yeah merging the iPad Air with the MacBook Air and bringing one of those Lenovo Miix type things to the market 10 years late is actually not that bad of an idea.

Honestly, that's a good thing.
I'd rather wait more for a more profound redesign.

I'd rather wait for software that makes use of they offer, instead of even more overpowered hardware.

I don't have any use for a personal iPad, but we have a family model that just uses a generic family appleID. It's a few years old, but still ridiculously fast for what it does. Apple needs to offer logins, same as macOS, instead of m2 or m3 chips that gets used for little more than high-resolution iPhone activities.

Oh no. People are going to start claiming Apple is doomed again like they used too...lol. Big deal. No new iPads. Not like they need updating every year. I wish these tech companies would move away from yearly hardware updates and take more time with software releases.

:apple: needs to release a small iPad like the touch to save their company's bacon.

oh I get day mixed up
is today January' fools day
and April 1 is the start 2024?

I need an iPad to help ne figure this out, but
:apple: did not sell any this year.

Well, they did it again with the Macbook Pro M3, launched just months after the launch of the M2.
It's less important now because the processor gains each year are of far less significance.

This shift in consumer behavior could have prompted Apple to reevaluate its tablet strategy, focusing on more impactful and less frequent hardware updates.
I somehow doubt that… it’s probably a mix of focusing on the Vision Pro and supply chain issues for new parts, such as OLED panels.

The plus side to this is that there were some fantastic iPad deals this holiday season - the 9th generation back down to $250 USD and the 10th generation at $350. The latter price for the 10th generation seems much more appropriate for what you get. These deals tend to be directed by Apple, not by retailers, and I doubt they'd be as aggressive with pricing if a new model were out.

That's unfortunate. A simple processor update was due and missed.
Was it though I’m still using a 2018 iPad Pro and plan to finally upgrade when they release the next model. However my current iPad still is snappy and fast

I’ve said this before and here it is once more: I just hope they keep on model with a 3.5mm jack.

I really want to get a large OLED iPad Pro for several reasons, but I require a built-in headphone jack if they want that kind of money. It’s been a deal-breaker for me for years already, but iOS Logic Pro just makes it sadder (the ‘choice’ of unworkable headphone lag or having to deal with adapters makes the whole thing far less appealing to me - I might as well be on my mac if I lose the freedom of being as mobile, and have to pay a subscription on top for the privilege!!). I want to give them my money, but they don’t seem to want it that much. Oh well.

a dozen new features, including OLED display technology, the M3 chip, and a new, "laptop-like" keyboard accessory.

None of those are new features. Those are all iterations of existing features.

I still can’t forgive Apple for brining the iPad 4 out 7 months after the iPad 3.

They had to because the iPad 3 was badly designed. They should never have released it. And at the time nobody seemed to care, any time I mentioned it all anyone said was basically “boo hoo.”

I mean at some point there will be. But not for the foreseeable future.

I bought the iPad 3 about five weeks before the iPad 4 came out.. wasn't happy!

Edit: I used that iPad absolutely loads for the first two years. For that period it was great. Then I did an iOS update (I can't recall which one), and the thing was junk after that- shockingly slower.

Glad to see at least two other people commiserating with my experience with that damn thing. I noticed that it wasn’t very high performance when I got it, and then yes the next iOS update made it worse, and then the one after that made it so stuttery and slow I quit using it.

The fact that it was junk after just two years, and that they replaced it in 7 months and then sold its replacement for FIVE YEARS, tells me they knew it was junk but they sold it anyway.

It was the first iPad with Retina Display but it had the same SOC as the iPad before it with just a little bit more graphics power and it clearly was not enough.

I’m using the same iPad. I feel iOS 17 has started to slow it down a bit. Animations are starting to stutter a little bit.

When I first saw the ipad in 2010 I thought “Holy crap that’s the future.” When I saw the 12.9” in 2015 I said “Finally the pencil.” When my 7 year old ipad was limping along I saw the 2022 12.9” ipad with new pencil I said “Maybe I’ve milked the 7 year old one enough, I’d like to checkout the Magic Keyboard thing.”

I wouldn't mind if Apple released iPads on a 2 year cycle. The iPad is a mature market and Apple's still updating the A10 iPads for now.

The M3 upgrade doesn’t relegate the M2 in remotely the same way that the iPad 4 did to the iPad 3. The iPad 3 was discontinued while the M2 is and will continue to be sold for at least another 3 months, if the M3 MBA rumors are actually true. Personally, Apple would be better off leaving the MBA at the M2 until at least WWDC 2024, while making the Spring Event all about the iPad.

I was burned by the iPad 4 rollout like others here, but the M3 release just doesn’t remotely rise to that level.

Allow it to switch between IOS and OSX. That’s all I want at this point. Micro LED wouldn’t hurt though.

I didn't know they sold the iPad 4 for 5 years! Wow. The iPad 3 situation was frustrating, and a very poor show. My main use for it was to accompany me for a year on a round the world trip, back when a lot of websites were not adapted for mobile phone use, and at least it served that function well. After travelling I went back to using my 2011 MacBook Air, which worked well for years (well, except for the battery committing suicide prematurely twice).
