Why? So we could all huddle together and feel all warm and nostalgic and have a moment of closure? What has Steve Jobs ever done to give you the idea he would step away from something like MacWorld with any nostalgia or ceremony? Was it when he slashed through Apple's product line-up when he returned to Apple? Was it the clearing out of the old Mac archival stuff from the Apple campus? Was it the jettisoning of all the beloved Mac-isms from the OS 9 era? Was it his complete lack of acknowledgement of any of Apple's supposedly significant anniversaries? The man clearly isn't as nostalgic about these things as some of his customers are..

So much anger, young padawan. This is why I think there will be a send off.

What are the seven stages of grief?
Shock
Denial
Anger <------------- You
Bargaining
Depression
Testing
Acceptance

The only problem with your little theory? Apple Stores make more money per square foot than any other retail store in the nation... by far.

Even in a recession (suck it up, people!) this will only drop in sync, not more than, the rest of retail sales. The U.S. at least won't allow a 1930s to happen again.

By racking up trillions in debt, we have allowed a 1930 style depression again. Alas, you're in it. The full force will probably be felt in 2011 after a shallow recovery in 2010 after the government shoots its wad on stimulus.

It's the civil unrest that I didn't quite see coming....

So what does this mean for product announcements?

It seems like the only reason some updates haven't happened already is saving something for the show.

Having the show come and go with no product announcements would be unimaginable, the backlash would be huge.

While I can see why apple would want to work on their own schedule, losing the certainty that apple would update at least some of their products at two times of year, at least, gives a big feeling of uncertainty.

Apple product announcements will come in smaller events.

You're right, Apple has inexorably been drifting away from computers and towards gadgets for some time. Personally I've always been more interested in the computers - 7 or 8 years ago I could go to the Apple website and find a ton of things I was tempted to buy, now I rarely visit their website as it's just crummy phones and mp3 players :( Only the Mac Pro does anything for me, and that's not without its faults.

Maybe it takes a while for the concept of the current and future iPhones being a PC to sink in? ;)

They're brining computing TO the gadgets. And vice versa. Your "gadgets" do more. Convergence. The number of different things you can do, alongside the number of applications is increasing. It can compute more, do more.

It's a bummer I won't be looking forward to MacWorld as much this year, but it doesn't mean there won't be exciting Apple media events and product announcements in the future. Life goes on.

Dittos. There will still be Apple rumors, news, and events. My life won't change at all due to Apple's Macworld absence.

Wired posted another article on the topic. I happen to like this quote and thought it should be shared.

To this we say: C'mon. Are you serious? Do you really think Apple would cancel its attendance at all future Macworlds because Jobs isn't up to one speech?

time to buy elsewhere

Hmmmm. I might back away from future apple purchases if Steve is no longer backing the company, i can beige box a linux setup cheaper and do more anyway.

Will Apple go down like it did after he left the first time?...

He's still backing the company. He just won't be giving a keynote. You really should buy what you like, instead of having to be sold on a product during a CEO address.

actually no.

link

Actually yes because I never directly implied all Jewelery stores to be retailers.

I'd ask you to cite a source on that, but since you can't even spell jewelry, I doubt you have one.

I shouldn't even be answering this to someone who doesn't understand that their are plural spellings to many words in different countries. You, tveric, need to learn your English first before you go on spreading false facts. Ok? Attaboy.

Is this what caused apple's stock to drop so much these past few days?:D

Well this happened yesterday, the iPhone no longer being exclusive to Orange in France and maybe something else. It's just been bad news after bad news. (Bad news is up for interpretation, but the market is seeing it as such.)

I'd rather see seriously upgraded desktops than Jobs waffling on about how amazing the latest iGimmick is.

I really can't be fussed about this. I've never regarded Apple as anything more than a tech company, so the cult of personality stuff puts me to sleep.
Nor am I convinced that Steve is that essential. If the only thing that will let Apple produce decent tech is Steve then the company is utter crap, it's his fault, and Apple deserves to fail once he goes.

Bottom line: it's about the product, not the personality.
