The removal of the headphone jack may prove to be the most effective switching mechanism apple has innovated for a long time :(

I don't believe that will cause a significant number of people to switch to Android phones. I do see significant numbers switching to cheaper Android phones now that subsidized phone contracts are gone or at least delaying their next iPhone purchase.

So you're not an Apple user, but take the time to log onto an Apple forum to post derogatory comments? Yikes. You have a lot more to worry about than Apple's lineup of products.

Stop posting garbage. My signature clearly states I own a MacBook Pro as well as a Hackintosh.

I don't know why they even called it a "subsidy"

You were paying for the phone each month... you just didn't realize it. A small portion of your monthly bill was for the phone and the rest was for service. You might only pay $199 at the time of purchase... but the other $450 was certainly tucked inside your phone bill.

Or maybe you went for the "free" iPhone. Guess what... it wasn't free at all. Again... the $450 was actually inside your phone bill.

The point is... you ended up paying the full price of the expensive iPhone yourself. There was no "subsidy"

So what's different today? Nothing with regards to the phone. Now you pay $0 down and you just divide the cost of the phone by 24 months. But the service portion of your bill goes down since they're not hiding the misnamed "subsidy" in there anymore.

These two payment methods are the same for a $649 iPhone:

- $199 down and a $19/month "subsidy" for the phone tucked into the rest of your bill
- $0 down and $27/month for the phone plus your service bill

If they could afford an iPhone the old way... they can afford an iPhone the new way.

So if people go for a cheaper Android phone simply because the "subsidies" went away... they need to step back and look at what is really going on.

Well, one difference is that when your contract was up and you didn't get another "subsidized" phone you were still paying the same price with the subsidy payment as part of it even though you already paid it off essentially. Another difference is if you brought your own device or bought one at full price your service still cost the same with the subsidy portion in it even though you weren't using the subsidy in those instances.

That's the stupidest thing I have read recently here! Why would Apple create such tool? Does it really make any sense? Shouldn't be up to Google to create a tool to help iOS users switch to Android?

I would never normally have dreamed of switching to Android.

However, if Apple don't bring out a flagship 4" iPhone, I may consider either getting an Android or a simple dumbphone. With an iPad, I already have plenty of portability and a cohesive ecosystem with my Mac.

Don't wait. Give Android a whirl. You might like it (like I did) and not look back.

You can always come back (brand loyalty is pointless...let the individual product speak for itself).

That said, make an informed decision, as not all Android phones are equivalents.

For me, bigger and flexible is better, so when it came time to renew my work phone I chose a Galaxy Note 5 over a 6s Plus, without thinking twice (been using a Galaxy S4 and greatly enjoyed it), and despite my all-Mac environment at home.

But beware, with Android more choice could equal more complexity.

Exactly. I forgot to mention those aspects. Thank you :)

That makes these new payment plans even better.

I'm shocked that people still think it's bad that "subsidized contracts" are going away.

Android isn't making a switch to iOS app! But noooooo.....no one isn't complaining to them about it. -_____-

Does Android make a "switch to Android" app? I mean that's what they should be doing. I could have imagined that if Apple tried to prevent this that might cause Apple legal problems, but I can't see at all why Apple should have to do the work.

My iPhone syncs to my Mac just fine, has for years going back to the 3GS. I suppose it wouldn't be difficult to get it from the Mac onto an Android from there, if I could be bothered. Which I can't.

Really wonder what you'll do when Android manufacturers start removing their headphone jacks. Because, as history has shown, once Apple does it they won't be far behind.

My MacBook with its one USB-C port is the only one on the market, the competition does not copy all silly moves apple makes. While I can accept using adapters for a laptop, it's not something I will do with a phone.

Why would other manafactures follow apple, when thier units will have advantage over the iPhone by keeping the 3.5mm.

In my case I'll see that the competition has this year, I will not use an adapter on an phone.

This may have been a non issue if wireless music was much better, but at the moment its inferior to wired by some amount . Also the last thing I need is an even smaller battery being depleted by BT.

If you read the original point , the reason in there.

Basically it's cause the EU is butting in, and there are concerns over apple having market dominance. Read the links provided, it's a valid concern apple would want to avoid, hence may agree to such a tool.

Google cannot create a tool to get Your data from Apple......

Note: having read comments on here, many people have not read the original article, and missed the point on why the pressure is on apple, in two words people : markert dominance . EU regulators butting in cause the big telcos are complaining!

I still think it is hilarious and stupid, sorry. It's like a company saying "go and buy my competitors products, I will help you switch platform" Business wise doesn't make any sense and I find it hard to believe there would be iOS users who are desperately trying to move to Android, but they don't know how because there us no "tool" to make it easier for them.

Sadly this is not about the user, it's about telcos shifting handsets and apple avoiding a perceived monopoly....markert dominance, if a crappy tool does that, great.

This is as daft as EU forcing Microsoft to allow users to choose a browser. And yup our politicians are dumb enough to pursue this.

I doubt a tool will sway users.

I thought Android has market dominance in Europe?

Im sure the big telcos are spinning it in a way that our daft politicians are taking notice. Which would not be difficult at all.

Guess someone who owns a huge telco bought too many android premium handsets :p

i switched to Android and gotta admit things are more stable than ever before. No, i am not a troll or anything but i have to give credit where it is due. My Moto X Pure Edition has the best android experience and switching from iOS was a breeze.
Apple should focus on switching Android users to iOS cause that would be a lackluster voyage. Apple trying to create a tool to switch to Android is complete bollocks.

If you're referring to the Telegraph article... how does the iPhone have market dominance?

The iPhone has 17% market share across Europe's top five countries.

Funny... I always heard how the iPhone is NOT dominant because Android has over 4 times the market share. Weird.

Ah I see: "Its popularity among more affluent consumers means operators are dependent on supplies for most of their profits."

Well geez... the iPhone is popular. Is that really Apple's problem? Or the failing of everyone else?

Then the article says "Major European telecoms operators are concerned that only a tiny fraction of customers ever move off the iPhone, in part because of the technical hassle of transferring data."

The telecoms might be concerned... but are there any actual complaints from customers? Perhaps the reason people don't switch from the iPhone is because they actually LIKE the iPhone. It is popular, after all.

So is it only popular because people can't transfer data? Are people forced to buy iPhones for the rest of their lives because they cannot figure that out?

They make it sound like it's impossible to switch to Android. It's not. People do it all the time. If you don't know how... ask someone. It's not exactly a secret.

I just searched and found tons of articles on how to do it. Email, contacts, photos and videos, etc.

Hell... GOOGLE has an article about it on their own website! https://www.android.com/switch/

Frankly... I wouldn't trust ANY app to move from one platform to another. Too many moving parts. I'd prefer to do it all manually.

Thank God! I mean, who the hell wants to switch to Android anyway?

Well vastly more people have Android phones, so I guess ask one of them?

Why?

Irrespective of your views, such tools are good for the consumer.
It's like how hard it used to be to swap banks and keep your old mobile phone numbers.

Consumer protection got laws/rules changed so that companies should help and not obstruct consumers.

Irrespective of your personal views, it should always be seen as good that all companies do all they can to make things better for customers.

WE are the customers.

Just quoting what's in the article, not defending the claims made.

Oh I know.

I, too, assumed people hadn't read the original article. Just wanted to get it out in the open. :D

Fundamental problem is that telcos are greedy, and politicians are dumb .

This might turn into another stupid Windows fiasco where Microsoft had to allow the user to choose a browser with Windows 7, waste of time.
