Am I the only one who thinks that Ive just isn't a good public speaker, he seems somewhat awkward and twitchy, there's no doubting his genius and talent when it comes to design, but I'm not sure he'd be the greatest salesman.

I agree, he isn't a natural public speaker and doesn't look comfortable when in the limelight.

He was recently interviewed by Stephen Fry, who he knows quite well, and he still looked uneasy in front of the camera.

He's admitted that he doesn't like public speaking. But for Christ's sake, they could have done better then Phil Schiller, that man is worse then my history teacher.

wow

wow, end of an era!

I remember my first macworld, nearly 18 years ago!! And the one that really changed things for me, 1998, when MSFT bought into apple. I STILL own shares from that macworld show, pre-macworld actually at a split adjusted 3.50$. I just have to keep holding some of them since I have traded in and out yearly for decades now.

I'll definitely be at this years again, gotta find my free pass.

My thoughts:

1) Wow..what a shocker...the super bowl of tech geeks...probably wont exist beyond 2009
2) Steve jobs doesnt care one ounce about what Wall Street or we think or perceive from this annoucement
3) Apple clearly has preferred the whole lets have an event to introduce a new product on our own and not a trade show (ipod in Sept, Macs in Oct). I see this continuing from now on.
4) There really isnt anything to announce in january...so why have steve go up there and just talk about nothing for 1 hour.
5) The economy sucks, the stock price sucks, people are down, people are losing jobs, and apple was wanting to get out of this whole notion of every year we do macworld and we need to do this and that...so they figured this will be the year to quit....it will be all-in-all quiet..people will be upset yes..but they will deal...we will introduce new products when we think it is time.

the rumors will go rampant...but we shall see...

also go to cnbc.com.... Jim Goldman with Tech Check blog.... this guy knows stuff...and he is reporting he has contacts in apple that says steve is fine and healthy..they just wanted to end the era of macworld...and they basically want to be in total control of their events..and not be a "speaker"

also..google pulled out of macworld a few weeks ago...google ceo is on apples board...they knew apple was going to be shutting the doors on this conference....

Steve Jobs doesn't care about black people!!!

The real reason Jobs & Apple are backing out of MWSF

is, obviously, because Steve has finally seen the light and decided to liquidate the company and give the money back to the shareholders.

Do you think after Steve reads this thread he will change his mind and do the last keynote? Just having Steve recap Apple's history from the beginning like Larry did with Oracle would be a nice ending. No new products necessary.

Apple's stock down 25% tomorrow. The strides Apple has gained in the past 5-6 years are over. Apple will be back to late 90s days when everything was Microsoft--Windows.

It's over folks! We had some fun though with iPod and iPhone rumors, Powerbook G5, Intel transition, etc.

Arn you are a smart guy. Sell Macrumors now while it is still worth something or you'll be back feeling people's prostates.

1. Leave Jobs alone. It is his choice
2. Maybe Apple will be normalized from this cult-ish feeling the last 10 years.
It will be good with a calmer pace.
3. Anyone in this one forum which want to take over ?

Personally, i find this to be rediculous. Everyone looks forward to the event and they cant be loosing money by hosting it.

What now, will new products just appear on the website. Or will they hold small press meetings?

Noooooooooooooooooo.........

Mac is a religion and the Macworld Keynote is Easter Sunday mass.

I've been trying to get to Macworld to see a keynote live for five years - and I finally had it planned and the money put aside, for Jan 2010...

More seriously though, is Steve ill? Why would he not do the last keynote?

Wow, chill out people. Some of your act like the sky is falling, or Apple's about to go out of business.

Chill. Apple's doing fantastic right now. Maybe it's some kind of transition, who knows, but whatever happens, they're still gonna continue making new products. You really think Jobs came up with everything himself? Even if he is leaving (which we have no reason to believe yet), big deal. Maybe it's just cuz I'm a fan, not a fanboy, but the best part about be a Mac user for me is...[gasp]...USING MACS. I think they're great products, and the only reason I pay attention to these keynotes is to see what new or updated products they've got that I may use.

EDIT: I've gotta amend that. You're acting like things are much worse than that. You're acting like your friend just died or something. Like this is bringing tears to your eyes. I find it slightly disappointing, but what is the big deal???

I've been a Mac user for less than a yr, but I'd like to add that the best part about being a Mac user for me is.......you guys, the community. I can find help anywhere at anytime.

So if all else fails (no Jobs etc), the people who bought a Mac for its vision remain. We = Mac = Apple. Simple as that.

IDG- the company that owns MacWorld? Why would Apple want to take a swipe at them?

We don't know, but these companies seemed like they were not comfortable with each other back when the East Coast expos were cancelled. Maybe Apple was demanding concessions from IDG. Who knows?

Yeah, if this is all part of some grand strategic plan (which is perfectly reasonable), why leave it to now to announce? Why not tell everyone 2 months ago, or at last years macworld? Back to my original thought; why isn't Steve doing the last one? Health? He just can't be bothered anymore? He's too grumpy? ;) Whatever the reason they clearly only made the decision at the last moment and I think they announced it'll be the last macworld to help play down the fact Steve isn't doing it, if Steve had have done it I think they would have had him announce it on stage... Somethings going on...

Even if they decided just today, dropping the news this way seemed peevish.

My guesses:

1. WWDC and more town halls will continue.
2. IDG pissed off Apple for whatever reason, so they are not sending Steve to take away press from the event.
3. This will be the end of MacWorld.

I think Steve is too much of an egomaniac to start some transition process a la Bill Gates. He'll just say one day he is quitting and the next day someone else will be running the show.

That's the funniest thing I've read all evening!

Fortune:
"We're on track for a terrific show for this year," said Paul Kent, a VP at IDG World Expo and general manger for Macworld 2009. He said IDG is committed to staging Macworld in San Francisco’s Moscone Center in January 2010, but he declined to go further than that.
Apple(R) today announced that this year is the last year the company will exhibit at Macworld Expo. Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, will deliver the opening keynote for this year’s Macworld Conference & Expo, and it will be Apple's last keynote at the show. The keynote address will be held at Moscone West on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. Macworld will be held at San Francisco’s Moscone Center January 5-9, 2009.
So who could possibly present keynote in 2010?

wow that sucks. I wonder if apple is really cutting back because of the economy or Jobs is going to be on the golf course. Or something worse and he's sick. maybe this will be a good thing because now apple can do there down big product launches.
Hopefully some good will come from this but i don't see it.
