The government should get out of the marriage business and this would be a non issue.

Also, if taxes were only a sales tax and not based on your marital status this would be a non issue.

Allow for ownership and inheritance be declared at time of acquisition of property. Eliminate the grey area of who is entitled to what on death or divorce.

Issues like this rise up when the government is too involved in your lives. For example, do gays appreciate the fact that their marriages have banned or not recognized in many states for a long time? Well the solution is keep govt out of our lives and make them do as little as possible. You can marry a rock for all anyone cares and it shouldn't be tied to anything or any govt handouts or benefits. Marry who you like, it's about love not tax breaks or benefits right?

tldr: dont make marriage something that is tied to a benefits package. Just make it marriage and let people marry as they see fit. See people as individuals.

since when companies are giving opinions on political subjects ???

just because Cook is gay doesn't mean Apple should support gay marriage

There's a HUGE disparity between real history & progressive history. Your assertion has no basis in fact but it does, however fit the progressive narrative very well. I do seem to recall the progressive French Revolution did slaughter nuns, priests, religious of any faith by the thousands...hmmm
What on earth is "progressive history"?

I've said it many times in public to. Also more than happy to post my views on public domains like Facebook. I don't say one thing in private and another in public like some people. However it's not about me.

We all know Tim Cook is gay. If he feels strongly about this subject he should come out and say so publicly under his own name and not use Apple to issue the statement. That was my point and I stand by it.

He has damaged Apple's brand by associating them with this subject.
Well, Apple is more than happy to lose you as their customer. They don't want their brand to be damaged by being associated with homophobes, you see.

First off

To Apple for taking this stand.

This whole mess is why I think we should follow the model of several European countries, where the government performs civil unions, which grants all the legal rights, but marriage is left to the church.

----------

Same sex marriage started back in the Netherlands back in 2001.

Same-sex marriage (also known as gay marriage) is marriage between two persons of the same biological sex and/or gender identity. Legal recognition of same-sex marriage or the possibility to perform a same-sex marriage is sometimes referred to as marriage equality or equal marriage, particularly by supporters
The first laws in modern times enabling same-sex marriage were enacted during the first decade of the 21st century. As of May 2013, thirteen countries (Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark,[nb 1] France, Iceland, Netherlands,Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, Sweden), and several sub-national jurisdictions (parts of Mexico and the United States), allow same-sex couples to marry. Uruguay and New Zealand have both enacted laws to legalize same-sex marriage which will come into force in August 2013 Bills allowing legal recognition of same-sex marriage have been proposed, are pending, or have passed at least one legislative house in Andorra, England and Wales, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Nepal, Scotland, and Taiwan, as well as in parts of Australia, Mexico, and the United States.

Introduction of same-sex marriage laws has varied by jurisdiction, being variously accomplished through a legislative change to marriage laws, a court ruling based on constitutional guarantees of equality, or by direct popular vote (via a ballot initiative or a referendum). The recognition of same-sex marriage is a political, social, human rights and civil rights issue, as well as a religious issue in many nations and around the world, and debates continue to arise over whether same-sex couples should be allowed marriage, be required to hold a different status (a civil union), or be denied recognition of such rights. Allowing same-gender couples to legally marry is considered to be one of the most important of all LGBT rights.

Same-sex marriages can be performed in a secular civil ceremony or in a religious setting. Various faith communities around the world support allowing same-sex couples to marry or conduct same-sex marriage ceremonies; for example: Quakers, U.S. Episcopalians, the Metropolitan Community Church, the United Church of Christ, the United Church of Canada, Buddhism in Australia, Reform and Conservative Jews, Wiccans, Druids, Unitarian Universalists, and Native American religions with a two-spirit tradition, as well as various progressive and modern Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and Jewish groups and various minor religions and other denominations.

Do you honestly believe that once gay marriage is allowed everywhere, we are all going to run to the Churches that have been actively trying to withhold our rights and force them to marry us?

You personally? Based on what you just stated, I don't think you will. Will all other pro homosexual marriage groups agree with you? I doubt it.

Aside from the vocal bigoted minority, today's news and the support from so many here have reignited by faith in humanity. Thank you everyone who has boldly supported equal rights for everyone, not just the LGBT community. :)

Happy Wednesday everyone!

I love seeing the same old liberal crew "come out" and post on topics such as these, but you will never see them in the regular apple thread discussions. I wonder if some of them even own apple products...

Funny thing is I rarely if ever post on my political viewpoint. (Most of my recent posts here are about T-mobile...I don't think they're a religion or political party). But today the world changed for me. Even though my State recently legalized same sex marriage, and even though my partner of 23 years and I already went and got a marriage license on the first day they were being issued, I still felt ambivalent about the prospect of getting married since it would not be a "real" marriage in the federal government's eyes and would most likely just open up a world of hurt in tax and financial planning for us. But now we can look forward to our marriage finally being fully equal. It's a great day.

As a customer since my first Mac in the summer of 1987 while in my freshman year of college, to the Mac SE, to the si, to a break of several years before the comeback of Apple with the iPod (shuffles, mini, 3 nanos, 2 touches), iPhones 4 & 5, iPad, iPad 2 and iPad mini, and on my 3rd Mac mini, I think I also qualify as an owner of Apple products.

And I'm happy to see Apple's support on this issue.

This honestly makes me feel like ditching being an Apple fan...

Draw a line down the middle of a sheet of paper. Label the left side, why I hate gays and label the right side, why I loves my Apple products. State your reasons and report back soon.

Since God was a child. Companies have always had a major say in politics, have you ever heard of 'pay to play'? Let me put it for you this way, NONE of your elected officials made it mainstream without the support of a company, starting with Obama to your local mayor.

It's the same thing. If you have freedom not to practise a religion in particular, you have freedom not to follow any.

The issue is that these days many people use freedom of religion to silence religious expression, which was not the intent of the freedom. It certainly goes against common sense as well... We have the freedom to practice what we choose, but we don't have the freedom to silence those who choose to practice something we don't choose. A lot of people have trouble with this concept unfortunately.

Good news for haters, Westboro Church is developing a computing platform in secret, so you will soon have a choice.

The bad news is, it puts a "God hates f@gs" watermark over everything you print out from it. Well, I guess "bad news" depends on who you are...

So, in the states where gay marriage is legal, I assume there was a flurry of gays forcing churches to marry them?

It's an unrealistic argument designed to make the victimizer feel like he/she is the victim.
