I still remember that! They should've just released the 4G iPad from the start. Instead just release a 3G iPad then 7 months later adding 4G with everything the same.
The 3rd was a big step forward from the 2nd because the screen was massively improved. The important difference between the 3rd and 4th was actually the CPU gains- there had been no CPU gain from 2nd to 3rd gen. Forget 4G, the overwhelming majority of iPad buyers don't buy a cellular model- why would they? You're right in that the 3rd gen ipad should never have existed, though, because the weak CPU and aggressive iOS updates made it the shortest lived Apple device many of us have had.

Let’s talk about the air for example vrs the pro.
11” iPad Pro 256gb is $899
iPad Air 256gb is $749

So there’s a big issue there why not sorent another $150 get a whole lot more power better camera Face ID etc.. maybe my math is wrong or you want all the pretty colors but buying an air wouldn’t be the best economical decision as Apple holds on to the Touch ID.
Don’t worry, Apple has realized that as well and will be jacking up the Pro prices next year with the OLED models.

They also technically doubled the graphics performance but it was still so under-powered to drive 4x the pixels to the point it couldn't even handle iOS7's blurring effect whereas the A5 in the mini and Ipad 2 (with a jailbreak, since it was disabled) could handle it flawlessly.

Edit: referring to the GPU doubling that happened between the A5 in the 2 and the A5X in the 3

The fact that Apple still assumes only 1 person will ever use the device,
"wants" is probably more like it, of course only one person should use it so everyone needs to buy their own unit...

totally agree on the limited iPad OS, it is so obvious why they do it all (and it has worked so far)

iPadOS is too limited and in my opinion doesn’t need anything beyond m2. Apple needs to revamp iPadOS. They should strongly consider adding a macOS lite/touch mode with better multitasking with the macOS traffic lights and more free form window management. It would be good to be able to run stock macOS apps too especially if the iPad is docked and connected to a keyboard and monitor I don’t see what the reason is to not allow that.

Secondly Apple should change the placement of the front facing camera to be in landscape mode just like on the Mac. Finally, Apple should update the iPad Magic Keyboard and add function keys like volume, screen brightness, etc. it is very annoying to use the iPad and not have those features especially when listening to music or video. Like control center is ok but it requires a couple of extra steps just to control volume.

Until then, iPad doesn’t need any updates in my opinion. M2 in iPad is already overkill. It is excellent.

All new ipad lineup that requires new pen and keyboard that are not compatible with the old models.

To be honest, 99% of what I used my iPad for is to browse news websites when I am in bed. I don't need any flashy new features or more processing power. What I do need is the ability to keep it safe with iPadOS updates, without resorting to landfill and wasting money on a new model.

I can see now why Apple decided to make all of their operating systems free.

GPU doubling between 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th?

I remember the 3rd did improve on the 2nd in terms of GPU, and looked brilliant for the first 2 years before Apple's updates annihilated it.

Between the 2nd and 3rd. The 3rd/4th had a substantial upgrade as well and that device performed really well. iOS8 basically killed performance of A5 devices but the 3rd update killing devices was pretty much the trend.

I had an iPad 2 and purchased the iPad 3 when it was first released and I remember performance being a little spotty with the A5X. It got worse with iOS 6 and was really bad with iOS 7.

Personally, I think Apple needs to clean up the iPad line. There are too many models with almost nothing to distinguish them. The average user literally doesn't know what the best (non-pro) model is, and the pro user can barely decide if the top of the line Pro model is worth the extra cost over the top-of-the-line regular model.

Don't even get me started on the compatibility of accessories between models.

It was one of my worst Apple experiences. Crippling 2 year old hardware and then making it almost impossible to downgrade was damn near criminal. EVERYTHING slowed down. Typing lag. Slow browsing. Even previously snappy games started treading water! I've not purchased another iPad for myself since.

Edit: I briefly repurposed it as an electronic photo frame- but after updating it again (🤦‍♂️) Apple decided to remove the "shuffle photos" option, which has never ever come back to their operating systems!! Wtf?!?
