The Loop reports that Apple has just sent out invitations for a media event scheduled for next week Wednesday, September 12. The event will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM Pacific / 1:00 PM Eastern. The tagline on the invitation is simply "It's almost here."

Apple is of course expected to introduce the next-generation iPhone and give a final preview of iOS 6 at the event. Apple's "iPad mini" is reportedly also nearing a launch, but sources have indicated that Apple is planning a second media event for October to introduce that product. Apple's iPod lineup is also rumored to be seeing an update at one of the two events, while rumored iMac updates and the launch of a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro are likely to appear separately.

There's clearly a "5" in the shadow of the invitation, suggesting that Apple's next iPhone will indeed be called the iPhone 5.

bring it on lets see whats new and cool:apple:

I don't get why the 6th iPhone is going to be called the iPhone 5. It's almost like Apple gave into the fact that everyone called it the 5 because the 4S was before it. Either that or they're considering the iPhone 4S nothing special. I'm glad I got the 4 and not the 4S. I'm so ready for this though.

+1

I fully expected it to be called "the new iPhone."

In retrospect, the iPhone gets major redesign every 2 years, while the mid cycle upgrades have been called "S". Had it been called the "new iPhone", then what do you call the mid cycle refreshed product, "new iPhone S"? It doesn't work, but hey it's all hindsight now (almost).

Anyone seen this yet?

So the sixth iPhone will be "iPhone 5"...

The seventh will be "iPhone 5S".

The eighth iPhone will be the "iPhone 6".

And people really think this makes more sense than simply calling the SIXTH iPhone the "iPhone 6" or "The new iPhone"???

Yes, because nobody but us geeks in these forums count the hardware generations. You really need to grasp that concept and move on.

It's almost here. Means that it is near... wait, Near? Hmmm.

It's almost here. Just a little longer. Wait, Longer? Hmmm.

5. Shadow. Five o'clock shadow. Need to shave. Shave it thin. Wait, Thinner? Hmmmm.

1, 2, buckle my shoe.

Ok, I've got nothing for that one. :D

Almost here.....I hope that doesn't mean something like an october release.

Your system doesn't make sense. The 3GS is a new generation because it added speed but the 4GS wasn't because it added Siri, despite both looking the same as the previous iteration?

Based on your system, it would be more correct to say the 5 is the 4th generation iPhone.

As already said, apple (steve jobs said it) is using the intel tick/tock strategy with iphone (major update / refinement update). So it's simply N° / N°S .

There is no generation involved at all. Simply they started with 3 because it was in 3G and they are going up from there. People (hopefully) doesn't count produc t generations neither spend their time arguing about this stuff. Who cares if iPhone5s is the fifth or sixth or seventh iphone, really?

I am also quite sure that if they should jump a tock (let's say next year iphone will be another major upgrade) they would call it iphone6 (correct for the generation obsessed people) but then the 7° iphone will be 6s and the 8th 7.

The confusion arise only if you start counting how many iphone has been released untile that point, but it's really a ridicolous way to spend time, believe me.

It's called marketing, the 'iPhone' is the product, that little number after it should only read 'marketing' to you. Thus you have:
iPhone marketing
iPhone marketing
iPhone marketing
iPhone marketing
iPhone marketing
iPhone marketing < upcoming release.

Why?

1st gen - Original
2nd - iPhone 3G
3rd - iPhone 3GS.
4th - iPhone 4
4.5th - iPhone 4S
5th - iPhone 5.

Deez not complicated process.

No. Look at model numbers instead.
iPhone1,1 - original iPhone
iPhone1,2 - iPhone 3G
iPhone2,1 - iPhone 3GS
iPhone3,1 - iPhone 4
iPhone4,1 - iPhone 4S

The iPhone 4S changed enough to warrant a new model number. The iPhone 3G did not.

Hahaha, that just complicates things further. What's the part # for the iPhone 5 is iOS?

Or you could see it as changing the number whenever it's good enough (and looks different enough) to call it something new. Maybe that's the naming scheme? Maybe it has nothing to do with generations or the number of devices before it?

Why do people SELL their iPhones/iPads early before the new ones get announced? Seriously?

I have an iPad 1. It was feeling old, so I was going to get an iPad 3 no matter what. But, when it came out, it just didn't impress me enough to shell out $600 or so - (for the 4G model). So, I opted to SAVE that money for another year, and wait for the iPad 4. (My original iPad is still working good, and I'm glad I wasn't seduced by the retina display or front camera or Siri)

I know you can make another $100 or so selling early, but now you're FORCED to get a new phone - be it a new iPhone or Samsung phone or something. But I'm not forced to buy a new phone.

I'm keeping my iPhone 4 until after the announcement. If it's not compelling for me, I'll stick with the iPhone 4 for another year and save MORE MONEY than selling my iPhone now.

I don't live in the USA. I bought an iPhone 4S unlocked and without a contract therefore I paid the full price. In Brazil, where I live, the iPhone 4S costs around $1000. I will go to the US soon for a long time and I knew it would be a good opportunity for me to sell my "old" iPhone, get a good amount ($800) and wait for the new model. That's the reason I sold my iPhone. I did the same thing with my Macbook Air 13 ($1600).. and that's the reason I want a MacBook Pro 13' Retina.
