Personally I don't think the camera is going to make an appearance before it hits the iPhone. The iPhone is their communications device, the iPad their media consuming device. I'm the same as most people here, I would love one to be included from the get-go, but lets be honest they don't need to add one at this point. All they are looking to do is, as with other products they release, introduce people slowly, get them hooked. Once they've done that they can make small additions and cosmetic changes to said product safe in the knowledge people will buy.

All I know is come launch day, I'll be there waiting to get my hands on an iPad, and something tells me that within 5 minutes of owning one I'll have forgotten all this camera nonsense.

Agreed. People are focusing on the hardware and it’s the software that will make this device.

I think that the camera is not important at all. I had laptops before and I rarely used it. However, I don't mind having one, but I would like it to be more than just a web cam.

This has nothing to do with adding a camera to the iPad. The camera should have been there in the first place. Smart people have to wait until the 3rd generation of this device before it gives enough value.

It is. Cause let say the iPad today have the camera in it. What will people complain next?

I want the back also have camera? Or why can't apple just add in flash light into the device since a small nokia phone also can house a flash..

Then when all these are put in. What people will complain next?
Why dont have 4G, why dont have OLED, why dont have matt screen, why dont have USB, why dont have firewire, why dont have esata, why dont have sd card, why dont have CF card, why dont have led indicting event e.g. got mail there will be led blinking and on and on...

You see the problem is there is never an end to demand and no end to request.

So instead of just complain this dont have and that dont have why not sit down and think about what this device can do and how it can change the way of your life?

e.g. you no longer have to sit down in front of the computer to type this very message. You can now walk around with iPad and you dont have to bring a bulky laptop around.

You dont need to flip open the screen then you can use the device. You can just stand at one place and watch, type and read whatever you want to do. which you cannot do that to a laptop, typing while standing...:D

your bag are alot lighter and have more space to pack more things in..

etcs..

I agree and disagree with your comment, we SHOULD be focusing on the software on the iPad because its software where all the previous Tablets PC's that ran Windows failed (by not providing an interface that was intuitative to use with your fingers on the screen) however there is no point in a company refining the software of a device if it has already been crippled by a lack of hardware.

The iPad is supposed to be aimed at making the internet easy to use and fun, but cutting out the ability to communicate with iChat by not including a camera, the ability to share media by not including SD card/USB port cuts out a lot of what makes the internet fun, and makes the iPad so much less useful than it could so easily have been.

Software is very important, but you have to make sure that the hardware is right first!

The current iPad will be short lived!

According to a friend who is very close to the source, this iPad will be short-lived. I've given up sending my news to MacRumors, they don't listen because I'm not in the media.

The current iPad was supposed to have cameras but they couldn't do it due to some software conflict of some sort. The next one, which they are aiming for a release around the end of this year, will have front and back facing cameras for video conferencing. Whether or not AT&T's 3G network can handle it is another issue.

And in case you want to know other things, there will be new MacBook Pro's within the next couple months. Apple is also working on completely new MacBook Air's, aimed at the end of the year. There will also be a 15-inch MacBook Air released later, next year sometime.

The camera was not shown at the iPad launch as the App and OS were not completed to operate it. There where many apps missing from the iPad launch - Weather, Stocks, etc. I guess Phone OS 4.0 will have many surprises for the iPad.

Take that one step further

Look, what I found:

http://www.macworld.com/article/146198/2010/02/itablet_ipad.html

It's even called an iTablet! 3 (!) USB ports, HDMI, webcam, full OS, Flash, multitasking, 250 Gb (!) HDD... But nobody wants it. :(

Now, Imagine the hit if the iPad came with this hardware (even with only 1 USB, HDMI, webcam) and it's already good software. Wouldn't it be better than the one that will come with correct software but limited hardware? People will rush out and get in line like the first iphone.

This excuse that a camera isn't included because "you needs things to look forward to" is so lame. If a simple camera is what you are holding back for future updates, then there is a bigger problem here.

So some people will wait a year. However, if an iPad fits your lifestyle, buy it now. Sell it in a year, and the price difference should be worth the value that you got out of it during the year. That's who's going to buy it.

*Exactly*. I sold my 1st gen iphone for the same price i paid for it. I expect to get plenty of value out of my 1st gen iPad as well as being able to sell it for at least 70% of what i paid.

Er,

How does this have anything to do with the iPad? Perhaps they want to improve the quality of their ACTUAL point and shoot camera products called "iPhone" and "iPod Nano"......

ya think?

I dont think so, you gotta take into consideration how many YEARS tablets have been around, and how crappy they have sold....I appreciate Apple for going in a completely different direction with the iPad. Much like the iPhone, i think it'll take off with the second gen, especially once more iPad specific apps are released. Considering ive done the netbook rounds, for 499 a larger iPod Touch for me is a no brainer.

The fact that the product shot shows Windows XP running should give you some clues as to its software and/or readiness to ship ;) Some of those things you're listing are disadvantages IMO... Conventional hard disk spinning around... "Full OS" not designed for touch and ready for apps also not designed for touch...

Revision B

I'm torn between this advice and just waiting 6 months or less and buying one for a discounted price, and or the same price, but with a camera. Am I the only one in the world that's excited about augmented-reality video games?

I hate how Apple limits their devices so that they won't cannibalize their other products. I understand it, but I hate it just the same. It seems to go against Apple's progressive stance on technology. I also understand the revenue stream concept, where by offering me everything I want from the start will not make me want to buy the same device a year later. Apple is a hardware company after all.

I just figured the iPad and devices like it run on different models than the current Mac lines. Again, I understand limiting the MacBook, so that people are more likely to upgrade to the MacBook Pro if they want the extra features. Japanese car companies do this and it works out great for them.

Hey Mates

I am wondering if the lawsuit Kodak has filed against Apple caused them to pull the camera?

As the ipad is not a phone and could be taken as a photograph device if it shipped.

Regs,
Jacko

No. Kodak patent applies whether a phone or not.

This is it, at the end of the day they have other products with more advanced features that people will pay for if they really want them. It doesn't make sense to add features available on other products if they are not essential. I know exactly what would happen if the iPad had a camera, it would be the same as when I had a video phone, I used it to impress others until the novelty wore off.

for me, Charlie Brooker gets it spot on:

"Just because something is technically possible, it doesn't mean it has to be done. It's technically possible to build an egg whisk that makes phonecalls, an MP3 player that dispenses capers or a car with a bread windscreen. Humankind will continue to prosper in their absence. Not everything needs a 15-megapixel lens stuck on the back, like a little glass anus. Give these ingrates a camera and they'd whine that it didn't have a second camera built into it. What are you taking photographs of anyway? Your camera collection?

And don't bring up videocalls to defend yourself: it'd be creepy talking to a disembodied two-dimensional head being held at arm's length, and besides, the iPad is too heavy to hold in front of your face for long, so you'd end up balancing it in your lap, which means both callers would find themselves staring up one another's others nostrils, like a pair of curious dental patients. (Videocalls are overrated anyway. You just sit there staring at each other with nothing to say. It's like a prison visit: eventually one of you has to start masturbating just to break the tension.)"

Rumored price drop and adding the camera and I'lll be getting one.

I don't have any other problem with the ipad. I don't use flash on my ipod touch nor do I have a problem with no multitasking.

That's like saying, "I don't fly with my car now, so I have no need for a flying car."

Of course you don't use flash on your ipod touch!

May be someone already noticed that tags NEW disappeared from imac, macbook, and mac mini.

What are your doing mr apple? i love apple products but i refuse to buy a device which i have no control over. I can understand slightly with the iphone but what is going to make me buy the ipad??

Apple would say they make a product for you already and it starts with "MacBook".

Even things like wireless mixer displays in the studio, or wireless plugins, ideas are endless.

Considering these types of apps exist for the iPhone, what makes you think they won't exist for the iPad? Apple doesn't have to make them for them to exist. It's a huge opportunity for developers.

Maybe even open the ipad up for gaming, what i mean is not just touch screen games, but hooking up a control pad. I dont like touch games, i dont think you can ever beat a control pad.

Even the iPhone and Ipod touch are "opened up for gaming". Starting with OS 3.0 you could connect peripheral devices via the dock connector or bluetooth. Maybe no one wants a controller the size of an iPhone to use with their iPhone, but the iPad is a different story. If there's some demand we might see these types of devices- again just maybe not from Apple...

These rumors have all been on Macrumors at sometime in the past. And anyone could have told you the first gen ipad will be short lived, all Apple products are updated yearly.

You mean putting camera on iPad is more complicated than putting it on iPhone or iPod Nano? BS!

I think it's the pricing. They're starting with $499, and that's way lower than anyone thought. They've also signaled they may go lower. When they know how many people buy these things, then they bring out a webcam model.

Maybe 90% will buy the cheapest, and won't find the lack of a camera any big deal. Maybe more buy the more expensive models, and they wouldn't mind paying more for the camera, or more flash memory, etc.

I want an iPad but will wait until there is a camera. Not for taking picture but on the screen side for video chats. I would take this on the road rather than a laptop and I need to video chat. I am really surprised that one is not included on this coming release.
