Hey mate, I think I've got same setup as you except that I also have my Apple ID (email) on my phone, which keeps the thread structure synced and intact. Have you tried that?
I have my Apple ID (email) setup on my phone too, but the problem is your friends have to text your Apple ID and not your number in order for it to get pushed to your iPad/Mac.

Even if they have an iMessage capable device, them texting to your number won't sync... which is a big disadvantage.

Obviously, you can tell all your friends to message you at your Apple ID, but that can be a hassle. Plus, if they're not running iOS, it's moot.

I really like the idea of being able to send/receive from all my devices, but the fragmentation makes it annoying (most people I text don't have iOS, unfortunately)

I like the do not disturb feature. I can imagine people not wanting to use or maybe not be bothered much with the notifications.

I really hope they start offering major OSX updates for free like they do with major iOS updates... like how we didn't have to pay for iOS 4 or iOS 5, etc.

If they're bent on creating a similar platform between iOS and OSX, and also on releasing a new major OSX every year, then I think this would be the fairest and most logical thing to do: to offer Mountain Lion as a free update to those who have Lion.

Indeed. 30 bucks a pop is a nice bonus for Apple but even then you're only talking 30 dollars a year per person who upgrades. Many people are still using SL.

OS X updates give Mac users new tools and improvements. Apple doesn't want fewer people upgrading; it wants more.

LOL your English is great. Probably far better than the few words I can utter in your native tongue.

Free Developer accounts do not enable Preview Release or Betas. We just get access to some Developer resources.

Well that's not 100% accurate. I have been invited to beta test some applications and resources on my free account. Had to sign a NDA and everything. But it was never on the level of the OS or anything like that. That you defiantly need to be paid up.

I don't think that's the case. IMO most people who are staying with SL aren't doing it because of cost - after all they paid the same amount for SL in the first place in many cases. Usually in many cases it boils down to 4 things:

1) Insufficient bandwidth (and the USB key is too much)
2) Compatibility with software that requires Rosetta or is incompatible with Lion
3) They don't like Lion period.
4) Old hardware that won't run Lion well.

People have been willing to pay $120 per upgrade up until SL. I don't think making it free is going to change much after cutting the price by $100. And this assumes that they can - they may not be able to do so due to accounting rules.

This needs to be in iOS! I hate getting a bunch of notifications when I'm busy. Maybe iOS 6 will have do not disturb in notification center :D

Safari URL bug fixed

One bugI found in DP3 was as you typed a URL or Search in Safari, it would pause every 5th or 6th character. While not too intrusive it was annoying to say the least. This has vanished with the update.

i miss this look:

It was amazing at the time, and there’s nothing wrong it, but look at how far we’ve come…

I can't believe there's a single person who isn't upgrading due to bandwidth. I mean which ISP limits the bandwidth that much that one can't even download 3 GB's? Even most 3G offers have more limit nowadays.

The download is at least 4 gigs. For many on slow DSL or even dial-up that can take forever. Also there are people that cannot afford to use up an entire months service on one thing.

And there are people that don't have reliable internet period. They do exist. We do not live in a world were everybody has ubiquitous fast connections.

There's one thing I have started to hate about Apple - Bad UI design.

I mean - we have great UI experts at Apple and some of the UI elements on OS X and iOS are just so bad-looking.

Just look at the volume bar or status bar on iOS, notification centre on iPad and OS X, now this switch button with the exact same UI from iOS, the whole final cut pro in helvetica.

There's something wrong going on in 1 Infinite Loop. Apple needs to come up with much more innovating and better looking UI designs even those these ones solve a purpose and do it just fine. It's all we Apple geeks have craved for years - great UI design and its implementation.

EDIT: Apple needs to fix the font in the notification centre on OS X- Helvetica is not suitable for low PPI displays running OS X and it looks crippled.

Helvetica is the best font for everything and no they should not change it.

Apple does fantastically with UI design 99% of the time.

I agree with you on ONE point....that notification center on the iPad, is atrocious looking.

Can't change my battery back to where it tells me how much time i have left. this maybe stupid but how do i change it back.

So happy to hear a more traditional Exposé is making a comeback.

Now reinstate 'Save As' and do away with this stupid 'Save a Version/Duplicate' crap and I'd upgrade from 10.6.8 in a heartbeat.

I've been using iWork for years and I see Auto Save and Versions as a very compelling reason to use Microsoft Office.

Maybe you should stop complaining for five minutes, learn how it works, and use what was given to you.

It stuns me the way people wave away newer and better ways of doing things, for no reason other than its "different" than what they're "used to" aka OLD.

Absolutely not. Apple should not give such major upgrades away for free, nor would that jive with their accounting process.

The $30 is reasonable, so reasonable in fact that you can confidently state that the reason people DON'T upgrade has nothing to do with the $, and everything to do with basic, primal, irrational fear of "change".

There may some fear of "loss" too. If anyone had a windows pc at some point, they more than likely encountered an "update" that resulted in non-functional pc or data loss. Such has always been common for PCs.

Bugs left in Mountain Lion Preview 3 with update

Hope Apple gets more people in quality control on the OSX side. A lot of bugs are still left over from Lion, and some new ones exists. Anyone with these same bugs? I don't know if it is my system, but these bugs have been bugging me for a LONG time.

System Preferences -> Software Update no longer shows what updates you have installed. So you can't check what versions of software you have installed and what updates were applied (especially any patches). No convenient way to check.

Unable to set Photo Stream options for upload only or download only. The OSX should have option to "Download only" and iOS devices should have option to "upload only" for Photo Stream. For example, if you have 1000 photos from iPhone, they are all streamed to your MAC. The next 1000 photos can also stream, accumulating on the MAC. You don't want the MAC pics to stream to all your iOS devices, because 500GB can't fit into 32GB!

Wi-Fi sharing of Ethernet doesn't work for WPA2

Mountain Lion lacks preferences for harddrive (check/change partitions, check size, defragment, etc)

unable to change password for me.com accounts when it is not your Apple ID. Odd setup. Lets say you have a gmail account as your Apple ID. then you get a me.com free email from buying an iOS device. If you change your AppleID associated with your gmail on apple, it also changes your me.com email password! That is so odd. If you use me.com account as Apple ID, and then add a gmail for email, changing the Apple ID through apple, does not change your gmail email password (obviously). I can accept Apple ID and email using same me.com account, changing one changes the other, but currently it is so confusing.

In Finder if you sort using date modified (typical for editing recent files), it shows correctly in list view (most recent modification near the top). But if you are actually in an app (like text editor), and select Open... the dialog (using date modified sort), the listings are in reverse order! Least recent to most recent within a category (the earlier section shows oldest modifications first, so you may scroll though thousands of files to reach the most recent near the bottom). Believe it or not, people who do a lot of editing of text files (like a website full of html files, this is a big bummer).

keyboard shortcut for international languages doesn't work. For example, lets say you turn on an international language like Chinese Simplified (PinYin). The shortcut for it is Control + Shift + P. It doesn't work. Also there is no shortcut to quickly get back to English. Fast typers need this working, not pausing to use the cursor. Low productivity.

iMovie is totally broken in Mountain Lion. Try exporting a movie that you've added an intro that is themed. After the intro. the movie gets stuck at the first frame for the rest of the movie.

And of course the biggest bug. Turning on Accessibility for double tap and drag, you can't immediately release and tap to move the cursor. The window is still stuck to your cursor!

Restarting OSX, also breaks your Ethernet sharing over Wi-Fi. This bug has been there SINCE SNOW LEOPARD!!!! Every time you reboot (like installing a software, you have to manually go into the settings, turn off wi-fi sharing, turn it on again. if not work, go into wi-fi setup, do nothing, exit setup, turn off wi-fi sharing, and turn it on again. over and over again, so that you can get your iphone to connect using wifi)

Anyone want to hear more? Hope this is not boring you, or making you feel uneasy because of the number of bugs.

Somewhere I read a comment from somebody saying that ML will have a feature built-in (AirPlay?) that will give you the option to send your Mac's audio to AirPlay devices and IOS devices. So, for example, you could use headphones plugged into an iPhone to hear the audio from your Mac or use a compatible set of external speakers to hear any audio from your Mac, among other things.

Sounds alot liie Airfoil I know but as good as Airfoil is some types of audio, like audio from games, don't sync with the game on the Mac. So does anybody know anything about this? I'm thinking of buying Airfoil for what it does do but will hold off if ML offers capabilities that will replace it. Thanks.

Important bug needs fixing.

In case people skimmed the previous post...

Wi-Fi sharing of Ethernet doesn't work for WPA2!!!

They took out WEP support, so now the PSP (100+million users) can't connect to a MAC OSX sharing the Ethernet over Wi-Fi. Only option? NO SECURITY.

THIS IS A MAJOR SECURITY RISK! The OSX's WPA2 doesn't work. WEP is taken out, so if you share your Ethernet, EVERYONE can connect, because that is the only way you can share via Wi-Fi (no security).

Have you filed bug reports for each one?

Cool down there, boss. I've been using OS X Lion off and on since it's release (when I say off and on I mean for a month or so at a time). Duplicating your file adds more steps than doing a simple Save As. The Mac users I talk to who dislike OS X Lion, dislike it for various reasons, but the lack of Save As is always one that nears the top of their list.

It's not so much the Auto Save that bothers me, it's the lack of Save As. But if having Auto Save means not having Save As, I'd rather simply not have Auto Save.

Auto Save has nothing to do with Save As. Versions is why Save As is now "Duplicate."

Any word on the GateKeeper feature? Active? Yes/No?

Should be the same as previous betas. Middle setting on fresh installs, whatever it was set to previously on upgrade installs.

Anyone know how it runs on older Macs? More specifically, a 2.26 core 2 duo with 4gb RAM?

Thanks

Does that machine have 64 bit EFI? Needs it or it won't run at all.

Now reinstate 'Save As' and do away with this stupid 'Save a Version/Duplicate' crap and I'd upgrade from 10.6.8 in a heartbeat.

You're definitely not the only one who feels that way, they brought back Save As in DP3 (hidden under extra modifier keys, but at least there) and have been making other changes to the save options (at least some of which have been reverting to earlier functionality).

The "Reading List" in Safari has a small design change. A light grey background and a small preview (text) of the bookmarked web page.

I bet that in 20 years, only software developers will use the traditional computers we know of today - the ones with a keyboard, mouse, monitor and computer. Everyone else will use tablet-type devices for their computing needs.

Have u ever worked in "corporate america"?

There are companies still using Windows XP and Quark 4.0 and they are reluctant to upgrade. And I am not talking about 2 or 3 big companies, I am talking about hundreds running legacy custom software.
