Apple could have really named it whatever they wanted and it wouldn't change the product.

The iPhone 5 is what the general media, public has been waiting for. Based on the leaks, if apple didn't call it the iPhone 5 and say they simply called it the new iPhone, there would be immediate speculation that apple truly didn't make a new iPhone, but just enhanced the 4s. I believe the iPhone 5 name is apples way of saying this IS the new iPhone, iPhone 5, the one you all been waiting for.

Logically, it makes sense to call it the iPhone 6 since it is really the 6th revision of the phone. Calling it the iPhone 6 would mostly confuse people and most will wonder what happened to the "5". Calling it the 5 also will allow apple to use the 5s name, should they have to again. IMO apple didn't intend to make the 4s, but had to because the model they wanted wasn't ready for release.

I say the "5" shadow is just too obvious. They are pulling one on us. It's gonna be "the new iPhone". There is a different reason for the 5.

More like...
"We have 5 new products for you today, and we are very excited about these. They are great. We think you will be pleased. We are."

or
"We have 5 new features for iOS to show you today, and we are very excited about these. They are great. We think you will be pleased. We are."

OR... It could be because it has 5 rows of icons? Who knows...:apple:

Here is that photo rotated, cropped and zoomed in.... just for kicks. Is it legit, time will tell i guess. If its fake, its a pretty darn good fake at that.

Is the icon below the Calendar, YouTube? Because they are getting rid of that, and thus it wouldn't be included on the box art.

The '5' is of course intentional.

The theory that it's 5 new products is interesting but I believe the stronger guess is that it will be a reference to the iPhone 5 as the name of the next phone.

(Can we please drop the nerd counter that it's the sixth-gen iPhone. The average consumer doesn't know this and more importantly, doesn't care.)

Question: Why would Apple drop the number from the iPad but keep it with the iPhone???

As already said, apple (steve jobs said it) is using the intel tick/tock strategy with iphone (major update / refinement update). So it's simply N° / N°S .

There is no generation involved at all. Simply they started with 3 because it was in 3G and they are going up from there. People (hopefully) doesn't count produc t generations neither spend their time arguing about this stuff. Who cares if iPhone5s is the fifth or sixth or seventh iphone, really?

I am also quite sure that if they should jump a tock (let's say next year iphone will be another major upgrade) they would call it iphone6 (correct for the generation obsessed people) but then the 7° iphone will be 6s and the 8th 7.

The confusion arise only if you start counting how many iphone has been released untile that point, but it's really a ridicolous way to spend time, believe me.

Steve Jobs said that for naming purposes, huh? I don't think the general public can grasp the tick/tock strategy for numbering, but it better be consistent in terms of numbering (as in 5 following 4) for naming purposes.

I know you are being sarcastic, but it's a day earlier than they've announced events in the past. Probably because they want to preempt the other events going on this week.

New iPad event announced on Tuesday Feb 28 right around 12 noon EST/9 AM PST, event on Wednesday March 7, so not entirely unprecedented.

In that leaked printing press photo, what background image is that? Is that the galaxy image like the ones in osx?

That's 'cause, until iOS and siri, the new ipads can't do anything more than the old ones (aside from the camera and camera apps). They just do it MUCH better. Why have a number? It's just an iPad to me.

What's confusing is that they're keeping the numbers for the iPhone on the website, box, etc., but not on the actual phone. Why??

Already answered this. They had iPad mini in development, and are releasing it in the same year. iPad and iPad mini makes sense, iPad 4 and iPad mini 2 does not.

No, iPad dropped naming scheme because Apple had the iPad mini in development and they were going to release it in 2012. iPad and iPad mini makes sense, iPad 3 and iPad mini does not, iPad 4 and iPad mini 2 etc. You get the point. Currently there is only one type of iPhone, and Phones need a naming scheme for marketing purposes more so than iPad etc.

Hmmmm....almost sounds like proof that different sized iPhones are nowwhere in the future.

What if the "5" isnt intended to mean the iPhone 5. I think this would be too obvious for Apple to do. What if it is intended to mean the announcement of "5" new products:

  1. The New iPhone
  2. iPad Mini
  3. iPod Touch
  4. 13" MacBook Pro Retina
  5. iMac

All 5 of these items have been rumored to have updates before and it would make sense! ;-)

My guess is the "5" is there for the five rows of icons now, and five new features of the new iPhone. I still don't think it will be called the iPhone 5. It will be "the new iPhone".

Nah I don't think so - given how much iPhones now dominate the market, I don't think Apple has to worry about incorporating features into the name. It was an issue with the 3G, but not now. Unless something drastic happens with the product line, we can expect iPhone 5, 5S, 6, 6S etc.

It seems iPhone is unique in this way. The iPod, Mac, Apple TV, and now the iPad do not use a suffix on the name. iPhone is the only product they have is using a suffix on the name. I guess you could argue that "OS X" is getting a new cat name each year.

Now, where are the guys who were bitching about the next iPhone being called iPhone 6:rolleyes::p
