Apple without Steve Jobs will decline - stock $30

It's all about Steve. Face it. I got my first Mac last year and now the end is in site. Oh well.:(

Well I havn't had the time to read the 8+pages in this thread yet but this saddens me.

I'm not really excited about MW in January anymore now. :(

I think MacWorld is officially over. Last person out, please turn off the lights...

I suspect Apple has been looking for the exit for some time, but I don't think they'd have handled it this way if something else wasn't involved. At the very least Steve would have done the keynote (or shared it with Phil) and announced after the show that this would be their last appearance. Or had Steve make the announcement from the stage and explain Apple's reasons. Dropping the bomb with a terse press releases just three weeks before the doors open feels like a deliberate swipe at IDG.

Yeah, if this is all part of some grand strategic plan (which is perfectly reasonable), why leave it to now to announce? Why not tell everyone 2 months ago, or at last years macworld? Back to my original thought; why isn't Steve doing the last one? Health? He just can't be bothered anymore? He's too grumpy? ;) Whatever the reason they clearly only made the decision at the last moment and I think they announced it'll be the last macworld to help play down the fact Steve isn't doing it, if Steve had have done it I think they would have had him announce it on stage... Somethings going on...

Actually is this a good thing?

Maybe Apple will release hardware faster now, instead of waiting for the keynotes to announce new stuff. Maybe Apple is getting with the game?

9to5mac points out something interesting - the last time Schiller filled in for Steve was when he was having his cancer operation...

it was also probably the last time anyone filled in for steve. This isn't a health issue steve is just trying to shift things around to try and assure people that apple isn't a company of one, no matter how much that is true at this moment...

And as a stock holder, I'm going to stay in. I'm down a little bit already what's some more? Although I'm positive this announcement was planned so it happened after market closed. Whether that actually softens the blow any we'll find out.

Since Apple stock hasn't had the typical November-December bubble this year (with the eventual January popping that always occurs), I'm anxiously awaiting the next month's price fluctuations. Investors like Apple's on-hand cash, high margins and the nose-diving price of components like memory, but might worry about a consumer-focused brand with little product diversity in a recession. Throw into the mix the doubts about the ubiquitous leader's health and recent lack of ubiquity and it keeps getting curiouser and curiouser. Could the post-Macworld-Expo bubble burst happen tomorrow instead of January 6th? Hmm.

this is terrible. I am not a fan of this news...how can you have Macworld without the makers of the Mac? it seems kind of useless to hold a special event everytime they want to announce a new or revised product. Macworld is the place for all of the big stuff...and it's especially worse now that Steve isn't doing the keynote. Phil is cool and everything, but...

Wow, chill out people. Some of your act like the sky is falling, or Apple's about to go out of business.

Chill. Apple's doing fantastic right now. Maybe it's some kind of transition, who knows, but whatever happens, they're still gonna continue making new products. You really think Jobs came up with everything himself? Even if he is leaving (which we have no reason to believe yet), big deal. Maybe it's just cuz I'm a fan, not a fanboy, but the best part about be a Mac user for me is...[gasp]...USING MACS. I think they're great products, and the only reason I pay attention to these keynotes is to see what new or updated products they've got that I may use.

EDIT: I've gotta amend that. You're acting like things are much worse than that. You're acting like your friend just died or something. Like this is bringing tears to your eyes. I find it slightly disappointing, but what is the big deal???

Mac world etc

im am my self very disappointed that apple wont be doing no more macworld. I think its great to watch the keynote. Also why is phil presenting the last keynote????? i think personally that steve presents much better.

i hope steve carries on and does WWDC. There could be a reason for steve not doing it. Some people think its his health but could apple be hiding something up there sleve and use iChat AV to talk to steve.

This is a sad day as i like watching the keynotes by steve

Ive would be a better replacement really, he's more charismatic compared to Phil.
Saying that though Phil wasn't that bad at the Paris expo and that was 4 years ago, he has gotten alot better at keynotes.

whatever people think, 2 points.

1/ Apple is sitting on $25bn...this aint about money.

2/ Apple knows what any SJ related rumour does to the share price. They have done nothing to quell the growing tide of rumours with this announcement. Why would you deliberately make your own share price tank without good reason.?

That is what I'm worried about. There has to be more coming than just a press release

You said $30/share in the title. You're joking, right?

Funny thing is after the notebook special event most of my previous fanboyism for Stevenotes went, granted alot of that is due to me thinking they messed up on the notebooks, no FW, glossy only.

But I found the whole event to be forced and lifeless, nothing compared to many of Steve Jobs wonderfull keynotes throughout the years, up until that event I was always taken in by the RDF, but now I just want Apple to maintain a good line-up of products, hardware and software, for all users without sacrificing function over their form, which IMHO the new notebooks in many ways have done.

Bad move as a religion, good move as a company

I think you can link this news in with the story from a bit further down about low desktop sales in November. Apple have been basing their release schedules around the MacWorld expos and WWDC for so long now that people expect it.

Since you can sort of predict when a line might be refreshed, if it's near to an event and the line you're interested in hasn't been updated in a while, you'll hold off until afterwards. This is more interesting for us as apple customers/watchers, but it's very bad for Apple as a company.

They want the release of the new version of the iMac / Mac Pro / Whatever to be a total surprise so people are still buying the old one right up until the new one comes out. By abandoning the trade shows which, as others have pointed out, are an expensive anachronism, Apple can be more profitable by surprising people with a couple of "Special Press Events" a year on their campus. I'd be surprised if they stopped doing keynotes at WWDC, but that's still a sensible place to unveil stuff like server software and hardware and development tools.

Disclaimer: I'm waiting until January to buy an iMac!

Fitting song for the beginning of the end

King and Queen - The Moody Blues

It's been a good run. I'll enjoy my Mac as long as I can. The decline will be slow and painful, like growing old.

God I'm depressed.:(

They'd announce it if true. They surely know this news will make the stock tank.

Why Schiller? I think Ive is somewhat captivating to listen to. I feel physically sick.

No fixed events could stabilize the stock price

As many of you know, Apple's stock price has been on a wild roller-coaster ride for the past two years. Perhaps this move is also aimed at stabilizing the stock price by avoiding the speculation that always surrounds Macworld and WWDC. Apple is probably always feeling the pressure from shareholders to announce something remarkable at these events, as if they don't, the stock tanks. As a shareholder, I would feel more comfortable without these events.

Am I the only one who thinks that Ive just isn't a good public speaker, he seems somewhat awkward and twitchy, there's no doubting his genius and talent when it comes to design, but I'm not sure he'd be the greatest salesman.

Personally, I think that this announcement will do more damage to Apple's stock then anything announced at Macworld could ever do. Especially since SJ isn't presenting this year. This is very bad, for investors, consumers, and for fanboys.

I have a feeling that SJ's health is having some major issues. Something is wrong.

man, thats really sad to hear, i wonder what the fate of WWDC will be. If it wasn't a big enough blow that they're not keynoting anymore they go ahead and let phil schiller do it, he's the most lacklustre and boring person in the world, imo they should have just cancelled they're 2009 keynote all together, even if what they release is amazing, it's delivery by phil schiller will kill it instantly. i certainly won't be watching it like i normally do after it's over.
Such a shame, apple has changed so much in the last 5 or 6 years, i can't decide if it's for the better or not.
