"It's" could mean the day itself, not the iPhone.

Hmm... Good point. I simultaneously take back my statement and play devil's advocate and say "it's" is referring to the date.

I was just stirring the pot guys. Geez.

The could of been referring to the date and not the products.

Good point guys.

The new product is called iPhone 4G.

The shadow in a inverted lower case "g"

iPhone 4g is called because it works on the 4G LTE network.

My 2 cents.

LOL

Calling it the new iPhone just like the new iPad does not negate the next one being called the new iPhone or the new iPad either. When someone goes into the store and ask for the new iPhone they are asking for "the newest iPhone". Just like when you go into the store and ask for a MacBook Pro you are asking for the latest MacBook Pro. If you want to get an older one you won't be buying it at the store, you will be buying it online and it will be MacBook Pro 17-inch, Mid 2010 or MacBookPro6,1 or something like that. The iPhones from now on will be referred to by the year they came out and the size of the memory. This will be referred to as the iPhone (2012) from now on - NO NUMBERS MODEL USED. That is Branding. Just iPhone.

really?

Are you all *really* talking about a number? the device name?

You arent more curious about what the actual device will look like or what new features it will have?

The number 5 is more important?

:confused::confused::confused:

Its a 5...

The trouble with 5

I think a lot of Apple rumor addicts are now disappointed and left feeling empty. Nothing more to speculate on. Apple just said "iPhone 5 is coming on the 12th" and that brings about an early rumor bubble deflation with unforeseeable consequences on the order of things in the rumor universe.

Now we have a whole week to attempt to maintain the current inflation level...

This is unprecedented. Seek shelter.

Obviously they are going to re-announce iOS 5.0, they are going all retro and rolling back the OS, next year we'll get iOS 4.0

This is the part where all the people who complained about the possible iPhone 5 design shut up and buy it anyway.

I know I'm going to be crucified for this, but I honestly don't think the 5 is referring to the name "iPhone 5." I think they're releasing 5 products: an iPhone and some combination of new iPods, Macs, or the small iPad. Here's why:

1. The 5 will screw with those of us who are nerdy enough to be on a MacRumors forum.

2. (Here's where I get crucified) Apple is a logical company. They gave the iPhone 4 its name because it was the fourth generation iPhone (after the iPhone, 3G, and 3GS). The 4S is the fifth generation. It follows that they would call this the iPhone 6, or some other name. My money's on The New iPhone though, because otherwise the iPhone line would be the only one with a weird numbering system, which, in my opinion, isn't Apple's style. Not that I'm an expert, just my thoughts.

3. The iPod lineup and the iMac are waaaaaaaay outdated.

4. They have our attention now, don't they?

Of course, I may have put my foot in my mouth and I'll be completely wrong September 12, but that's my guess.

But in the end, it's just the name of a phone. :p

iPhone's numbering system has been wrong or weird since iPhone 3G lol if the iPhone (original) would have just had 3G from the get go the numbering system would have been fine but they skipped 2 and 2s lol it would of been like this if the original iPhone had 3G

1.i(1)phone original (with 3G *if it had it)
2.(1.5)iphone s (spec upgrade)
3.(2)iphone 2
4.(2.5)iphone 2s
5.(3)iPhone 3
6.(3.5)iPhone 3s
7.(4)iPhone 4
Etc and so on.......

We would be on the iPhone 3s right now in 2012 lol

Too many pages/posts to read, I may not be the first person to post this, but I'll get it out there just in case I am (and just to put my theory on record so I can come back later and say "I told you so"). I'm really hoping that there will be some true surprises next week, with one of the big surprises being that the iPhone 5 doesn't look a lot like the leaked photos we've been treated to over the last couple of months. I want a larger screen, and I think I'm even OK with it just being longer and not wider. The 16:9 format makes sense to me. But I'd like to see (and think it's quite possible) an iPhone 5 that is no taller than the existing iPhone 4S (there seems to be a lot of "dead space" above/below the screen of the iPhone 4S already) and a body that's similar to the iPod Touch (and original iPhone - but much thinner). I never liked the iPhone 4/4S hard-edged thin-brick shape. It's just not very comfortable to hold. I prefer the curved back of the iPod Touch. Beyond that, I'm also hoping for at least one other new feature that hasn't been leaked.

Oh, and some changes to the Apple TV content (e.g., lower prices and/or a monthly-subscription model), plus 3rd-party app support. And/Or, a new AirPort Extreme / TimeCapsule with a built-in DVR server and chip that does on-the-fly MPEG2-to-MP4 conversion and either has a built-in CableCard slot or interacts with the SiliconDust HDHomeRun Prime so that you can record shows on your own and stream them to any iOS device (including the Apple TV), including Live TV.

This will make me very happy.

No guys!!! No guys!!!

Don't you get it?! Remember "We're doubling down on secrecy?".
This is just a ruse by Tim Cook to make us think its called iPhone 5!

Us TRUE Apple fans know it'll really be called the iPhone 6.

Steve would never have allowed it to be called iPhone 5.

iPhone 5? Illogical name for the 6th generation iPhone.

Would be a valid argument except that would also make 4S illogical for 5th gen iphone and 3G illogical for 2nd Gen etc....

I don't know what the big deal is, the first 3 iphones didn't follow any numbering order, but then they decided to call the 4th one iPhone 4 as it was the 4th and was also a radical design change.

The 5th iPhone looks exactly like the 4 with only internal changes, so 4S is acceptable. The 6th iphone another radical design change so bumping the number now to 5 makes sense if they are going to follow the precedence they started with the iPhone 4.

There's clearly a "5" in the shadow of the invitation, suggesting that Apple's next iPhone will indeed be called the iPhone 5.

No way will it be called the 5. Regardless of namings it's still the 6th phone.

ESPECIALLY since the 3rd iPad was just called (the new) iPad.

Are there any bookies taking money on this?!? I'm betting that's it's not going to be called the "iPhone 5" (not that they are calling it the 6, we know it's the 6th iPhone).

Plus, iOS 6 is coming out and it'll run on the iPhone 5? Just sounds weird. It'll end up more convoluted than trying to keep track of Windows versions.

It's more likely they've got a 5 inch screen they've been keeping secret or they've got 5 products to release.
Please, everyone focus on the 5-inch screen or 5 products option, because that's the point of this post.
