Regarding facebook, I hate the company and think Mark Z is a horrible person but I have heard in interviews that he is very, very loyal to his employees and will defend them to a fault. I am sure working there is enjoyable, just sucks that at the end of the day those people are working for a system that despite its best intentions has proven to bring out the absolute worst in society.

Haha Bain and Company at No. 1.

I imagine 99.99% of that is thanks to the compensation. The other 00.01% is probably the sociopathic satisfaction of manipulating companies and printing money by offering pointless consulting and backhanded equity "deals."

And what is the tech Facebook is supposed to work on? They’re not building computers or hardware of any kind. They don’t build an operating system or even their own browser. Their Facebook branded phone flopped. All they have is an app and a website like every other company on this planet. By that standard McDonalds is a tech company.

Isn't Oculus hardware?

Glass Door is a good gauge of what the employer is like, but more people are likely to complain rather than praise the company - like all review sites. When starting new companies, unless I've heard otherwise, my main concern is how the company views work / life balance. Last place I want to work is somewhere that expects its employees to work 12 hours per day... ugh.

The fact that Facebook and Google are near the top show what a bogus list this is.
How they treat their employees and how their employees feel about their company is not indicative of their public reputations. This list is about how they treat their employees and how their employees feel about the company. So what makes the list bogus? Your dislike of FB and Google?

Well, having been on three interviews with Apple, all to no avail it would be nice to know what the hell it takes to actually work in one of the stores.
And for those wondering, I've had several former employees recommend me. I actually "sold" an Apple Watch in a store- another customer asked me how I liked and used mine and I talked it up so well, they decided to buy one! The Apple Specialist who saw that happen, thanked me.
Anyway, if any Apple recruiter here thinks there's a place for a retired teacher with a lot of computer and technical experience, let me know.

They have a focus on social skills and sales skills, computer or technical skills is a nice to have but not required.
Personal preferences of the manager will also play a role especially in more independent shops.

What do you think powers their app and website?

Not only did Facebook create the code that gathers all that data on us and serves it to advertisers, but they also built their own custom servers, racks, and networking equipment that went into their custom built data center.

You're also forgetting who created the Oculus and Portal

I actually see his point now. They are a website developer who has a popular site. I have websites, they just don’t have a billion users. That does not make me a tech company.

Did you write the code that powers your website? Did you create the hardware that the site runs on? Did you create your own data center?

No? Then you're not a tech company.
Yes? Then you are a tech company.

Mostly leadership, culture, and work/life balance.
Is that really widespread all across? I've certainly worked in my share of big companies where some orgs/teams have had a completely different feel and take on things compared to other orgs/teams, depending on what they were working on, who was running them, etc.

What does some perception of some ideology have to do with it? Usually these types of things are fairly different and separate from the actual work, work environment, employees, and everything else related to that.
Well, that's kind of my point. I wouldn't want to work for Facebook out of principle because I think they're actively making society worse. We'd literally be better off without them, imo. But if that isn't something on your mind, I'm sure you'd enjoy the actual work environment which might be wonderful for all I know.

Ah, out of principle.

Ah, out of principle.
I'm not saying they'd offer me a job. But I'd like to think I would decline if they did. I'd certainly be ignoring my own principles (hence the moral aspect) if I accepted a job with them – which is admittedly something people tend to do all the time.

Perhaps, but...my wife is a long-time employee of Bain (finance/HR) and from her experiences, have to agree it's a great place to work. Their benefits are generous and health plan is about the best you can get (why I'm on hers and not my company's).

And if you're a Partner, well, you're pretty much all set. :)

I have a hard time believing Facebook is a good place to work....
why?

You know nothing. Facebook is a software company. It has its own language and has even released its own frameworks that power thousands of websites and mobile apps. Facebook has done a lot to improve the web both at the server and broswer levels.

By your standards, companies like adobe (photoshop) and other SAAS are not tech companies. In fact, only a dozen companies worldwide would fit your standards. what a joke.
