How many times will it take for Apple to mess up before its legion of fans look at them as the company they are vs the fantasy they hold?

I'm not saying Apple isn't a good company. I'm just curious how long this halo effect can/will last.

It'll last until Apple is bankrupt. Simple as that.

Me, together with so many other people, have been rooting for Apple even in the 80's when Apple was coming up with crappy products over and over. Today's Apple is not an underdog anymore. Today, even their worst products are multitudes better than what they were putting out back then. So you must be really on crack if you think people will actually abandon Apple today, regardless of some bad releases they put out.

Why do you care what ppl think of apple? Do you own stock in a competitor?

I'm just trying to wrap my head around why it matters to you if Apple has fans?

Maybe you missed the post I was replying to.

Who says that I care?

Who says it matters?

It was a question.

but you said "I'm just curious", yet that means you don't care? You weren't expecting an answer to your question, because you don't care and you were basically talking to yourself?

Weird...

Yes. Curiosity does not equal that I care one way or the other. Nor does it mean I didn't expect an answer.

I can be curious what people ate for dinner. That doesn't mean I care. Nor does it mean I wouldn't expect an answer.

Weird that you don't understand.

Why did you answer me? It was just a question. I don't care what your answer was. Please don't do that again.

I love that the word curiosity comes from the Latin "to care" lol. But no, asking a question doesn't necessarily mean you care about the answer :rolleyes:

Maps is terrible

I want google maps back. I used the new iOS6 maps yesterday to navigate to 2 known places. It was off by 5 miles to one location and 1 mile on the other. This is not acceptable.

Obviously they new about all of the issues. They aren't stupid. For whatever reason, they decided to go ahead and release it anyway. You may say that it was a stupid idea to release it, but you can be sure they new what they were doing.

Interesting thought. They did the same last year with Siri. I wonder if they think the iPhone is so popular that they're fire proof or that it simply won't hurt the sales. Clearly they're trying to hit back at Google but I can't believe this is the way to do it. They pretty much winged it with Siri and got away with it so maybe they think they can do the same with the Maps. Judging by the lines around the world maybe they are right.

Steve was a perfectionist. I find it hard to believe he would have let this happen. Sometimes I think Tim et al should ask themselves "what would Steve do?" then maybe we wouldn't have problems like this. Am I the only one who really doesn't like the way Tim is changing things at Apple?

1) apple will fix it
2) Google will submit their maps so you can get them back OR
3) use another alternative like waze, which is better then both

Why are people acting like this is the end of the world?

You must be jesting. Nokia has worse satellite imagery than Apple!
Nokia's maps are accurate though. It's the same data Garmin uses so it will make a good satnav.

I have never used Satellite imagery once on my iphone... after all its just a tool get me from point to point B.

In any case, waiting for Lumia 920 is looking better and better. For spite, google should have said screw it and made google maps exclusive to android. Probably would have stolen a tiny market share if apple doesnt get its act together.

I never used a turn by turn app before because I never needed one, but aren't Waze and Mapquest actually free and were better than the old map app in the first place?

Well, we cannot know if Google would lose or win revenue if they follow that option. Stealing a tiny marketshare vs stop receiving ad revenue from Apple (if they release an app for iOS 6, it'll either be paid (less likely) or will have ads).

Yes they are. This is much ado about nothing. It's not like you're locked into using apple maps. It's about choice. Isn't that the mantra, on the Android side? Lol.

Steve released mobile me. Steve released FCPX. Steve was a perfectionist, yet he couldn't control all the aspects of all releases. All he did was fire people responsible as quickly as possible when he deemed fit.

This is officially the first major Apple screwup since SJ passed away. Schiller and Forstall are a bunch of bozos for releasing this POS that clearly wasn't ready to replace Google Maps.

A lot of people are assuming that Apple drove the timing of this release. It very well could have been Google.

My guess is that the bundling contract was up for renewal and Google said something like:

1. Pay more this time,
2. No new features,
3. No better API access.

So, it is very plausible that Apple would have been forced pay more for the same stagnant Maps app that would not allow the increased location services integration they are pushing for, or they could call Google's bluff. I think they bit the bullet. I bet they would have much rather partner with Google, but that would require Google stop being a hostile partner.

Google sells phones. Google Maps is one of the biggest marketed S/W features on Android phones. Apple's Google Maps royalties are gravy for Google. Google had no reason to improve the Maps app, and every reason not to. The data is shared by all Google Maps products, or I bet that would have been degraded, too.

Or 4 Google was tired of taking the blame for the lack of features in the Map App and how crappy it was compared to the web.

True, Apple maps data collection is not even close to the accuracy of google, and not sure if it will ever be. However, from experience in the software industry... Nothing is ever great the first time. Apple maps probably needs another year of maturity until the very noticeable bugs are deceased. This is a huge huge software project, so is it's current state really that surprising?

On A positive note, Apple has a proven record in software and data collection development. The company is also very healthy, very hungry, and very quick to customer problem resolution. We can expect improvements soon...

IMHO of course.

If they were tired of it, they would have released a full featured map app 3 years ago. :) I bet they were always quite happy with it that Android had a much better map app.

Just had a quick look at my local area. It has catering spots all over the place that are wrong. It seems where a street name appears in two separate cities the map is plotting the restaurant everywhere that street name occurs even when it is in a residential street. How could such a huge flaw have happened. Very poor indeed.

We've already been told before that Apple's contract with Google for iOS prohibited Google from launching competiting iOS apps.

Which is why for example with YouTube Google built a better web interface years ago, but couldn't launch a native app until Apple's contract expired.

I know for a fact that the YouTube mobile team were furious about how much **** they got over the iOS YouTube app and that they couldn't do anything about it.

I'm sure Google didn't want to lose being the default maps on iOS. Google make their living from user data and iDevice users will make up a huge part of that database.

The fact that Google's native app is ready to go and it's simply up to Apple to approve it shows they are very keen to stay.

I reckon Apple are trying to manipulate things how they want them here, at the expense of end users and Google.

The latest intel states that NO Google App has been submitted.

Then they should have given Apple permission to use every map API available so Apple's own solution didn't make people cringe at it. In any case, we are looking at the product of a failed partnership. But as many have pointed out, there are better free alternatives to Apple maps. If all good alternatives were paid, then I'd say people have a reason to whine.

In any case there are free apps available which are much better than Apple maps right now. And some say they are better than the old Google maps on iOS anyway, although I can't vouch for it.
