LTE, NFC and bigger screen are Apple playing catch up. Nobody gives a crap about the processor. Slim durable body are par for the course in 2012.

Meantime iOS6 looks just like iOS5, except with worse mapping.

It's a yawner of an update, so people argue about the name because there isn't much else to talk about.

The thrill is gone, where's the New New thing?

No - the LTE chip is newer and more efficient. Who knows what Apple has planned for NFC (especially with Passbook) and the bigger screen is still smaller than any of the Androids.....

Just because one handset maker does something first doesn't mean every handset maker after does it EXACTLY the same. Isn't that why we buy different brands? Some people prefer the way Android does the UI, OS, phone design, whatever. Others prefer the way Apple does those things. Yes one maker could "revolutionize" a feature but to say that an iPhone with LTE, faster hardware (which people DO care about, just not consciously), NFC, a bigger screen (with new in-cell tech which adds to overall efficiency of device), smaller bezel, thinner profile, more durable (liquidmetal?) casing, better camera.....as far as iPhones go, this is a BIG update.

If you want to compare it to Android phones out there then by all means. Compare the fact that as soon as iOS6 becomes available, users can download and update their iPhones with it. Compare the fact that it took a HUGE update in Jelly Bean (available on less than 1% of Android devices) called Project Butter to make the UI as smooth as iOS.

Personally, I don't care if Apple waited another year to implement NFC. They will add it to the phone when the tech is efficient enough to not suck down battery life (or cause the need for an enormous battery) and when its ready for mainstream acceptance (NFC still isn't that big in the US at least, which of course is where Apple is headquartered).

I mean you guys are calling for completely NEW technology every year! It doesn't work that way....Buy a phone every two years....it'll save you the emotional turmoil of the new iPhone not being new enough. The words "innovation" and "revolutionary" are thrown around too much (by tech geeks on rumor forums AND by Apple and the handset makers). It took years for smartphones to fully mature and become what they are today....and it will take many more for them to evolve into the next piece of tech we build our lives around.

I think this is appropriate

Well I think this devices named with letters, numbers and simbols are lame. They should come up with something like The ShadowPhone!

In a way, Apple kind of has the advantage by waiting.

What's the number ONE rule of technology? Those who wait, ALWAYS get the better stuff.

At least now when you get it there's a high chance LTE will be in your area. I know it's here in STL! For both VZW AND ATT!:D

A physicist might argue that, technically, it's impossible for a "12" to cast a shadow that looks like a 5.

Nonetheless, it's coming soon!

And that physicist would be wrong. With pointed light, you can case any shadow form with an obstacle. Take the "1," for example. ifyou have a S-line of beams behind it cutting on the corners of the "1," it will be displayed as an invert S. You might end up with a lot of partial shadows but given the right light source with narrow angles, you can definitely do it. And no, I'm not a physicist, I just have a vast interest in technology.

Edit: The easiest way to do the "5" shadow would be an invert, upside-down 5-shaped light source where every beam focusses on a dot casting a shadow smapper than the incoming ray's angle and putting a shadow on the focal point of the light sources.

Are some people on here serious? The shadow looks like a 5? It is a damn 5. It's about as obvious as a very obvious thing that has been made a little more obvious for the terminally dumb.

And of course it means iPhone 5. Cannot actually believe anyone would think otherwise. Obviously the diehard nerds are clinging to their delusions.

Still, should be good next week. Larger iPhone, some great updates and the new iPods will be awesome!!!

What a terrible art job

I'm not an artist, I can't draw stick figures, BUT that art is terrible. There is no way that the shadow of a 12 could look like that.

I get that they were trying to be cute and show their hand a bit, but come on guys there's no way Jobs would have let that fly. Use a better font combination if you want but not like this...

On another note can't wait to hear what's new! :D

5.
Of course, just as I predicted with the 4S last year and everyone thought I was nuts until they unveiled it. This is the pattern folks - get to know it. Generation number, Generation number S, Next generation number. Never for a second did 6 make any sense.

So it will NOT be named "new iPhone" after all

It makes sense.

"iPhone 5" will be the name.

Only iPad needs to loose the number. Think of iPad Mini 2 next to iPad 4 next year? It doesn't work.

Besides, iPhone is on its "tock" this year. Loosing the number from the iPhone would be easier for Apple to do next year on the "tick" in the upgrade cycle.

Call me crazy, but with the 5 being in the reflection and all, could this be far too obvious for the event to cover the iPhone 5?

Surely, Apple will take the same route that they did with the naming scheme of the iPad, with the iPhone.

Could the '5' on the image represent the fifth 'revolutionary' new product that Apple will release. After the Mac, the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad.

Then just announce the new iPhone in October, seeing as September has always been an iPod month.

Just my view, I could be reading way too far into this...

:)

Apple would not announce their "revolutionary new" product in the same event as the iPhone.

How do you know when it comes out, or are you unsure about when your birthday is?

Judging by the accuracy of the leaks and dates...its coming out Sep 21.

So depending on if it actually releases on Sep 21, he might/might have to wait in line.

THANK YOU. Apple didn't all of the sudden realize they didn't have LTE in their phones and say "Oh sh**, Android has LTE we better catch up." They waited for a more efficient LTE chip (the new one from Qualcomm) so they could offer the service to more users (LTE networks are on their way to becoming the norm) while not sacrificing on their precious efficiency (Apple seems to value this above all else - case-in-point the A5X dual core with quad core graphics outperforming the Tegra 3).

LTE is going to be around for a long time before true 5G hits (next 7ish years). It's not like they are adding it only to see something new hit next year...

EDIT: and I'm speaking of the US when I say LTE and norm. I'm aware there are plenty of places around the world who get pissy about the whole Apple+LTE thing.
