I've noticed a few new things.

1. The recent items list is now more compact. You can no longer have different numbers of recent items for documents, apps and servers.

2. Preview seems to have iCloud integration now, Maybe this could be used to store images more permanently than Photo Stream?

3. New sharing optons in Preview. I think Flickr, add to iPhoto and add to Aperture are new.

4. Launchpad is missing most of my applications, and it looks pixelated, or blown-up. I can't pinch to reduce the size of the icons.

Where do you want me to go and bitch about Apple UI design choices? Obviously on Apple forums right?

Nobody said you couldn't "bitch" here. Just don't be surprised if people don't agree with you, is all. Especially where aesthetics are concerned.

I don't find the helvetica a problem, but I'm not a huge fan of the Skeuomorphism (at least on OS X. Don't mind it as much in iOS) and think iOS style sliders have no place in a mouse-oriented OS. Apple's icon design has been going downhill lately--I have way too many blue circles in my dock! By far my biggest complaint is the greyscale trend, as previously mentioned. Not only is it less attractive, but it hampers usability by making the icons less easy to distinguish.

That said, there are some trends that I do like: iOS-style popovers and scrollbars, and the use of the linen texture to create a sense of depth.

Oh good, someone who has never used a feature commenting on how said feature should go away.

iWork's Auto Save is a compelling reason to use Office? Really?

You do realize how auto save works don't you? Oh right, you're still on 10.6.8.

Cool down there, boss. I've been using OS X Lion off and on since it's release (when I say off and on I mean for a month or so at a time). Duplicating your file adds more steps than doing a simple Save As. The Mac users I talk to who dislike OS X Lion, dislike it for various reasons, but the lack of Save As is always one that nears the top of their list.

It's not so much the Auto Save that bothers me, it's the lack of Save As. But if having Auto Save means not having Save As, I'd rather simply not have Auto Save.

Agreed, removing the colour has really made an impact on how I use Finder and iTunes. If there was only thing I could change about ML, that would be it.

Doesn't the 'export' option work almost entirely the same as the 'save as' option?

EDIT: It certainly does not in keynote... my apologies if it is the same in the other iWork applications.

Now reinstate 'Save As' and do away with this stupid 'Save a Version/Duplicate' crap and I'd upgrade from 10.6.8 in a heartbeat.

Option key.

I've been using iWork for years and I see Auto Save and Versions as a very compelling reason to use Microsoft Office.

In what way does having Auto save and Versions impede you? These features are a godsend for the vast majority of people.

They have improved this slightly in ML. When you duplicate a file the menu bar highlights and you can change the name right there.

Expose in 10.6 is already wrong. Last really useful Expose was in 10.5. In 10.6 they added windows scaling, which is disorienting (big Safari window is displayed in the same size as little download window, making it hard to quickly find the one I'm looking for). Mission Control in Lion was in fact a step in right direction: windows aren't scaled any more. And now in ML it's back to the old, real Expose: not scaled windows, all visible at the same time.

Can't wait for the release!
I have started with Mac from 10.6.1 so I'm sorry but I didnt experience 10.5 personally :)

I agree. I'd also like to see color added back to scroll bars when they are set to "Always" show. It's incredibly hard to tell what the active window is by the scroll bars (In SL active windows had blue scroll bars and inactive had clear). It also blends in too much with the background, so looking for the scroll bar out of the corner of your eye is impossible. I think simply darkening the scroll bars to a darker gray for the active window would solve a lot of this.

Option key.

Not sure what you're talking about here, unless you're talking about a feature exclusive to Mountain Lion. I just tried holding down Option in Pages on my 2011 Mac mini and Duplicate (and all other items under File) didn't change to Save As.

I guess I should have clarified my original post...
If having Auto Save and Versions means having Duplicate instead of Save As, then for me (and others I talk to), it's not worth it.

I'm going to echo the greyscale complaints. The OS feels much less "friendly" with everything so grey. It looks more Adams Family than Apple.

So true! There already is a dropdown box for appearance, right as the first item in the first icon in System Preferences. Awkwardly, it only changes the stoplight to Graphite. Why can't we have all the other colors back? And who - except really focused professionals - has actually changed their stoplights to Graphite? I'd be willing to bet that it is by far the minority of OS X users that find UI colors so distracting.

I'm happy to hear all the improvements going on in ML, especially with regards to mission control. Looking forward to installing it!

Just noticed that there is no longer an eject button next to disk images (eg when installing Xcode). You have to secondary click, then click 'Eject'.
Can't think of a reason why they'd remove the icon.

Are you referring to the Eject sign over the Trash icon?

No, I meant the eject icon next to disk images, at the bottom of finder's sidebar. But it must have been a one-off thing, because the eject button is there now.

There's one thing I have started to hate about Apple - Bad UI design.

I mean - we have great UI experts at Apple and some of the UI elements on OS X and iOS are just so bad-looking.

Just look at the volume bar or status bar on iOS, notification centre on iPad and OS X, now this switch button with the exact same UI from iOS, the whole final cut pro in helvetica.

There's something wrong going on in 1 Infinite Loop. Apple needs to come up with much more innovating and better looking UI designs even those these ones solve a purpose and do it just fine. It's all we Apple geeks have craved for years - great UI design and its implementation.

EDIT: Apple needs to fix the font in the notification centre on OS X- Helvetica is not suitable for low PPI displays running OS X and it looks crippled.

NeXTStep's base font for all menus was Helvetica. I love it.

If Apple is still developing Mountain Lion, do you think they will still make desktop computers? Or are we to work from our iPads and iPhones? :p:p:p **** Release the new desktops already! The current Mac Pro makes Windows 8 and a custom build workstation with endless expandability look good.

Can anyone tell me if Parallels works ok on Mountain Lion?

Yes. Parallels v7 works absolutely fine on Mountain Lion. You may have to reinstall the Parallels Tools after installation - that seems to iron out the slow speed issue.

Also, Parallels just released v8 Beta specifically for Mountain Lion. I have installed it and it works just as fine. I have not noticed any new features in Parallels 8; but then I hardly use Parallels (maybe once a week for Visio diagrams).

My biggest gripe with ML so far is actually with Safari dropping the option for 'Activity' under window. I used that thing a ton and now it's gone.

Option to ungroup windows is now in Mission Control preference pane. This should make a lot of people happy.

Let's hope so. Thank god it's an option, those of us who realise Mission Control isn't supposed to be a "window" switcher can continue using it as it was intended without the god awful mess that is "all window expose".

I don't understand the big deal regarding Expose functionality. On my trackpad, flicking down with four fingers reveals all the windows of the active program, and flicking up enters Mission Control. What does ML bring back?
