Toasters are annoying. Why? Because everyone that has access to that framework is going to want to tell you when anything happens with their app. The problem is that you're going to find maybe 10% of that actionable or useful most of the time. Ask Windows users how they feel about toasters.

They can be useful– it's usually work to pare down what you see. If this ends up being anything like iOS, every app you install will want to slam you with an alert. It's the 'ole "ask forgiveness, not permission" mentality. I have a feeling the "do not disturb" setting will be used a lot.

I don't understand...you can already spread all the individual app windows apart in Mission Control with a swipe gesture. You can also app Exposé by double tapping on an app's dock icon.

Am I missing something?

Yes.

Example:
If you're looking about PDFs/Pics in Safari (with multiple windows opens), and you have multiple Preview open (with PDFs/Pics), you may not know which application contains the pic/PDF you're looking for that instant.

In Mission Control, if you have multiple windows of the same app open, it stacks them (it covers windows) and you can't see all the windows. So my 3 Safari windows and 5 Preview windows aren't all viewable when I activate Mission Control. Yes, I can hover over each app to spread them out, but that's just an extra unnecessary step.

In all windows-expose, it shows every window of every app. Therefore, you don't need to know which app contains the PDF/Pic you were looking for; all your windows are viewable with one gesture.

Bottom-Line: If you don't understand why they added this option, then don't worry about it - this new option doesn't affect you. For everyone else, we can personalize our workflow a bit better with 10.8.

From using iMessage (beta) in Lion, it seems to be working okay. However, I don't use it often. In fact, I will never use it often until Apple gives us the opportunity to set our Caller ID to our phone numbers on the Mac and iPad. I don't want to be sending messages through my email address and starting a second thread with half my contacts!

I don't seem to have this problem, unless I misunderstand you? I use my Apple ID as caller ID on my MBP and MP; and on the phone I use my mobile number. All message 'threads' are synced across all my devices including read/unread messages. The problem with numbers as caller IDs is that you can't send a message through the phone network on a computer, unless you're connected to 3G/4G.

It is annoying that the app doesn't tell me if a message has failed due to the recipient not having 3G/WiFi connection - and therefore never gets my message as my computers can't send as text if delivery fails.

Cool down there, boss. I've been using OS X Lion off and on since it's release (when I say off and on I mean for a month or so at a time). Duplicating your file adds more steps than doing a simple Save As. The Mac users I talk to who dislike OS X Lion, dislike it for various reasons, but the lack of Save As is always one that nears the top of their list.

It's not so much the Auto Save that bothers me, it's the lack of Save As. But if having Auto Save means not having Save As, I'd rather simply not have Auto Save.

Agreed. I do not mind in Aperture, but it is annoying in Preview.

I use Preview mainly for viewing PDFs downloaded from web. When I find the document interesting, I want to save it to my folders (Save As - one shortcut). Instead Lion pushes me to Duplicate (no shortcut!) and Save.

I would really appreciate to have Save As back or at least have some kind of "Move this file to..." which would in such situation take the file from Downloads to location I select. Plus shortcut please!

Yes, Mountain Lion now switches to "Save As" when you use the option key in the menu (or simply option-cmd-shift-s).

Oh bless you.... I've submitted feedback for that exact behavior to Apple probably a dozen times since Lion's release. I think Duplicate and "save as" both have their place, but for my workflow "save as" generally is more efficient.

This is good news, and this one change alone would make me pay for the ML upgrade, and if Mission Control has options to help it behave a bit more like the old spaces that would make ti double worth it to me.

This is great. I hope this means someone will make a hack that will have Save As by default, and hold down option to get Duplicate :)

Also, I echo the lack-of-color sentiment. When everything is grey, it's boring. Also, it's that much more difficult for my eye to catch what I'm looking for, which is the whole point of icons. On the Finder sidebar, I now have to look for the word "pictures" when looking for my pictures folder. Before, it was easier to identify it by it's icon. It's the little things that make an OS pleasant to use, or not.

I miss this look:

Well, both of these options are present now so you should be covered :)

to me Snow Leopard had the perfect balance of color. The window gradients werent too dark or too bright (Lion). And of course it still had the color icons in the sidebar.

I too miss the old days of OS X minus the brushed metal

Oh seeing this brings back so many great memories. I do miss the old OS X, but i do enjoy OSX Lion and I'm really looking forward to OS X Mountain Lion, especially with more iCloud integration and more uniformed apps that are cross platformed, well sorta ;):apple:

This bug was in the original preview 3. I found it so annoying that i reinstalled preview 1 yesterday.

Issues I have found from Preview 3 [non update]:

1. Flash videos. you could click on a video let it try to load, it would play the sound, then the video would flake out, and freeze my whole system. I would have to force a reboot.

2. Spaces. I always have certain apps locked to certain spaces. However in preview 3, it seemed they ignored that rule, and loaded all my apps in the same space. The only fix i found is if you loaded each app one at a time, then it would slowly figure out were it was to go.

3. Safari. Safari has become very fast but also a hinderance. I'm the type of person that always has open 7 or 8 tabs open at once. However, in the latest build, I often have to 'force to reload' all the tabs. While looking at one tab, the others seem to forget what was on the page, or have some kind of a memory dump [??], and have nothing but white space when you go back it.

4. Mail. Apples's mail program seems to want to keep all mail, even though i tell it to delete old emails in a conversation. This probably has something to do with googles settings?? but i have checked and both my work, and gmail use IMAP, and should delete off the server when i hit delete... however some emails keep coming back. Also it always seems like mail has duplicates of emails that it finds, it looks like I delete the same email two or three times a lot.

Just some of the bugs i have found.

Re Mail: Trash does not work properly in Lion either. Only way is to drag the messages into Trash folder of Gmail Folder. Also it is necessary to set trashed messages to be deleted, not archived. Annoying. I guess it is because Google wants to keep your personal data as long as possible and also motivate you to buy extra GB of space. I moved from google.

On top of that Nail uplicates most of messages in Lion.

Well, this is my set up: ("Device - Caller ID")
iPhone - Mobile number. All message threads sent with Mobile Number
iPad - Apple ID: No threads started from Apple ID
Mac - Apple ID: No threads started from Apple ID

Upon opening iMessage, I do not see any threads which have been sent with my Mobile number as my caller ID. In order for these threads to sync across, I would need to change everything to sending from Apple ID.

I am saying that I would like to set my caller ID as my mobile number, on my Mac and iPad. Then, I could continue to send iMessages (which don't need mobile network - unless backing up to SMS) in the same pre-existing threads which I have started on my iPhone.

Hope this makes sense, it's hard to explain without a visual.

Except every app on iOS that wants to send notifications has to ask permission. :)

You can add keyboard shortcuts to any menu command that you want.

Hey mate, I think I've got same setup as you except that I also have my Apple ID (email) on my phone, which keeps the thread structure synced and intact. Have you tried that?

Well, my MBP randomly went black and needed a reboot so I'd say there's still some nasty issues before release time. Also noticed that Messages is maturing, the main messages window has been enhanced showing statuses for other chat services. Also, the app will quit when all windows are closed.

Yeah, should have mentioned that. This is my setup on my iPhone (note that my Caller ID is set to my mobile number):

Same account on iPad, Mac. However only threads which are sent via my Apple ID on my iPhone, show up on these other devices.

Have you had this problem since ? I have had the same issue 5 times today now, I'll be working away when the screen flashes black then the screen is locked displaying what was there before the flash. It's only a display problem though because I can still play itunes, close itunes etc and close apps via keyboard shortcuts...wierd.

I'm not sure if this is Chrome Beta related as that was running everytime.

I'm running a 2 month old i7 17" MBP

No, but it did happen when I opened a new Chrome window. Wouldn't be surprised if it's related to graphics card switching.

I really hope they start offering major OSX updates for free like they do with major iOS updates... like how we didn't have to pay for iOS 4 or iOS 5, etc.

If they're bent on creating a similar platform between iOS and OSX, and also on releasing a new major OSX every year, then I think this would be the fairest and most logical thing to do: to offer Mountain Lion as a free update to those who have Lion.

Come on - is the usual $29 really too much for you? You want Apple to have a revenue stream for this, otherwise they might limit enhancements in the future. Also, no one has to take every update. I didn't take Lion because one of my important photography apps won't work with it.

Question.

I'm new here, so I have a question.
Can I use this preview if I have developer account but not paying anything?
*my english is not good, sorry

I'm afraid not. You will need to be part of the Mac Developer Program, which requires a purchase (I can't remember, but I think it's around $99).

LOL your English is great. Probably far better than the few words I can utter in your native tongue.

Free Developer accounts do not enable Preview Release or Betas. We just get access to some Developer resources.

Or perhaps they just disagree with you. After all, this is an Apple-oriented forum, so one could safely assume that most users on here enjoy the look and feel of Apple products.

Well the negative votes make it obvious that they disagreed! I have to agree with @dethmaShine though, there certainly seems to be a LOT of people on this site who will just blindly disagree with anything negative, even if it is constructive.

PS. I don't mind the tile based UI, but the fact you just switch back to the old W7 UI is pretty disappointing. It doesn't make sense why you boot up into tiles mode only to have to revert back 'for anything serious'.
