I've owned every version of the iphone and even stood in line for the latest and greatest. I won't even upgrade to iOS6 until maps is fixed it's an essential app for me. I seriously doubt Apple can get to Google Maps quality in less than a year.

I've just come across an entry for a pub that closed over 15 years ago. Where are they getting this data from?

And for real fun, try searching for Newport. Which one does it default to? Not the major city and port in South Wales. Not the notable town on the Isle of Wight. Not even the reasonably sized town to the north-east of Telford. No, it returns the Essex village of that name. Arrggghhhhh!

You are always right in the programming forum! Even when you are allocating 5 bytes of memory to save space. :)

If you've noticed, I don't argue with people when I'm wrong in the programming forum, I accept and move on. ;)

And it's not like we're working with a GS3 here, 5 bytes is 5 bytes! (And that's 4 bytes to you, so as to align on a word boundary for efficient in 32 bit architectures like ARM).

It must serve the results based on your location because I get the Newport in Shropshire (25 miles away) as my search result.

Ive been with apple for a good 8 years now. Im not brainwashed. Im pissed off!

You have a right to be and should be.

I wasn't implying you were brainwashed. My point was some were saying how they thought maps was great. I just find it funny that some people can find no fault with Apple. It's frankly frightening and cult like.

Maybe apple scraped POI info from google and they noticed. Then send IP addresses belonging to apple "screwed" data :)

yep

It's like finding no fault with google or Samsung or android. The same people exist on both sides.

Does all seem a bit of a silly thing to do, let's be fair it's not a bad first attempt it just doesn't compare to a far more mature product.

you are also brainwashed. this all wouldn't be a problem if they wouldn't have removed Google Maps. But now you basically don't have a really good alternative anymore.

google maps on ios was crap anyway. totally useless for navigation, only to look things up

I bet Tim went "Steve" on their asses. :D

----------

By the way, the mobile version of maps.google.com still works great, if you REALLY need to use Google Maps.

have reported a few problems in my local area, Northeast US, but haven't come across any major issues like others are reporting. not saying they aren't valid gripes, but just that it's been ok for me

If that were the case it should pick up Newport in East Yorkshire, as that's by far the closest to me!

If Steve Jobs were alive - this is what would have gone down this week...

"Can anyone tell me what Apple Maps is supposed to do?"

A team member would reply "To show you where you are. To navigate to a destination?"

Jobs would shoot back: "So why the **** doesn't it do that."

It's more than blind, it's stupid.

They're literally going to have to start again in the UK. The POI data is junk.

That's going to take at least 4 years to get it anywhere even close to usable.

Apple's not driving around doing the mapping. Considering they're probably seeing huge numbers of reported problems in the UK, they could just re-source the data from another provider.

Nobody in their right mind should be saying this is anywhere near Google Maps, and obviously that's a big problem, but it is possible to turn around some drastic improvements quickly.

As one (probably rare) counter-example, my hometown has better coverage in iOS6 than on Google Maps, and the satellite images are much better quality and about 2 years newer.

There was an issue with the antenna, hence why they fixed it in the 4S design by changing the way it works. And Siri and still is a big gimmick sorry. I've pretty much given up on it, never use it anymore at all.

Incorrect - there was a perceived issue with the antenna design, it was not actually a real issue. That was backed up by actual dBm readings at the time.

The maps issue on the other hand is a REAL issue, backed up by hundreds of real examples.

Integrating a new POI database itself would take months and months, even if one was easily available (which it isn't).

It was a real issue. You can try to rationalize it all you want. Real issue.

Maps - another real issue.

A company, like Apple, shouldn't release something "beta" replacing a core/popular function of a smart phone.

Siri being in beta is silly. But it didn't replace anything. It was a new addition. Nothing "lost."

The phone will still sell millions. But they are going to get bad press for awhile about this. And rightfully so.

If this news was about a Windows, Android, Nokia or other phone - it would be a FIELD day in here.

The Google maps app will be approved, and the maps app will be relegated to a folder on screen 3 like the stocks app.

There's certainly a good chance of that happening in the UK but it seems like it's much better in the states. I'm in Southern California and it has some issues, but it's pretty good actually. I know there are issues in the States as well.

LOL, you obviously were badly influenced by the mis-information from the mass media.

I on the other hand uses science and maths to work it out.

The antenna design improved upon previous designs in its original form. That is a fact.

If you managed to force a drop out by holding the phone in a particular spot, then that call would have not even occurred on the previous design.

That is - again, the antenna issue was a perceived reduction in quality, not a real one.

Not comparable at all to the real actual demonstrable flaws in the new map system.

Why would it take months? There is nothing special about a POI database, just business information, address, and coordinates. I'm seeing search results from Yelp that don't show up on the map itself, so that is another source for populating and checking the maps.

Also, if I owned a restaurant/boutique/etc, I would be making sure my Yelp listing was up-to-date now, and reporting any problems to Apple. It's basic SEO, and I have done the same with Google in the past. Come to think of it, that's probably where much of Google's information came from in the first place.

Actually - an email from Steve to me was one of few that started the fire. You're welcome.

Real issue. I had it. Several people had it. As opposed to other phones - it wasn't just a reduction is signal - it was complete loss. A case solved the issue. Guess what - I didn't have that issue in any of my iPhones before and I don't have it now with a case on my 4 nor on my Samsung Skyrocket without a case - no matter how much I try)
