rest of the industry about to let Apple run away with the tablet market? It sure feels like it. The only one creating a sustained buzz is Apple. Apple releases a tablet-like device, consumers and the industry are in awe of it, it sells like crazy, everyone else follows suit by trying to copy it, etc.

I hope it will have full OS X Snow Leopard. With multitouch this would be quite revolutionary. Of course then it could not have 3G, but at least it would have Wi-Fi.

Unconfirmed rumor:

Unconfirmed rumor: Apple has secured a distribution deal with three major porn publishers and will call the new tablet the iPud.

lets not forget the form factor for the original "slate"

in this context, if you blur your eyes those could sure look like something else...

That's an iBoard. duh!

After reading more about holiday sales, I think Apple is going to position this new product as the de-facto e-book reader that also has the ability to run apps from the app store. They already have a model setup that would greatly benefit authors and consumers with the app store. I know everyone on this board wants a full blown tablet, but the market is too small and cost prohibitive.

With only iPhone OS?

I think it will be a full blown tablet . Let's make a bet!:)

I think you're wrong. Fujitsu still has the trademark for "iPad" as a "HAND-HELD COMPUTING DEVICE FOR WIRELESS NETWORKING " according to the USPTO.

Exactly my point. Cisco owned the iPhone trademark even as Steve was announcing its existence at Macworld 2007.

What other computer designer EVER has created a "sustained buzz" about ANY computer or computer product? What you have recited above has been the bulk of the history of personal computing.

My question was "Were they able to buy that trademark from Fujitsu, then?" and your answer was "yes". I didn't ask "has Apple stolen the trademark from Fujitsu yet?", in which case your answer should have been "not yet".

I don't see any success in this tablet. The contemporary person can only put up with carrying so many gadget. the magic number is 1 laptop and 1 phone. other than a hardcore geek, who would carry another product—especially one so niche?

unless I can replace my macbook with the tablet, I don't see the reason in getting one.

we'll see....

There is a definite market for this. Everyone who wants an ipod touch and a kindle but thinks the Kindle is too limited in what it can do and the ipod touch is too small. I don't think it will be a full blown mac. There already exists a full-blow mac tablet called the Modbook. But for Apple to do a full-blown mac complicates things greatly. You have to worry about all sorts of things you wouldn't have to worry about if you just scaled iphone os to a bigger device. Remember apple is all about controlling the entire experience from the ground up and a full-blown machine doesn't do allow for that. And it requires more battery, more money, etc etc. It would be too cost prohibitive.

It would be too cost prohibitive.

people can barely afford the monthly bill for the iPhone much less another gadget if you can't replace a laptop. esp. if they add a subscription service on top of this new media device.

12 inch macbook please. i wish they still made the same 12 inch powerbook with an updated chip. that was the best apple product ever.

They were talking about the "iSlate" on TWIT tonight. Kevin Rose and Robert Scoble were the guests. They are saying the tablet is very real and to paraphrase "there will be a lot of Kindles on eBay the day after the announcement." Scoble said he had a source other than the one referenced in the NYT article. It sounds to be more of a "next level" web-connected/cloud media device than tablet style netbook.
