Honestly is there anyone really believes that Apple would also introduce iPad mini and share the spotlight with "iPhone 5"......?

no ipad mini, will be the biggest mistake they can make.
you have two flagship, massive money making products, if they share a keynote and are launched at the same time. they wont have as massive as the launch if they were launched at different times, apple loves showing high numbers at launch weekends, if they have two new key items buying for launch weekend sales, they aren't going to be so high, people will be forced to choose,

Just because a huge 5 is present on the image does not automatically mean that Apple will call it iPhone 5. How else are they going to refer to the 5th generation iPhone?

They'll call it the new iPhone.

Clone Marketers?

This 5/6 branding confusion may help knockoff manufacturers sell "myPhone 6" devices that look like iPhone.

Definitely still a possiblity, but I think knowing how marketing departments work, this won't be the case.

LTE, NFC and bigger screen are Apple playing catch up. Nobody gives a crap about the processor. Slim durable body are par for the course in 2012.

Meantime iOS6 looks just like iOS5, except with worse mapping.

It's a yawner of an update, so people argue about the name because there isn't much else to talk about.

The thrill is gone, where's the New New thing?

Maybe you should first see it launched.

Already answered this. They had iPad mini in development, and are releasing it in the same year. iPad and iPad mini makes sense, iPad 4 and iPad mini 2 does not.

Ah, that actually makes sense. Maybe if the iPad Mini weren't coming they would have stuck with numbers with the original iPad. But now the Mini forces the original iPad to ditch a numbers scheme.

The iPhone most likely will never have a Mini version to contend with, so keep numbering the iPhone. My only counter is that LTE iPhone seems like a better choice. We did get the 3G iPhone after-all.

I for one care a **** load about the processor. I could care less if the phone was a rainbow on the back it's going to spend its life in a case.

Gotta say, I have found this thread hysterical this afternoon. Lots of "in your face" commentary from the iPhone 5 corner. The phone isn't even here yet and you're so sure of yourself that you'll welcome any backlash IF (even though maybe the chances are less now) it doesn't get called the iPhone 5. Very brave, very brave indeed. I commend you for your confidence! :D

I always understood the logic of why it COULD be called iPhone 5, but it still has never really made sense to me. There was always a reason for each iPhone's name in the past. The 5 would be the first time that it would just be "because it follows 4".

I also think most of the people that spoke out against calling it the 5 weren't saying it should be called iPhone 6 (which, if you only read today's comments, you would most certainly think so). Most people just thought they would drop the numbering scheme all together or go with a new crafty name.

And hey, I'm fine with whatevery they call it. I'm going to buy it regardless. But, I just have to laugh at the logic behind everyone saying that the iPhone 4 was named that in the 4th generation "by coincidence". lol There is nothing coincidental about it. They named it the iPhone 4 because it was the 4th iteration of the iPhone to be released. Plain and simple. I don't care about chips and whozeewhatsits that made iPhone and iPhone 3G the same phone. (3G also had GPS, if you recall) It was different enough for the public to consider them 2 different phones. The 3G was even confusing then because I believe some people thought that meant it was the 3rd generation. Back then, in google searches, we were still searching for iPods and their accessories as 1G, 2G, 3G and not because it was their mobile internet/data speed but because it was the generation of that product.

And then the iPhone 3G changed everything. I also remember people confusing the iPhone 4 for 4G internet/data. I'd always talk to people that thought their iPhone had 4G. So, all of this talk for making it less confusing by calling it the 5 really doesn't make sense either. Will people now think they have some super "5 times faster than google fiber" 5G internet on their phone? Obviously, I exaggerate. But my point? I really don't have one but I'll attempt to have one.

Calling it iPhone 5, iPhone 6, iPhone infinity, iPhone 2012, iPhone Mega Zulu, "New" iPhone, iPhone, jPhone (why not just go to the next letter?)....it doesn't matter. People are going to be confused regardless. And people are also going to buy it regardless.

But, when all is said and done, this will be the 6th iteration of the phone. That really can't be debated. Well it can, just not in a way that makes sense to the "common folk". (that was in reference to whoever was talking about knowing Klingon 20 or 50 pages back)

Arguing over what the phone was going to be called was fun for the year that we've had to wait for it. Let's all let bygones be bygones and just be excited about the new phone finally being announced next week!

Thank you for your time. :apple:

It will be called the New iPhone!

I predict that it will be called the New iPhone and there will be 5 product lines introduced... of course, unless they call it the iPhone 5. Then all bets are off.

Original iPhone (1)
iPhone 3G (2)
iPhone 3GS (3)
iPhone 4 (4)
iPhone 4s (5)
New iPhone (6)

Ah!

Or

Original iPhone (1)
iPhone 3G (2)
iPhone 3GS (2.5)
iPhone 4 (3)
iPhone 4s (3.5)
iPhone 4s CDMA (4)
New iPhone (5)

I HIGHLY doubt that second one. No way way would CDMA be the 4 and no way would apple admit that the 4s was basically just a minor spec bump, which is exactly what is being suggested in naming the new one the "5"

----------

lol @ the idiots who think it was going to be called the 6.

Yeah, cause you had SO much proof (or still do). Like yours wasn't a blind guess like everyone else's.

I'll bet this happens.

5! :)

I have nothing else to add I suppose, at least without seeming petty. ;)

Rub everyone's noses in it. They deserve it.

It's one thing for fellow forum members to rub it in others' faces but when the website's administration steps in and joins the "I told you so!" crowd, as Arn has so subtly done, I find it to be a little tasteless. -- While bloggers typically aren't held up to the same standards of professionalism that real journalists are, there is a level of unbiased reporting that's expected regardless. After all, this is MacRumors, not Gizmodo.

With that said, I'm surprised Apple did go with the "iPhone 5" name considering this is the 6th generation iPhone, running on iOS 6. I expected them to drop numerical suffix as was done with the iPad.
